Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsually, no. Stopping an FFXIV subscription does not delete your characters, and deactivating an FFXIV service account is a separate action from deleting characters. Square Enix provides a way to reactivate a canceled service account through Mog Station.
The important exceptions are deliberate character deletion, data loss or corruption, prolonged loss of access under the Square Enix Account Terms, and a permanent Service Account Termination for serious or repeated violations. Those events affect different account objects and have different recovery options.

The short answer: billing cancellation is not character deletion
FFXIV uses several layers that players commonly call an “account.” Your Square Enix Account is the login identity. An FFXIV service account is the game-service record attached to that login, containing subscriptions, platform registrations and characters. A character is an individual game record inside the service account.
Because these are separate objects, the result depends on what happened:

- Adventure awaits you beyond the horizon in FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- This product is a digital 60-Day Game Time Card for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. It serves as a payment option that allows players to add 60 days of game time to their FFXIV account at the Standard subscription rate, subject to account limits. Both the game and game time are required to play.
- This product can be redeemed on service accounts registered with the Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or Steam versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, it cannot be redeemed on service accounts that have only the XBOX or Nintendo Switch 2 versions registered.
| Trigger | Object affected | What happens | Recovery described by Square Enix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel recurring subscription | Billing plan | Recurring charges stop; paid play time continues through the remaining billing period. | Resume service by subscribing again while the service account remains available. |
| Deactivate or cancel an FFXIV service account in Mog Station | FFXIV service account | The service account becomes inactive. Characters are not deleted by this action. | Use Service Account Status and select Reactivate Service Account. |
| Delete a character deliberately | Individual character | The selected character is removed. This is separate from service-account deactivation. | Character Reactivation Service may restore it, but Square Enix does not promise restoration in every case. |
| More than one year of Square Enix Account inactivity | Square Enix Account access | The Account Terms say access may be lost after more than one year of inactivity. | The reviewed terms do not publish a one-year FFXIV character-deletion schedule. |
| Service Account Termination for severe or repeated violations | FFXIV service access | Access is permanently removed, and other FFXIV service accounts associated with that Square Enix Account are also terminated. | Service Account Termination is not reversed by the penalty-point system. |
This distinction explains why an old character can still exist even when a launcher reports no active service account: the subscription, service-account status, license registration and character data are related but not identical.
What happens when you stop paying?
Canceling the recurring subscription
Canceling a recurring subscription stops the next automatic charge. It does not immediately erase the service account or its characters. The subscription FAQ states that paid play time continues until the end of the billing period already purchased. During that period, your access follows the terms of the active subscription.
After the paid period ends, the service account can be inactive because it has no current play time. That inactive state is not the same as deleting the account. A later subscription can be started again if the service account and its data remain available.

Deactivating the service account in Mog Station
Mog Station has a separate cancellation or deactivation control for the FFXIV service account. Square Enix’s character FAQ answers the question directly: “No, the deletion of characters is a separate process from deactivating your account.” You do not need to delete characters before deactivating the service account.
Deactivation can therefore be useful when you want to stop maintaining the service temporarily, but it should not be confused with a request to remove a character. Keep your Square Enix login details and any platform-registration information so that you can identify the same service account later.
Reactivating a canceled service account
To try to restore access, sign in to Mog Station with the Square Enix Account that owns the game, choose the relevant FFXIV service account, open the Service Account Status page and select Reactivate Service Account. Square Enix’s support wording says that this control is the route for returning to a service account in the future.

- A new adventure awaits in Norvrandt
- New jobs, including gun breaker and dancer
- New playable races: Viera and Hrothgar
- Level cap increase from 70 to 80
- New cities to explore: The Crystarium and Eulmore
The User Agreement qualifies that possibility. Reactivation depends on FFXIV still being available and the account data not having been deleted or corrupted. In other words, the button describes a supported recovery path, not an unconditional guarantee that every historical record can be brought back.

What the one-year clause actually says
Square Enix’s general Account Terms say a Square Enix Account may automatically lose access after more than one year of inactivity. That is an account-access rule. The official FFXIV material reviewed for this question does not state that every inactive FFXIV character is automatically deleted on a one-year timer.
It would therefore be inaccurate to tell returning players that their characters definitely disappear after 12 months, or that they are guaranteed to remain forever. The published language leaves the character-deletion schedule unspecified. If you have been away for a long time, first attempt the original Square Enix login and inspect the associated FFXIV service account in Mog Station.

How to interpret an old account safely
- Use the exact Square Enix Account originally linked to the character. A different email address can open a new or unrelated account with no characters.
- Check every FFXIV service account listed after signing in. A single Square Enix Account can contain more than one service account.
- Look for the service-account status and registered game licenses before concluding that the character record is gone.
- If the account cannot be accessed after the inactivity period, contact Square Enix Support and provide ownership information rather than creating another account and starting over.
When is access permanently removed?
Service Account Termination is an enforcement action
Service Account Termination is different from an unpaid subscription or a voluntary cancellation. Square Enix’s Account Penalty Policy states: “A Service Account Termination will permanently remove your access to Final Fantasy XIV.” The policy also says that other FFXIV service accounts associated with the same Square Enix Account are terminated as part of that action.
This is a penalty for severe or repeated violations, not a routine consequence of taking a break. Other Square Enix services may remain accessible unless Square Enix separately cancels the Square Enix Account itself, which is described as an exceptional action.

The penalty policy lists temporary suspension periods of three, 10 and 20 days. A related policy update describes penalty-point decay beginning after at least one year for cautions and after a minimum period of three to six years for temporary suspensions or more severe penalties. Those time periods concern the enforcement system; they do not create a timetable for deleting inactive characters.
Best Value
- Increased level cap from 50 to 60
- Dark Knight: Tank - Wields a two-handed greatsword and the power of darkness to deal damage to their foes
- Astrologian: Healer - Tap the power of the stars to cast potent healing magicks, while drawing energies from constellation-based divining cards to support your party
- Machinist: DPS - Deal damage from afar using a combination of firearms enhanced with various attachments, and mechanical turrets deployed on the battlefield
- Included in this expansion pack is a new race called The Au Ra, a new City-State - Ishgard, new Primals Bismarck and Ravana, and Flying Mounts
The same update says penalty points do not reverse a Service Account Termination. If Mog Station or support identifies a permanent termination, ordinary reactivation is not the same remedy as waiting for a subscription to expire.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does FFXIV say “No valid service account is available”?
That message does not by itself prove that an account or character was deleted. Square Enix identifies an inactive subscription and an incorrect or missing registered game copy as common causes. Suspension or a permanent ban is a less common possibility.
Work through Mog Station in this order
- Sign in to the original Square Enix Account. Confirm the email address and credentials used when the FFXIV character was created. Do not assume the launcher’s currently saved login is the correct one.
- Select the correct FFXIV service account. If more than one appears, open each one and compare its displayed status and character or platform information.
- Inspect subscription status. A lapsed subscription can prevent play without removing the service account. Check whether the account is merely inactive or explicitly terminated.
- Inspect registered licenses. Verify that the appropriate game copy is registered to that service account. Square Enix’s support guidance refers to the Starter Edition and Complete Edition as retail copies and directs players to verify license status in Mog Station.
- Check for a reactivation control. On the Service Account Status page, look for Reactivate Service Account. Its presence indicates that Mog Station recognizes a service account that can be reactivated under the agreement’s conditions.
- Contact Square Enix Support if the record is missing. Ask support to investigate the specific Square Enix Account and service account, especially if you see a termination notice, cannot locate a registered license, or believe the character data is missing.
Do not buy another game edition as a first-line account-recovery step. A new license registered to the wrong service account will not reveal characters stored elsewhere, and the support article’s license guidance is about verifying an existing registration.

What to do before taking a long break
A short preparation makes a later recovery less ambiguous:
- Record the Square Enix Account email and the service-account number shown in Mog Station, while keeping that information private.
- Note which platform and edition are registered to the service account.
- Cancel recurring billing separately if you only want to stop future charges; do not delete characters as a precaution.
- If you choose service-account deactivation, remember that it is reversible through the Service Account Status page while the game and data remain eligible.
- Keep access to the account’s email address and any security or authentication method needed to sign in.
Regional and policy limits
The cited support and policy pages are North America-facing Square Enix pages. Mog Station labels, regional support procedures, platform rules and edition availability can differ elsewhere. Account controls and terms can also change, so use the current wording displayed for your region when making a cancellation or reactivation decision.
The safest conclusion from Square Enix’s published rules is narrow: stopping payment or deactivating an FFXIV service account is not, by itself, a character-deletion request. Check which object changed, use Mog Station’s status and license screens, and reserve the word “deleted” for a confirmed character-removal or data-loss case.
