Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To stream a playlist of local video files to YouTube Live from Windows, use an encoder such as OBS Studio with its VLC Video Source, then connect the encoder to a YouTube stream using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. A regular YouTube playlist is different: it organizes videos already hosted on YouTube and does not itself create a live broadcast.
Choose the right kind of playlist
Local video files
If you want to broadcast a sequence of videos stored on your Windows PC, build and play that sequence in an encoder. OBS Project community guidance identifies OBS’s VLC Video Source as an option for playlists of local files when VLC is installed. The playlist-source details come from community guidance, and menus or compatibility can differ by installed versions.
Videos already on YouTube
A YouTube playlist is for organizing videos hosted on YouTube; it is not an input that YouTube Live can turn into a live feed. YouTube’s instructions for creating and managing playlists describe organizing videos, while the Live Control Room workflow connects a live encoder feed. Do not extract playback links from other creators’ videos to rebroadcast them. Only use media you have the rights and permissions to broadcast.
Check channel eligibility before setting up
- Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, according to YouTube’s computer livestream tips.
- YouTube’s general livestreaming guidance sets a minimum age of 16 to livestream.
- For a first livestream, enablement can take up to 24 hours. Set up ahead of the broadcast rather than assuming a new channel can go live immediately.
- Review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies for your content. Having a file does not establish that you have the right to broadcast it; obtain the necessary rights for music, game footage, or other material.

Set up a local-file playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. VLC is needed for the VLC Video Source approach. Download software from its official project sites and check the current source instructions for your installed versions.
- Create a scene in OBS. In the Sources area, add a VLC Video Source and configure the local files as a playlist. OBS community guidance discusses using this source for playlists; exact controls can vary by version.
- Set the playback order and behavior. Add the files in the order you want them broadcast and configure whether the list repeats, if the installed source offers that option. Confirm what happens at the end of the list before relying on it for an extended broadcast.
- Check picture and sound. Preview the scene and play through the files. Confirm the intended video is visible and the audio meters respond; check that audio is not muted or routed to an unintended device.
- Keep the media available. Do not move, rename, disconnect, or delete files while the playlist is in use. Internal storage is enough if it has space and remains available; an external SSD is optional, not a streaming requirement.
The playlist-source recommendation is based on OBS Project community guidance, not a guarantee that every version and setup behaves identically.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create a live stream or select the stream you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this connection process.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In the stream’s settings, copy both values for the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Enter them in OBS. Open OBS’s streaming settings, choose the appropriate YouTube service or custom server option, then enter the stream URL and key as required by the selected option. YouTube’s labels and OBS controls can change; follow the current screens in each app.
- Choose settings your connection can sustain. Pick a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that fit your source and reliable upload capacity. YouTube publishes supported encoder settings and bitrate guidance; use those current recommendations rather than assuming that a high download speed means adequate upload.
- Test before the real broadcast. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and connection. Leave about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate, as recommended in YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream health. An encoder sending video does not necessarily mean the event has been manually started for viewers; use the start controls shown in Live Control Room for your selected setup.
- Monitor the broadcast. Keep OBS open and watch for interruptions, missing audio, or an unhealthy connection. Keep the PC, local media, and internet connection available for the entire time this Windows-based workflow is broadcasting.
YouTube describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format to stream on YouTube. Its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide lists supported settings. For ordinary RTMP/RTMPS streaming, you do not need to configure HLS. YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements—including 1–4 second segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments—apply only if you deliberately choose HLS ingestion; that transport playlist is not your viewer-facing video playlist. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

Plan for the replay separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a longer uninterrupted broadcast being saved as one complete replay. If a replay matters, plan the broadcast duration around that limit and check YouTube’s current controls and archival behavior for your setup. See Manage live stream settings.
Common problems and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The playlist does not appear or play in OBS | VLC may not be installed, the source may not be configured with the intended files, or the installed versions may behave differently. | Confirm VLC is installed, recheck the VLC Video Source configuration, and test with a short local file before rebuilding the full playlist. Consult current OBS community guidance for version-specific details. |
| YouTube does not receive a signal | The stream URL or key may be missing, incorrect, or entered under the wrong encoder service setting. | Compare the OBS settings with the current stream details in Live Control Room. Keep the key private and reset it if compromised. |
| The preview is unstable or the stream health is poor | The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or other network use may be consuming capacity. | Test the upload connection, leave YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% headroom, reduce the encoder’s demand if needed, and check YouTube’s streaming tips. |
| Video appears but audio is missing | The source may have no audible track, or OBS audio may be muted or routed incorrectly. | Play the file locally, inspect OBS audio meters while it plays, and verify the intended audio source and output configuration before going live. |
| The live preview is visible, but viewers cannot watch | The encoder may be sending a feed while the event still awaits the start action in Live Control Room. | Check stream status and use the appropriate start control in Live Control Room for the event setup. |
| The playlist stops partway through | A file may have been moved or become unavailable, or playback may have reached the list’s end without repeating. | Keep source files in place and verify end-of-list behavior and repeat settings before the broadcast. |
Local PC or cloud playout?
With OBS on Windows, playback and encoding happen on your PC. You control the setup directly, but the PC, files, and local internet connection must remain available while it broadcasts. A cloud playout service instead runs the feed remotely; it may suit someone who cannot leave a PC on. Compare where playback runs, how playlist edits work, recovery behavior, monitoring, cost, and the control you need before choosing. YouTube’s encoder workflow covers the local connection method.
