FedEx treats trading cards as valuable collector’s items. For U.S. shipments, the 2026 Service Guide sets a maximum declared value of US$1,000 for this category. That amount is a limit on FedEx’s potential liability, not insurance or a guaranteed payout: you must prove the loss or damage, show that FedEx was at fault, and show that the cards were packaged adequately.

What FedEx declared value means for trading cards

Declared value is FedEx’s stated maximum liability for a shipment when it is lost, damaged, delayed, or misdelivered. FedEx explicitly says, “Declared value is not shipping insurance.” Entering an amount on the shipping record therefore does not buy an automatic reimbursement or guarantee that FedEx will pay that amount.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The declared amount should represent the cost to repair or replace the shipment, but FedEx investigates every claim. To be reimbursed, you must provide proof of the loss or damage and proof that FedEx was at fault. Even when liability is established, FedEx limits reimbursement to the repair cost, depreciated value, or replacement cost, whichever is less. The figure you enter is a ceiling on liability, not a promise that the declared amount equals the card’s market price.

Why the distinction matters for collectibles

A trading card can have a volatile market price, a grading premium, or sentimental value that is difficult to document. Declared value does not convert those characteristics into a guaranteed cash settlement. A claim still depends on evidence of what was shipped, what happened to it, its provable value, and whether the packaging and handling support a finding that FedEx was responsible.

FedEx’s trading-card limit

The 2026 U.S. FedEx Service Guide places collector’s items—including coins, stamps, sports cards, souvenirs, and memorabilia—in a category with a US$1,000 maximum declared value. FedEx’s current trading-card FAQ likewise says that trading cards for general use have a US$1,000 coverage limit and that all trading cards are treated as valuable collectibles.

This is a U.S.-specific figure tied to the 2026 Service Guide. It is not a statement that every FedEx service, country, or future guide uses the same limit. Check the terms that apply to the origin, destination, and service you are buying.

Sports cards, Pokémon cards, and other trading cards

FedEx’s FAQ does not limit the rule to one sport or franchise. It describes trading cards for general use as valuable collectibles. Sports cards, Pokémon cards, and comparable collectible cards should therefore be treated as falling within the same declared-value framework rather than as ordinary paper goods.

Why entering a higher amount does not create more protection

FedEx says attempts to exceed a Service Guide maximum are null and void. Typing a number above the permitted ceiling does not purchase additional liability. If the shipment’s real value exceeds the ceiling, document that value honestly and investigate separate protection before shipping rather than relying on an inflated declaration.

What a trading-card claim can cover

A claim can concern a shipment that was lost, delivered with missing contents, physically damaged, delayed, or misdelivered. The declared-value policy applies the same basic test in each case: establish an actual loss or damage, establish FedEx fault, comply with the applicable claim procedure, and show a determinable amount.

Loss or non-delivery

If tracking shows that a package never reached the recipient, preserve the shipping record and establish what cards were inside. A tracking status alone does not prove the cards’ value. Use purchase records, payment confirmation, appraisals, or other evidence that connects the cards to the claimed amount.

Damage

Damage may include crushed holders, bent cards, water exposure, or other physical harm. Photograph the carton, labels, cushioning, holders, and cards before changing anything. If a card can be repaired or reholdered, obtain a written estimate or invoice. FedEx can limit payment to the lower applicable repair, depreciated-value, or replacement figure.

Missing contents

A delivered carton that is empty or short one or more cards is different from a shipment that was never delivered. Keep the outer package and all internal materials, photograph signs of tampering or compression, and identify exactly which cards are missing. Use the missing-content deadline rather than the longer undelivered-shipment deadline.

Delay or misdelivery

Declared value is defined broadly enough to include delay and misdelivery, but a declared amount alone does not establish that a payment is due. The claim still requires evidence of the event, the resulting loss, and FedEx’s responsibility under the applicable service terms.

What can defeat or reduce a claim

  • Insufficient proof: An unsupported assertion about a card’s value or condition is unlikely to establish the amount of loss.
  • No evidence of FedEx fault: FedEx requires proof that it caused the loss or damage. A shipment that was already defective or incorrectly addressed may not satisfy that test.
  • Inadequate packaging: FedEx may determine that it was not at fault when the cards were not protected well enough for normal handling.
  • Prohibited commodities: FedEx excludes reimbursement for prohibited commodities even when a value was declared.
  • Exceeding a category maximum: A declaration above the Service Guide maximum is null and void; it does not expand liability.
  • Discarding evidence: Throwing away the carton, damaged holders, or packing materials can prevent an inspection and weaken the claim.
  • Missing the filing window: A late claim can be rejected even if the package was genuinely damaged or lost.

Claim deadlines by shipment type

FedEx’s current claims page lists different deadlines for damage, missing contents, and a shipment that was never delivered. Count from the shipment date shown in the applicable shipping record.

Situation Location Deadline stated by FedEx
Damaged package or missing contents United States 60 calendar days from shipment
Undelivered or lost shipment United States Within nine months of shipment
Damaged package or missing contents International 21 days

The 60-day rule is for damage or missing contents in U.S. shipments; it is not interchangeable with the nine-month period for a package that was never delivered. The listed international period applies to damaged or missing contents. International services can have additional terms, so verify the rules for the exact lane and service before sending a high-value card.

How to file a FedEx trading-card claim

  1. Preserve everything immediately. Keep the outer box, shipping label, inner packaging, card holders, cards, and any fragments or moisture-damaged materials. Do not clean, repackage, repair, sell, or discard anything while the claim is pending.
  2. Collect shipment details. Record the tracking number or PRO number, shipment date, shipper and recipient names and addresses, service used, and a concise description of each card and the event. For a partial loss, list which cards arrived and which are missing.
  3. File through FedEx Claims Online. Submit the claim within the deadline that matches the event and geography. Describe the sequence factually: when the package was tendered, what tracking shows, how the carton appeared, and what was missing or damaged.
  4. Upload proof of value and condition. Include original purchase or manufacturer invoices, retail receipts, online-order confirmation with proof of payment, appraisals, repair estimates or invoices, photographs, and serial numbers where applicable. Pair each document with the card or cards it supports.
  5. Explain packaging and FedEx responsibility. Describe how the cards were protected and identify evidence of mishandling, crushing, puncture, water exposure, or an unexplained shortage. Do not claim a cause you cannot document.
  6. Cooperate with inspection requests. FedEx may require a self-inspection or an inspection of the package and contents. Keep the shipment unchanged and make it available until FedEx resolves the claim.
  7. Monitor the claim. Track its status in the Reports area of your FedEx account. If approved, FedEx says payment may be sent by check or electronic funds transfer.

Evidence checklist for collectible cards

Evidence What it establishes Practical detail
Tracking or PRO number Identifies the shipment and its scan history Save the original shipping receipt and screenshots of relevant scans.
Invoice, receipt, or online-order confirmation Purchase price and card identity Include proof of payment for online orders.
Appraisal or other valuation record Condition and documented value Use a dated document that identifies the specific card.
Photos of the carton and contents Physical condition and possible handling damage Photograph all sides of the box, labels, seals, cushioning, holders, and cards.
Repair estimate or invoice Cost to restore a damaged item Obtain a written estimate before authorizing work where possible.
Serial numbers or identifying marks Links the evidence to the exact item Include them when the card, slab, or related item has one.

No single document guarantees payment. Strong submissions connect the shipment record, the physical evidence, the card’s identity, the amount claimed, and the facts showing FedEx responsibility.

Packaging practices that protect your position

FedEx does not treat a declared value as a waiver of packaging obligations. Improper packaging can mean FedEx is not considered at fault. The policy does not turn one particular packing method into automatic coverage, so focus on preventing movement, bending, moisture exposure, and crushing during ordinary handling.

  • Place each card in a suitable protective holder and keep cards from sliding against one another.
  • Use a rigid outer container with cushioning that prevents the holders from shifting.
  • Fill empty space without putting pressure directly on card surfaces or corners.
  • Seal the carton securely and photograph the finished package and label before tendering it.
  • For expensive or irreplaceable cards, retain copies of the packing photographs and the complete shipping record.

These measures do not expand the declared-value ceiling or prove FedEx fault by themselves. They preserve evidence and reduce the chance that packaging becomes the reason liability is denied.

How FedEx may value the loss

FedEx’s policy uses the lowest applicable amount among repair cost, depreciated value, and replacement cost. That formula creates several practical consequences for cards:

Repairable damage

If a holder, case, or other component can be restored, a documented repair estimate may be more persuasive than an unsupported market listing. The estimate should identify the item and the work required.

Condition and depreciation

A card’s condition before shipment matters. A claim cannot assume that a previously worn or altered card was mint condition. Purchase records, dated photographs, appraisal notes, and grading documentation can help establish the starting condition.

Replacement evidence

Replacement cost must be tied to the same card or an objectively comparable replacement. Use records that identify the edition, set, number, grade, language, and other attributes that materially affect value. A general price guide or an unrelated listing may not establish the value of the specific card shipped.

Market volatility

Prices can change between purchase, shipment, and claim. Preserve the dated records you relied on and explain which date and transaction support the amount. Declared value does not guarantee the highest observed market price.

When FedEx’s declared value may be adequate

Using FedEx’s declared-value process may be practical when the shipment’s provable replacement value fits within the applicable ceiling, the cards are packaged carefully, and you can document both the transaction and any damage. It is especially important to understand that the process protects against a carrier-liability event, not every possible decline in market price or every cause of loss.

Before shipping, make a short record for each card: identity, condition, purchase or replacement evidence, declared amount, photographs, and the package contents. That record makes a later claim more precise and helps distinguish a carrier event from a disagreement about value.

What to do when a card is worth more than the limit

If a single card or a shipment is worth more than the applicable FedEx ceiling, do not assume that entering the full market price solves the problem. Compare a separate protection product or another shipping arrangement before tendering the package. FedEx’s policy recognizes that third-party insurance is separate and may provide broader protection, but the appropriate product depends on its own terms.

Comparison point Question to ask before choosing an alternative
Maximum collectible-item limit Is the limit high enough for the card, the whole parcel, and any declared set value?
Valuation method Does payment use market value, documented replacement cost, repair cost, or depreciation?
Causes of loss Does it cover carrier negligence only, or also theft, disappearance, accidental damage, and other named events?
Packaging conditions Are there mandatory holders, seals, photographs, or packing standards?
Deadlines and procedure How soon must notice and proof be submitted, and is an inspection required?
Geographic scope Does protection apply to domestic and international shipments on your route?
Deductible and fees What portion remains your responsibility, and are shipping charges reimbursed?

Read exclusions carefully. A product that advertises a high limit may still exclude unattended packages, inadequate packaging, prohibited items, or particular types of collectible value.

Common mistakes and the corresponding fix

  • Assuming the declared amount is an insurance payout: Treat it as a liability ceiling and prepare proof of actual loss, value, and FedEx fault.
  • Using the nine-month period for every problem: File damage and missing-content claims within the shorter applicable window.
  • Throwing away the box after opening: Keep every component until the claim is resolved.
  • Submitting only a marketplace screenshot: Add invoices, payment confirmation, photographs, and an appraisal or estimate when available.
  • Claiming the full peak market price: Support the amount with dated, card-specific evidence and recognize that FedEx applies the lower applicable repair, depreciated, or replacement amount.
  • Over-declaring a shipment: A figure above the Service Guide maximum is null and void, so it does not create extra protection.
  • Repairing or reselling the card before inspection: Preserve the original condition and follow FedEx’s inspection instructions first.

Examples of how the rules work

A damaged card within the ceiling

You receive a card with a crushed holder. You photograph the unopened carton, retain the holder and cushioning, obtain a written repair estimate, and file within the U.S. damage deadline. FedEx still investigates whether handling caused the damage and whether the proposed amount is the lower applicable repair, depreciated, or replacement figure.

A high-value card that exceeds the ceiling

A card purchased for more than the permitted collectible-item maximum is lost in transit. Entering its full purchase price would not expand FedEx’s liability. You can file with the available evidence, but the declared-value framework cannot provide protection above its category limit; separate coverage should have been considered before shipment.

A delivered box with one card missing

The tracking record shows delivery, but the carton contains only part of the shipment. Photograph the seal, carton, cushioning, and contents, identify the missing card, and use the U.S. missing-content deadline. Do not wait for the longer undelivered-shipment period.

A package that never arrives

If the shipment remains undelivered, preserve the tracking history and file under the U.S. lost or undelivered deadline. Include the card list and value records even if there is no damaged carton to inspect.

Practical takeaway

For U.S. shipments under the 2026 FedEx rules, trading cards are valuable collectibles with a US$1,000 maximum declared-value ceiling. That ceiling is not insurance and does not guarantee reimbursement. The strongest claim is timely, preserves the entire package, documents the cards and their value, demonstrates FedEx responsibility, and shows that the cards were packaged for normal handling. If the cards exceed the ceiling or require protection beyond carrier liability, arrange separate coverage before shipping.
