Naoki Hamaguchi reportedly argued inside Square Enix for a physical edition of FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, but the announced physical versions are not fully playable from the disc or card alone. Square Enix says PS5 and Xbox Series X|S copies require an internet download, while the Nintendo Switch 2 release is a Game-Key Card that downloads the game on first launch.
Did Naoki Hamaguchi personally ensure a physical release?
Not exactly. Reporting says the Final Fantasy VII Remake series director advocated for the option at Square Enix, citing fan demand and his own interest in physical media. Tech4Gamers, in an October 2, 2026 report based on a Radio Times interview, attributed this statement to Hamaguchi: “I used my position to put forth an argument for the physical version as much as possible.” Tech4Gamers’ report
That supports saying Hamaguchi pushed for a physical edition; it does not establish that he alone made or controlled Square Enix’s final decision. The announcement and store listings confirm that physical editions are planned.
Is the full game on the disc or card?
No. Square Enix’s North American PS5 listing says an internet connection is required to download additional game data before playing the physical version. The UK store specifies the same download requirement for Xbox Series X|S physical copies. Those listings do not state the final download size for PS5 or Xbox. Nintendo Switch 2
The physical edition is a Game-Key Card, not a cartridge containing the complete game. Square Enix says the game downloads when the card is first launched and requires at least 130 GB of available storage. That is a stated minimum free-space requirement, not a claim about the final download size. Square Enix UK store

What comes in the physical editions?
Edition contents vary by region. Square Enix’s North American store describes its Deluxe Edition as a physical game bundle with a soundtrack, artbook, and SteelBook. The UK store lists a Collector’s Edition with collectibles. Check the store for your region for the actual package contents; neither listing establishes that the same bundle is available everywhere.

GamingBolt reported on September 10, 2026 that Hamaguchi linked the download-enabled disc approach to avoiding compromises in fidelity and quality that would have been needed to fit the game within the selected disc capacity. That explanation is reported through a secondary account of his comments; Square Enix’s store pages provide the concrete platform requirements. GamingBolt’s report
