Choose FFmpeg if you want to build and operate the streaming setup yourself; choose a cloud service if you want prerecorded videos to keep playing without leaving your own computer or server in the streaming path. For YouTube’s specific 24/7 prerecorded use case, its encoder guidance lists Gyre as a cloud option and AJA HELO Plus with PlayToStream as dedicated hardware. StreamNeo is another YouTube-only cloud option: upload a video or playlist, add your stream key, and start the stream.
Which option fits your channel?
The key difference is who operates the playout. With FFmpeg, you manage the software, the machine or server running it, and ongoing monitoring. With a managed cloud service, the vendor runs prerecorded playout in its cloud environment. Dedicated hardware is a third path if you want a physical encoder that can schedule prerecorded media.

These options are not supported by a like-for-like price, uptime, or recovery comparison in the available product documentation. Treat those as questions to verify with each provider rather than assuming one approach is more reliable or less expensive.
What FFmpeg requires
FFmpeg is a software encoder: it sends a video stream to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. You remain responsible for the computer or server running the software and for watching the broadcast. The YouTube encoder workflow does not supply a ready-to-run FFmpeg command or a guaranteed method for looping a playlist, restarting after failure, or maintaining a 24/7 broadcast. Plan and test those parts for your own setup rather than treating a basic encoder launch as a complete continuous-streaming system.

Set up YouTube Live first
- In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s guide is titled Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- If this is your first time enabling live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for YouTube’s enablement process, according to that Help page.
- Keep the stream key private. It functions as a credential for sending a broadcast to your channel; do not publish it or place it somewhere other people can access.
- Configure FFmpeg or another encoder with YouTube’s server URL, stream key, and settings that match the media and connection you intend to use.
FFmpeg can also generate input streams for Google Cloud’s Live Stream API, but Google documents that API for live linear stream processing and transcoding. That does not make it a turnkey scheduled prerecorded YouTube channel service. See Before you begin and the Live Stream API overview.
Use settings YouTube recommends
YouTube’s encoder recommendations include H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; progressive scan; square pixels; and Rec. 709 for SDR. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Choose the stream quality to suit the upload capacity you can reliably maintain, not just the highest setting your source file supports. YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it. RTMPS carries RTMP through an SSL connection; Google describes the delivery approach in its RTMPS guide. Before the broadcast, test with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health while it runs.
Account for continuous operation and archives
A 24/7 stream makes the host and the encoder process part of the production system. Decide how you will detect a stopped process or lost connection, what should happen after a restart, and who will respond when monitoring shows a problem. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a particular FFmpeg restart strategy or guarantee the reliability of a given server arrangement.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that an uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will appear as one complete archive. If saved recordings matter, check YouTube’s current archive behavior and plan your programming and recording workflow accordingly.

Gyre and dedicated hardware
YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. That listing establishes the use case, not Gyre’s current pricing, content limits, scheduling controls, or recovery terms; verify those details directly before choosing it.

YouTube also describes AJA HELO Plus with PlayToStream as hardware that can schedule prerecorded media and stream it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a physical-encoder alternative, not an FFmpeg requirement. YouTube’s listing does not establish current price, stock, or every playlist and rotation behavior you may need.

- Choose FFmpeg if you want control over a self-managed software setup and are prepared to manage the host, configuration, monitoring, and recovery.
- Choose a cloud service if you want prerecorded playout handled away from your own computer. Compare actual scheduling controls, storage and content limits, monitoring, recovery, and current plan terms.
- Consider dedicated hardware if you prefer a physical encoder and its documented scheduling capabilities suit your channel.
Whichever route you use, test the complete path before relying on it: confirm the correct stream and key, inspect video and audio, check stream health, and establish what you will do if the broadcast stops. YouTube’s encoder help page puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Common problems and fixes
- You cannot start a first broadcast: If live streaming has only just been enabled, YouTube says the initial enablement can take up to 24 hours. Confirm the channel’s live-stream access before troubleshooting encoder settings.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the encoder has the correct server URL and stream key from the intended YouTube live stream. Keep the key private, and replace it if it has been exposed.
- The stream is unstable: Reduce the selected quality to one your upload connection can reliably sustain, then test again. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
- The picture or sound is not as expected: Test with representative motion and audio, and check codec, constant bitrate, keyframe interval, scan, pixel shape, and SDR color-space settings against YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- The stream stops and does not resume: In a self-managed FFmpeg setup, the operator is responsible for process monitoring and recovery; the cited YouTube pages do not prescribe a guaranteed restart method. For a cloud or hardware option, confirm its specific alerts and recovery behavior with the vendor.
- A long broadcast is missing or incomplete in archives: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not promise one complete archive for a longer uninterrupted broadcast.
