Short answer: Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix is a community path-tracing overhaul that can dramatically change outdoor lighting, reflections, shadows, and clouds, but it remains a work in progress with uneven compatibility and no controlled, same-hardware Fallout: New Vegas benchmark. The original renderer is the dependable choice for a familiar look and established mod setup. A separate FNV-DLSS5 configuration keeps the original raster image and adds DLAA/neural rendering; it is not an RTX path-traced lighting remaster.
Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix versus the original game
These are three different ways to run the same game, and treating them as one product creates misleading expectations:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Original New Vegas: the stable baseline, using the game’s established baked and stencil-style lighting with the mature conventional modding ecosystem.
- Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix: a work-in-progress community release that replaces the original renderer with a path tracer and adds custom volumetric clouds. It is intended to make the base game completable, but inherited scene data can produce visual errors, especially indoors.
- FNV-DLSS5: a separate setup that intentionally disables Remix path tracing. It sends the original New Vegas raster image through DLAA and neural-rendering components, so its goal is image cleanup and reconstruction rather than physically based RTX lighting.
The right choice depends on whether you want a physically lit reinterpretation, the familiar art direction with better edge quality, or the least disruptive way to play. RTX Remix is the most visually ambitious option and the one most likely to require troubleshooting. The original game remains the safest starting point for a large existing mod list.
What changes visually in the RTX release?
Path-traced light transport
The RTX release replaces New Vegas’s original renderer with path tracing. Instead of relying on the game’s baked and stencil-style lighting, the new renderer can calculate light bouncing through a scene, reflections, and shadows in a more physically based way. The change is most obvious when sunlight, emissive surfaces, and reflective materials interact across an outdoor scene. Surfaces that previously received a largely fixed light treatment can respond to nearby illumination and occlusion.

The project also includes custom volumetric clouds. Clouds alter the apparent direction and softness of daylight, so the sky can affect the scene below rather than acting only as a background. The visual result is therefore a reinterpretation of New Vegas’s lighting, not merely a sharper version of the original frame.
No replacement texture pack is included
The release intentionally does not ship replacement assets. You retain your existing texture and asset choices instead of being forced onto a new art pack. That is useful for players who have already selected a texture setup, but it also means path-traced lighting is being applied to assets built for the original game. A high-resolution texture does not automatically become a physically authored material, and a light source positioned for the old renderer remains positioned there unless it is corrected.
Why some interiors look wrong
Original light sources are passed through by default. The project author notes that some lights float in the middle of rooms, which can make an interior look “a bit off.” This is a scene-data problem rather than a failure of path tracing itself: the new renderer is faithfully using a source whose position was acceptable, or at least tolerated, in the original presentation. Correcting those placements requires work in the Remix toolkit. Outdoor areas can therefore show a larger immediate gain than enclosed rooms, where misplaced lights and inherited geometry are easier to notice.

Yes, in the sense that path tracing can provide bounce light, reflections, and shadows that the original renderer does not calculate in the same way. The improvement is not uniform across every location. Outdoor scenes with strong sunlight, reflective surfaces, and visible sky illumination are the clearest showcase. Interiors can gain more natural falloff and indirect light after their sources are correctly authored, but uncorrected sources may produce floating or implausible illumination.
“Improved” also depends on your preferred art direction. The original game has a deliberate, recognizable look built around its existing lightmaps and stencil-style effects. RTX Remix can make a scene more physically coherent while making it less familiar. A player seeking a faithful restoration may prefer the original renderer; a player who wants New Vegas rebuilt around modern light transport may accept unfinished rooms as the price of experimentation.
NVIDIA describes RTX Remix as a runtime that intercepts compatible legacy draw calls and supports path tracing, replacement materials, and neural rendering. Its definition of compatibility is specific: A game is considered compatible if RTX Remix can intercept most of its drawing instructions.
That describes whether the runtime can receive the game’s rendering work, not whether every scene will look correct. NVIDIA also cautions that compatibility “doesn’t guarantee a bug-free experience initially.”

Does RTX Remix increase FPS or reduce it?
There is no published, controlled Fallout: New Vegas benchmark that compares the original renderer and the RTX release on the same hardware, resolution, preset, and scene. Do not treat any single frame-rate number as a universal result.
The project developer reported that performance had “more than doubled” during development, but that statement does not specify a common test scene, hardware, resolution, or starting frame rate. A later individual report described up to 100 frames per second and usually around 70 on a mobile RTX 5080 using DLSS Performance at maximum settings. That is a user setup report, not a repeatable FNV benchmark, and mobile GPU power limits can vary substantially between laptops.
Several features can change the result independently of the renderer:
- Path-tracing workload: scene complexity, light count, reflections, and volumetric effects alter the cost from one location to another.
- Resolution and preset: higher output resolution and maximum settings increase the number of rays and pixels that must be processed.
- DLSS and ray reconstruction: upscaling and reconstruction can reduce the rendered internal resolution and alter image quality and latency.
- Neural rendering and frame generation: these can change displayed frame rate without representing the same amount of natively rendered work.
- GPU model and power limit: desktop and mobile versions of a GPU are not interchangeable performance references.
NVIDIA’s March 13, 2025 RTX Remix 1.0 release notes provide useful technology context, but not Fallout: New Vegas measurements. NVIDIA reported that path-traced mods in its examples could reach “up to 8X performance over native” and that Neural Radiance Cache improved Half-Life 2 RTX performance by 15%. Those figures belong to NVIDIA’s stated examples and should not be presented as New Vegas results.
The original game is dramatically less demanding than a path-traced version and has a mature performance baseline. If consistent frame pacing and predictable behavior matter more than new lighting, the original renderer has the advantage.

What GPU do I need for New Vegas RTX?
No universal minimum or recommended GPU specification is established in the available release information. The project author states that the FNV RTX release is compatible with AMD RX 6000 or newer graphics cards, desktop Intel Arc GPUs, and NVIDIA hardware. That is an author-provided compatibility statement, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or image quality on every model.

| Configuration | GPU information established | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Original New Vegas renderer | Far less demanding than the path-traced release; mature baseline | A current universal FPS table was not stated |
| FNV RTX path tracing | Author reports AMD RX 6000+, desktop Intel Arc, and NVIDIA compatibility | No controlled minimum, recommended model, or same-hardware benchmark was stated |
| FNV-DLSS5 raster plus DLAA/neural rendering | Uses the original raster image and disables Remix path tracing | No universal GPU requirement or comparative FPS table was stated |
Use the author’s compatibility statement as a starting point, then evaluate the features you intend to enable. A card may launch the mod yet require a lower resolution, a less aggressive preset, or an upscaler to maintain the responsiveness you want. Conversely, a high-end card can still encounter a scene-specific bottleneck or a visual bug caused by inherited game data rather than raw GPU speed.
Is Fallout New Vegas RTX compatible with my mods?
Compatibility is renderer-specific
RTX Remix replaces the DirectX 9 rendering path. NVIDIA explains that early DirectX 9 games can mix fixed-function and shader pipelines, and that only the fixed-function portions may be enhanced. Its rule of thumb is that games from roughly 2000–2005 and DirectX 8 or early DirectX 9 fixed-function titles are more likely to work, while shader-heavy DirectX 9.0c games are less likely to work cleanly.
Fallout: New Vegas is therefore a project-specific compatibility case, not proof that every New Vegas renderer feature or mod will pass through correctly. A mod that changes meshes, materials, post-processing, shaders, or draw-call behavior can interact differently with the Remix runtime than it does with the original renderer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat to expect from an existing load order
Keep your original installation and mod profile intact before experimenting. The safest comparison is a clean or minimally modified profile, followed by incremental additions. Start with the RTX release and the assets it expects, verify that the base game reaches gameplay, and then add visual or gameplay modifications one group at a time. If a problem appears after a specific addition, you have a practical way to identify the conflict instead of treating the entire load order as suspect.
Do not assume that a mod working in the original renderer will look identical under path tracing. A texture may load while its material response changes; a light may remain visible but illuminate a different area; and an effect implemented through the old shader path may not be enhanced at all. NVIDIA’s compatibility warning is important here: interception of most drawing instructions does not promise a bug-free result.

- Keep a separate copy or mod profile for the original game so you can return to the stable renderer.
- Install the RTX release according to its current package instructions, then launch the base game before adding optional visual changes.
- Check an outdoor area and an interior. This confirms both that path tracing is active and that your installation is not hiding scene-specific light-placement problems.
- Add other mods gradually, testing after each group. Renderer, shader, material, and post-processing changes deserve particular caution.
- If an interior has implausible illumination, treat it as a scene-light authoring issue first. The project notes that correcting some floating sources requires the Remix toolkit.
The release’s decision not to include replacement assets means that your existing texture choices remain part of the visual result. A screenshot comparison is meaningful only when the asset set, resolution, upscaling mode, and lighting configuration are also recorded.
FNV-DLSS5: the non-path-traced option
The FNV-DLSS5 README documents a different workflow. Extract the host into the Fallout: New Vegas folder, place the specified DLSS and neural-rendering files in the .trex directory, and launch with PLAY-FNV-DLAA.bat. Follow the release’s exact file list; do not substitute files from an unrelated Remix package.
This configuration explicitly states: No. This release intentionally disables Remix path tracing and presents the original New Vegas raster image to the DLAA and Neural Rendering path.
The practical consequence is straightforward: it can improve edge stability or reconstruction while retaining the original game’s lighting and art direction. If you expect bounce light, path-traced reflections, or volumetric-cloud changes from this setup, you are using the wrong configuration.
Returning to the original renderer
When troubleshooting, remove the RTX variables rather than changing several things at once. Restore the original executable and mod profile you preserved, confirm that the base game works, and then decide whether the path-traced release or the DLSS5 raster enhancement solves the problem you were trying to fix. This staged rollback is especially useful when a visual error could come from either a renderer change or a mod conflict.
Five-axis comparison
| Axis | Original game | FNV RTX path tracing | FNV-DLSS5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lighting fidelity | Established baked and stencil-style presentation | Physically based bounce light, reflections, and shadows; inherited light placement can look wrong indoors | Original raster lighting; no Remix path tracing |
| Performance | Far lower rendering demand | GPU-intensive and highly scene-, preset-, resolution-, and feature-dependent; no controlled FNV FPS table stated | Still uses the original raster image, with DLAA/neural processing changing the workload |
| Compatibility | Mature baseline for conventional New Vegas mods | Depends on DirectX 9 interception and how each mod uses fixed-function or shader paths | Separate file and launcher workflow; compatibility depends on that host setup |
| Maintenance | Established troubleshooting practices | Work in progress; runtime updates and scene fixes may change behavior | Requires the documented .trex files and launcher |
| Art direction | Familiar New Vegas look | Modern physically lit reinterpretation | Familiar raster look with neural/DLAA processing |
Common problems and practical fixes
The game launches but lighting looks unchanged
First determine which configuration you installed. FNV-DLSS5 is expected to look like the original raster image because it disables path tracing. In the path-traced release, verify that you are launching the RTX configuration rather than the original executable or a DLSS5 batch file.

This is a known limitation of inherited light placement. The project author says some original lights sit in the middle of rooms. Test another location to determine whether the issue is local, then report or correct the source through the project’s Remix-toolkit workflow if you are comfortable editing scene data. Changing GPU settings will not move a light source.

A mod works normally without Remix but fails with it
Return to a minimal profile and add the suspect mod alone. Mods that alter shaders, draw calls, materials, or post-processing are more likely to expose renderer differences. If the mod is essential to your playthrough and cannot be made stable, the original renderer is the appropriate choice for that load order.
Frame rate varies sharply between locations
Path tracing cost follows scene complexity rather than the game’s age. Compare the same location at the same resolution and preset before drawing conclusions. DLSS, ray reconstruction, neural rendering, and frame generation can all change the displayed result, so record which features are active when you compare settings.
The release becomes unstable after an update
Because the RTX project is a work in progress and RTX Remix itself evolves, a runtime change can alter compatibility. Keep the previously working package and original game profile available, then test the new version without overwriting your fallback. NVIDIA’s compatibility guidance explicitly warns that interception does not guarantee a bug-free experience initially.
Which version should you choose?
Choose the original renderer if reliability comes first
Use the original game when you have a large established mod list, need predictable behavior, or prefer New Vegas’s familiar lighting. Its lower rendering demand also makes performance easier to reason about, even though a universal modern FPS table is not provided here.
Choose RTX Remix if lighting is the reason you are replaying
The path-traced release is for players who want to see the Mojave rebuilt around bounce light, reflections, shadows, and volumetric clouds. Expect an experimental process: outdoor scenes may be transformative, interiors may expose misplaced sources, and compatibility must be tested rather than assumed. The project author describes it as work in progress while stating that the base game should already be completable.
Choose FNV-DLSS5 if you want the original image with neural cleanup
FNV-DLSS5 is the middle path for players who want to preserve the original raster lighting and art direction while using DLAA and neural rendering. Its launcher and file placement are distinct from the path-traced release, and its intentional lack of path tracing is a feature, not a missing switch.
Bottom line for a New Vegas replay
Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix is best understood as an ambitious community lighting overhaul, not a finished replacement for the original game. It can deliver the largest visual change through path-traced bounce light, reflections, shadows, and volumetric clouds, but inherited light placement and renderer-specific compatibility make the result uneven. The original renderer remains the dependable baseline. FNV-DLSS5 offers a separate compromise by keeping the original raster image and applying DLAA/neural rendering without Remix path tracing. Choose according to the experience you value: physical-light experimentation, neural image refinement, or stable familiarity.
