Red Storm’s game-making role has reportedly ended, but the studio’s early Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon games left a lasting mark on tactical shooters.

Red Storm Entertainment has not been reported closed. In March 2026, VGC and Game Developer reported that Ubisoft ended the studio’s active game development and cut 105 jobs, while Red Storm continued in a support role. That is the end of its game-making function—not, on the available reporting, the end of the studio itself.

What changed at Red Storm

VGC reported on March 19, 2026, that Ubisoft would end Red Storm’s game development and eliminate 105 jobs, with the studio continuing to provide global IT and Snowdrop support. Game Developer also reported 105 cuts and said Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy franchises would continue across its worldwide studio network. Both accounts described an internal Ubisoft announcement; this was not presented as a public Ubisoft press release. VGC’s report and Game Developer’s report describe a functional change, not a confirmed closure of the studio’s doors. The 105 figure is a reported number, not an independently audited headcount.

From a permanent collaboration to Rainbow Six

Red Storm began in 1996. Ubisoft’s retrospective traces its founding to the success of Tom Clancy’s SSN and a decision to make the collaboration permanent. The studio’s defining early breakthrough arrived with Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, released in 1998. GameSpot lists its first release as August 21, 1998, with PC among its platforms. Ubisoft’s studio retrospective and GameSpot’s game listing mark the beginning of a different kind of shooter for many players.

Steve Reid, Red Storm founder and studio managing director, described the ambition as bringing a particular kind of thriller into a first-person shooter: “We set out to take the essence of the ‘Clancy feel’ – its heroic structure, the idea that one individual can change the course of large events – and then implement that in an FPS game,”

The appeal of a thinking person’s shooter

Red Storm’s original design distinction was not simply that its games moved more slowly. It was that preparation and action were tightly connected: a plan mattered, a shot had consequences, and rushing could turn a controlled operation into a failed one. Elizabeth Loverso, then vice president of product development at Ubisoft Red Storm, put the break with the prevailing style plainly: “Our goal was for our game to be more realistic, and definitely to break with the run-and-gun gameplay that was the trend at the time,” She summed up the result: “The revolution was that we made a game that became a thinking person’s shooter,”

That phrase captures a recognizable player habit: pausing to consider an approach before moving, rather than treating every encounter as an invitation to sprint and fire. It is a design legacy, not a claim that every later game in the franchises used the same formula.

Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon took that thinking outdoors

Rainbow Six framed its early action around tense indoor counterterrorism operations. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon, which followed in 2001, shifted the series toward outdoor environments and war zones, according to Ubisoft’s retrospective. The settings and scale changed, but both offered a space for deliberate decisions rather than pure reflex.

The contrast is more useful than a winner-and-loser comparison: Rainbow Six made close, confined spaces part of the pressure, while Ghost Recon widened the frame. Red Storm’s early identity grew from making the player think about where to go and what an action might cost.

Red Storm mattered, but it did not make every Clancy game alone

Red Storm joined Ubisoft in 2000. Its later history included contributions to projects beyond its original series, including The Division and virtual-reality work. Ubisoft’s account also describes game creation across a worldwide network of studios with specialized roles. The Tom Clancy game universe became a multi-studio effort: Red Storm created key early games and helped establish the franchises, but it was not the sole creator of every title carrying the Clancy name.

That distinction matters when saying goodbye. The studio’s influence is substantial without needing to assign it sole authorship of a sprawling catalog. Lauren Stone, a writer at Ubisoft Massive who worked on Rainbow Six Siege and The Division, described why the collaboration between story and play matters: “The biggest mistake we could make is to treat gameplay and narrative as two separate things, when in fact both are equal parts of the experience and must work together to create the best game possible,”

Ubisoft’s earlier studio profile is evidence of past projects and contributions; it predates the March 2026 change and should not be read as a description of Red Storm’s current staffing or responsibilities.

A farewell to a way of playing

For a tactical shooter fan, Red Storm’s eulogy is not just a list of game titles. It is a tribute to a particular rhythm: patience before the breach, preparation before the first shot, and the uneasy knowledge that a decision could matter. The studio’s game-making role may have ended, according to the March 2026 reports, but those habits remain part of what its early shooters made memorable.
