Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is a versus-first fighting game whose sharp presentation, expressive REV combat system, rollback netcode, and cross-platform play are its clearest strengths. Its main trade-off is that the competitive fighting has more depth than its solo campaign, Episodes of South Town, which reviewers found repetitive or modest beside larger fighting-game campaigns. It is best suited to players who want to learn a distinctive combat system and fight online; players seeking a substantial story adventure should temper expectations.
What kind of fighting game is City of the Wolves?
SNK released Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves on April 24, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Epic Games Store. It revives the Fatal Fury series as a modern, versus-focused fighter: the central appeal is learning its character-specific tools and combat systems, then applying them in matches. The release details and platforms are listed in SNK’s announcement.

The game offers two control schemes, including a Smart option intended to make inputs more approachable. TechRadar describes the underlying game as a four-button fighter. Easier inputs can help newcomers get moves out, but they do not remove the need to learn spacing, timing, defensive choices, and when to take risks.
How does the REV System affect combat?
REV is the defining system: it adds offensive and defensive options that give exchanges more texture than simply trading basic attacks. Its appeal is in the decisions it creates—when to press an advantage, how to respond under pressure, and how to use a character’s tools effectively. That gives the fighting a strong learning curve: newcomers can start with the accessible controls, while players who enjoy practice and matchup knowledge have more to explore.
#1 Best Overall
That depth is also the game’s clearest dividing line. If you want a fighter to dip into casually, Smart controls offer an entry point. If you want to understand why a match turns in one player’s favor, expect to spend time learning the system rather than treating it as a button-mashing game.
How good are the online features?
SNK lists rollback netcode, cross-platform functionality, and ranked, casual, and room matches. Those are meaningful features for a game built around versus play: rollback is designed to make online exchanges feel more responsive, while cross-platform support lets players on supported platforms compete across ecosystems. In its launch-era review, GameSpot reported smooth performance in its own sessions; that is a reviewer’s historical experience, not a guarantee of current connection quality, matchmaking speed, or player population.
Online service conditions can change after release. The publisher-confirmed feature set establishes what the game supports, but it does not establish how active queues or match quality are in your region today.

What is the single-player content like?
Episodes of South Town
Episodes of South Town (EOST) is a solo mode built around selecting fights from a map and progressing through combat challenges. It is not a large, freely explorable world. GameSpot and TechRadar found it repetitive or thin compared with bigger contemporary fighting-game campaigns. Tom’s Guide was more positive about the quantity of solo content, so the disagreement is largely about how engaging that structure feels rather than whether there are solo activities to play.
If you enjoy a succession of fights, character progression, and a reason to keep playing outside online matches, EOST may provide worthwhile time. If you expect an expansive story campaign with extensive exploration or cinematic storytelling, this is not that kind of mode.
Arcade mode
Arcade mode provides another route through character stories and solo fights. It complements EOST, but the game’s strongest identity remains its versus combat rather than a single-player narrative designed to rival a dedicated action game.

How does the game look and sound?
Reviewers highlighted the game’s striking presentation alongside its combat. The visual style gives matches a strong sense of character, and the overall presentation helps distinguish the revival from a purely functional competitive package. This is a notable part of its appeal, though it does not change the core trade-off: the fighting is more developed than the solo campaign.
Roster, editions, and what you get
Roster counts need a date attached. At launch, SNK announced 17 base fighters and five Season Pass 1 fighters—22 in total with an internet connection and game update. Season Pass 2 later expanded the roster, so 22 is not a current total. SNK’s first-anniversary announcement also names a Standard digital edition with the base game and a Legend Edition that includes Season Passes 1 and 2. It lists physical editions for PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series X|S; Steam and Epic are digital.

Is Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves worth buying?
It is a strong fit if your priority is a distinctive, learnable fighting system, stylish presentation, and online matches with rollback and cross-platform support. Its Smart controls may ease the first steps, but the deeper appeal comes from improving through practice. The purchase is harder to justify if a substantial solo campaign is your main requirement: EOST offers map-selected fights and progression, not a sprawling adventure, and reviewers differed on how satisfying that content is.
For a physical console copy, verify the exact edition and included DLC before checkout; for a digital copy, compare the Standard and Legend contents in your storefront and confirm the current regional price. The best choice depends on whether you value the core fighter on its own or want both season passes included.
