Use quarterback projections to estimate fantasy points and rankings to help make a choice—but trust neither number on its own. Before comparing them, match the scoring format and time period, then check the assumptions behind each list. A disagreement is a prompt to investigate playing role, health, rushing production and team context, not proof that one source is wrong.
What is the difference between a QB projection and a ranking?
Projections estimate fantasy output
A projection estimates a player’s expected fantasy production for a particular scoring system and period. It is a model output built from inputs and assumptions, not a promise of what the player will score. For example, a season projection estimates total points over the season under its stated assumptions; a weekly projection estimates output for a particular week.
Rankings order players for a choice
A ranking puts players in order for a decision, such as whom to draft or start. Some rankings mostly sort players by projected points. Others also weigh factors that a single expected-points figure may not show. PFF says its rankings incorporate considerations such as uncertainty in volume, replacement-level floors, positional scarcity, variance, roster needs and upside in addition to its automated projection outputs: PFF’s explanation of rankings and projections.
A rank is also a relative prediction: placing a quarterback at a particular position rank implies an expectation about where he will finish compared with other quarterbacks, as FantasyPros explains in its guide to expert rankings and projections.

Why do quarterback rankings and projections disagree?
They may be answering different questions. A season-long points model estimates output under its assumptions. A draft rank may account for the chance that a player loses his job, his range of outcomes, the quality of replacement options, your roster needs or the upside you want to target. A high projection does not automatically mean a quarterback is the best choice at his draft spot.
League format matters, too. In a one-quarterback league, managers can often wait longer to fill the position; in superflex, where a quarterback can occupy an additional starting slot, quarterbacks are more valuable to the lineup. Scoring rules also change comparisons: the value of passing touchdowns and rushing yards can shift a quarterback’s projected total. Check that both lists use your league’s scoring and lineup rules before treating their difference as meaningful.

For weekly choices, matchup and availability can change expected output. The Fantasy Society says its weekly projections account for recent scoring, opponent adjustments and official injury designations, and model a spread of outcomes. Its stated method does not capture every late or qualitative development, including coaching changes, trades after the last update, weather, betting lines or midweek role changes. That is one publisher’s description of its process, not a universal industry standard: The Fantasy Society’s projection methodology.
How to use rankings and projections for a QB decision
- Match the format. Confirm the scoring rules, lineup requirements and league type. A ranking for a one-quarterback league may not fit a superflex draft, and a list using different scoring can produce different point totals.
- Match the time horizon. Identify whether you are making a draft, weekly-start or rest-of-season decision. A season projection, weekly projection and rest-of-season ranking are not interchangeable.
- Check when the list was updated. New injuries, depth-chart changes and other developments can make an older ranking or projection less useful. ESPN’s Mike Clay 2026 NFL Projection Guide was updated September 9, 2026; it describes upcoming regular-season projections based on a 17-game assumption and cautions that injuries affect comparisons. Treat its totals as estimates under that guide’s assumptions, not as a prediction that each player will appear in all 17 games: ESPN’s 2026 NFL Projection Guide.
- Verify the quarterback’s role and expected volume. Check whether he is expected to start, how secure the job is and whether another player could take meaningful snaps. A point estimate can conceal the risk that a player’s workload changes.
- Look at rushing production separately. Rushing yards and touchdowns add fantasy points and can change a quarterback’s floor or ceiling. Do not assume two similarly ranked passers have similar rushing value.
- Compare the assumptions, not just the numbers. Look for differences in health expectations, team context, opponent or schedule inputs, scoring and range of outcomes. A point total without its assumptions is difficult to evaluate.
- Make the choice for your roster and risk tolerance. Use rank as decision support, not an instruction. If sources disagree, work out what is driving the difference, then decide how much uncertainty and upside make sense for your league and roster.
What a real rankings-versus-projections gap can tell you
FantasyPros’ 2026 preseason example listed Jaxson Dart at ECR QB11 and projection rank QB6, with 311.5 projected fantasy points. Those are FantasyPros figures from that article, not universal rankings or guaranteed production; they can change as the source updates its numbers. The comparison is useful as a prompt to examine factors such as health, rushing floor, offensive scheme and projected game script—not as evidence that either number must be correct: FantasyPros’ 2026 comparison.

FantasyPros puts the point plainly: “Neither number is ‘right’ on its own.” The practical value of a gap is in identifying what to investigate. The available methodology descriptions and examples do not establish that quarterback rankings consistently outperform projections, or vice versa.
