Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a compelling return to a haunted classic, with detailed environments, striking character designs and the series’ camera-based ghost combat intact. Its revised dodge and other changes may make encounters more approachable, but critics also report abrupt difficulty shifts, awkward controls and uneven navigation. The result is an atmospheric remake whose combat and pacing can interrupt the fear it works so hard to create.
What kind of remake is Fatal Frame II?
KOEI TECMO describes Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake as a full remake of the second FATAL FRAME / Project Zero II game. Twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura enter Minakami Village, where the Camera Obscura—a camera used to capture and contain supernatural beings—remains central to survival. The publisher says the remake gives the camera a broader role in exploration as well as combat, and calls out Special Shots as part of the updated system. KOEI TECMO’s product page describes the returning mechanic as repelling wraiths by photographing them.
The remake updates graphics, sound, gameplay systems and controls. One notable addition lets Mio hold Mayu’s hand. TechRadar’s PC reviewer also reports that this can regenerate health; that detail is the reviewer’s account, not wording from the publisher. The official product page and launch notice outline the remake and its features.
What works best: the haunted atmosphere
The clearest strength in the available reviews is presentation. TechRadar’s PC review praises the detailed, atmospheric environments and stylized character models. Creative Bloq’s Switch 2 review likewise calls the visuals creepy and highlights the atmosphere and Japanese audio option. Those are reviewers’ critical impressions, not measured performance results, but they point to a remake that understands the appeal of returning to an eerie village and letting its spaces do much of the unsettling work. Is the combat frustrating?
It can be, although the reviews do not describe the same experience. TechRadar found the new dodge useful and encounters more manageable, while noting that changing the series’ established combat may divide longtime fans. The complaint is not simply that the camera is a bad idea: the Camera Obscura is still the defining defensive tool. The friction comes from how the remake layers enemy behavior and balance on top of that familiar loop.
TechRadar objected to the red ghost transformation. In that reviewer’s account, ghosts can restore health and deal more damage after being defeated, producing sharp difficulty spikes. The review also says a launch-day patch reduced the threat enough that standard difficulty felt trivial to that reviewer. Separately, KOEI TECMO’s update page records changes on March 16, 2026, including adjustments to film supply, Fatal Frame damage, enemy HP and agitation behavior. The launch-day impression and the later update record are different pieces of evidence; neither establishes the current balance on every platform. Navigation, controls and pacing vary by reviewer
TechRadar found the remake’s clues and map helpful, sometimes to the point that clearer escape routes reduced tension. Creative Bloq, by contrast, found objectives and map cues unclear in places, reporting that getting lost led to backtracking. That disagreement matters: the remake’s guidance may feel like a welcome reduction in ambiguity to some players and an unreliable aid to others.
Control criticism is also platform-specific. Creative Bloq described the Switch 2 controls as clunky and reported a 30 FPS cap shared by the console versions discussed in that review; it also noted that Switch 2 supports handheld motion controls. TechRadar’s PC reviewer found keyboard support poor and recommended using a controller. These are individual review findings, not equivalent testing across every platform or a guarantee about later builds. For PC, a controller is a sensible option if keyboard play feels awkward, but the evidence here does not make one a requirement. Creative Bloq’s Switch 2 review; TechRadar’s PC review.

Is Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake worth playing?
If atmosphere, supernatural imagery and the Camera Obscura’s unusual ghost-photography combat are the draw, this remake has clear appeal. The review record is less reassuring if you need consistently smooth controls or carefully calibrated combat: PC and Switch 2 critics both identify friction, but in different areas, and TechRadar’s account of combat balance shifted around a launch patch. Creative Bloq scored its Switch 2 review 6/10; that is one publication’s score for that version, not an aggregate rating. Creative Bloq, 2026.
The review evidence also has limits: TechRadar says its reviewer played close to twenty hours on PC with a DualSense controller, while Creative Bloq identifies Switch 2 as its reviewed platform. Those perspectives are useful for understanding the reported strengths and problems, but they are not a cross-platform test or a guarantee of how the game plays after subsequent updates.
