Fans quoted after Diablo II: Resurrected – Reign of the Warlock was announced and released on February 11, 2026, reacted with disbelief and joy at the prospect of a major new chapter for a decades-old game. Windows Central’s launch-day report captured that excitement alongside complaints about the expansion’s launch price and the Warlock’s lack of support for legacy graphics. Those comments are vivid examples—not a poll or a measure of the whole player base.
Why the reveal hit longtime fans so hard
Blizzard billed the Warlock as the first new playable class added to Diablo II in 25 years. For players accustomed to the game’s long-running, familiar class roster, that made the announcement itself feel almost improbable. Windows Central’s February 12, 2026 report quoted Reddit users saying “I just cried. Already bought” and “What a day to be a D2 fan,” and pointed to an X post expressing disbelief that Diablo II was getting new content in 2026. Read the launch-reaction report.
The emotion is best understood as a collection of selected fan responses. Windows Central’s article is a bylined launch report, not a representative survey; it does not establish how common those reactions were across all players. Its author also expressed personal enthusiasm, which is distinct from the fan comments quoted in the piece.
What Reign of the Warlock adds
The expansion is more than a new character choice. Blizzard’s February 11, 2026 announcement lists class content alongside changes to endgame play and inventory management. Blizzard’s release announcement describes these additions:

- Diablo II: Resurrected breathes new life into Blizzard Entertainment’s acclaimed ARPG and its expansion, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, from beginning to end. Return to fight for Sanctuary and discover the fate of the mysterious Dark Wanderer rebuilt in all-new 3D graphics, brand-new cinematics, remastered audio… and the same classic Diablo II gameplay you remember.
- The Warlock: a new playable class, with demon-binding and devouring mechanics. In a Windows Central interview, designer Timothy Vasconcellos said there are “over 180 combinations of demons you can Bind or Devour.” That is a developer’s description of the class mechanics, not a measure of player choice or reaction.
- Terror Zone changes: additional controls and rotation changes for this endgame activity.
- Heralds of Terror and Colossal Ancients: Heralds of Terror and statues that unlock the Colossal Ancients encounter add further endgame challenges.
- Inventory quality-of-life features: a loot filter, expanded stash functions and two additional stash tabs.
- Character capacity: the DLC includes two character slots.
Lead Producer Matthew Cederquist described the development approach in an interview as balancing multiplayer with solo play, emphasizing player choice, and preserving the difficulty and item rarity associated with the game’s “long chase.” He also said the team saw the 30th Anniversary as an opportunity to surprise players, while leaving open what the release might mean for the series’ future. Read the Windows Central interview with the developers.
Not every response was celebratory
Windows Central also reported objections from some players about the $25 launch price and the fact that the Warlock cannot be played with legacy graphics. The $25 figure reflects launch-era reporting, not a verified current price; check the relevant official store for current pricing and availability. The graphics complaint points to a specific trade-off for players who prefer the original visual presentation: the new class is not available in that mode.

Does Xbox Game Pass include the expansion?
No—not as part of the base game listing described in Blizzard’s announcement. Blizzard says the Xbox Game Pass base game does not include Reign of the Warlock; players need a separate DLC purchase or an edition that includes it. Store listings and edition details can change, so confirm what a particular purchase includes before checking out.

Blizzard’s Diablo II: Resurrected forum notice, dated October 6, 2026, says existing Expansion characters can no longer be transferred into Reign of the Warlock starting November 16, 2026. Blizzard says the change is intended to stop items obtained through automated farming from entering the Reign of the Warlock era and to protect fair play. If you have an eligible character to move, complete the transfer before that cutoff. Read Blizzard’s character-transfer notice.
