For gaming VOD reruns, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with -c copy only when the files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases and their duration metadata is reliable. If they need technical normalization or filtering, use the concat filter and re-encode. Neither approach guarantees an invisible edit: inspect and test the actual boundaries. Use -re to pace file input for a live stream; it does not fix gaps or glitches.
Choose the concat method that fits your VODs

FFmpeg describes the concat demuxer as suitable when you want to avoid a re-encode and your format does not support file-level concatenation. Its requirement is that “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” A shared .mp4 extension does not prove that files meet that requirement. Check your files before building the playlist
Probe each VOD and compare its video and audio streams, codecs, time bases, and duration. Also inspect the start and end of each segment: technical compatibility cannot remove a pause, abrupt camera move, or audio tail that is already in the recording. If your files are truncated or their duration metadata is questionable, do not assume FFmpeg’s calculated join point is exact.
The concat demuxer presents packets from listed files as one virtual input. It adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each following file starts where FFmpeg calculates the previous file ends. Those calculations use file durations; incorrect durations can cause artifacts, and streams within a file that are not exactly the same length can leave gaps. The documentation allows a playlist duration directive to override a stored duration, but use it only when you know a reliable corrected duration.

Join compatible files with the concat demuxer
- Create a playlist in playback order. Save a plain-text file named
playlist.ffconcat. For automatic format recognition, makeffconcat version 1.0the exact first line, with no leading space or byte-order mark. List one file per line:ffconcat version 1.0 file 'vod-part-01.mp4' file 'vod-part-02.mp4' - Handle paths carefully. The example assumes the files are in the working directory. For paths with spaces or special characters, follow FFmpeg’s concat playlist escaping rules.
-safe 0can permit paths outside the demuxer’s safe-path rules, but use it only with a playlist you control. - Write a joined file to validate the result.
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy joined.mp4This is an example pattern, not a guaranteed command for every set of inputs or live destination. Confirm that the container and streams are compatible, then inspect the output before sending it to YouTube.
- Review every boundary. Play across each join and check both picture and sound. If you hear silence, a click, or a pause—or see a freeze or timestamp jump—recheck stream compatibility and durations. Do not add guessed duration values simply to suppress a warning.
With -c copy, FFmpeg does not decode and re-encode the selected packets. That is why it is fast and avoids an encode generation, but also why it cannot apply filters or reconcile incompatible media. See FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation.
Use the concat filter when the segments need changes
If files differ in ways that require normalization, or you need filters, use the concat filter and re-encode rather than asking stream copy to repair them. FFmpeg’s FAQ identifies the filter for re-encoding workflows and the demuxer when avoiding a re-encode. The precise filter graph and output encoding settings depend on the source files and destination; the available documentation does not establish a universal set of codecs, bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or audio settings for this rerun scenario.

Re-encoding can make technical formats consistent, but it cannot make different gameplay moments, audio tails, or editorial cuts continuous. Match frame cadence, audio layout, and segment timing deliberately, then test the rendered joins. The source media and actual boundary content determine whether a transition feels seamless.
Send the joined media to a YouTube live stream
For file-based live output, -re reads input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1). It controls pacing when output packet speed matters, such as live streaming. It does not repair timestamps, correct duration metadata, make incompatible streams match, or smooth an edit. See FFmpeg’s input pacing documentation.

There is no single ingest command or set of output parameters established here for every encoder and YouTube account configuration. Before using a live endpoint, validate your media and configure output for your actual destination rather than treating the file-joining example above as a complete streaming command.
Why a concat can still have a gap
- Different stream layouts or codecs: the demuxer requires matching streams, codecs, and time bases. A matching filename extension is not enough; use a re-encoding workflow if the media must be normalized.
- Wrong or estimated duration: the demuxer uses each file’s duration to position the next one. Verify the media and use a playlist duration override only when you know the correct value.
- Unequal stream lengths: audio and video that end at different times can leave a gap after timestamp adjustment. Check both streams and the boundary in playback.
- A rough edit in the source: a technically valid join cannot remove a pause or discontinuity recorded at the end or start of a VOD. Review the content and edit the source if needed.
- Expecting
-reto fix continuity: it paces input; it does not change the media or its timestamps.
Use YouTube Live Redirect only for an end-of-stream handoff
YouTube Live Redirect is a Studio feature for sending viewers from an ending live stream to a Premiere or another live stream. It does not join VODs inside one stream or make a concat boundary seamless. YouTube’s instructions say, “Once your live stream ends, autoplay will move your viewers to the Premiere or live stream of your choice.” The Help page lists eligibility criteria for creators sending redirects; redirecting viewers to another channel’s live stream requires that channel’s permission.
