FFmpeg gives you control but leaves hosting, monitoring and recovery to you. A managed service can take over the encoder work; check that it supports looping and automatic recovery before relying on it. YouTube’s workflow in either case uses a stream URL and a private stream key.
What “without a PC” means
YouTube receives live audio and video from an encoder. If your computer is off, that encoder still has to run somewhere: on a continuously available host you operate, or in a managed service. YouTube documents 24/7 feeds as a use case, but that does not mean YouTube runs the encoder or guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.
A broadcast and its incoming stream connection are separate YouTube objects. The encoder sends content through the stream; a broadcast is the event viewers watch. For a scheduled broadcast, connecting the encoder is not necessarily the same as making the broadcast live: follow YouTube Studio’s preview and Go live steps.
Choose between FFmpeg and a managed service

Use FFmpeg if you can provision an always-online host and are prepared to maintain the stream. A managed option is more suitable when you want the encoder and its operation off your hands, but “managed” is not itself proof of looping, monitoring, recovery, or a particular uptime. Verify those details before choosing.

Set up YouTube’s stream connection
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the stream or scheduled broadcast you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup uses both values. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it, include it in public logs, or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Choose the ingest protocol. RTMPS is the ordinary route for user content. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions specify an
rtmpsscheme, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and path, and port 443. For HDR or a codec unsupported by RTMP, YouTube documents HLS as an option when the encoder supports it. - Enter the connection details in your encoder. Paste the URL and key into the appropriate fields or construct the output URL according to the encoder’s instructions. Keep the key private in scripts, configuration files, and any service dashboard.
- Start sending content and check Studio. YouTube creates the watch page once the encoder begins sending. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the stream preview and use the Studio Go live action when appropriate; the encoder connection and the broadcast’s live state are distinct.
Run a prerecorded loop with FFmpeg
FFmpeg can send media over a network, but the command depends on the source file, codecs, chosen protocol, and YouTube’s current ingest details. The documentation reviewed establishes that FFmpeg supports network streaming; it does not establish a universal command that works for every file or configuration. Use FFmpeg’s own documentation and the current YouTube encoder settings to build and test the output. Do not treat a sample command copied from elsewhere as a substitute for matching your file’s streams and the selected ingest protocol.
Prepare the host and media
- Arrange a host that remains online for the full intended schedule; a process running on a computer that is shut down cannot continue transmitting.
- Place the video on that host and ensure you have the rights and permissions needed to stream its audio and video.
- Confirm the file’s audio and video streams and choose output settings compatible with YouTube and your ingest method.
- Configure the media to repeat using an FFmpeg approach suitable for the file and version in use. Test the transition at the end of the file so that looping does not create an unintended gap or stop the process.
Keep it operating
Run the encoder under a process supervisor or equivalent mechanism you administer, and arrange monitoring that can detect both process failure and loss of YouTube ingestion. FFmpeg documentation describes an I/O-error option relevant to long-duration network output, but an option for handling I/O errors is not an uptime guarantee and does not replace supervision. YouTube’s API exposes stream status and health information, including configuration issues, which can help diagnose problems.

For a genuinely unattended stream, decide in advance who or what will notice a failed process, a dropped connection, an exhausted host, or an expired/changed key, and how it will be restarted safely. FFmpeg does not automatically provide a complete monitoring and recovery service just because it can stream.
RTMPS or HLS?
Use RTMPS for ordinary YouTube user content unless your codec or HDR workflow requires HLS and your encoder supports it. YouTube describes HLS as segmented delivery with higher latency than RTMP. Its HLS guidance calls for TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. These are HLS-specific requirements, not settings to apply to an RTMPS stream.

Copyright, reused material, and archives
Only stream material you are authorized to use. A prerecorded video being transmitted as a live feed does not make its music, footage, gameplay, or other material yours. Check licenses and permissions for the full recording, including background music and third-party clips, before starting; a copyright claim or restriction can interrupt availability or affect the channel.
Also distinguish permission to stream from YouTube monetization eligibility. Reused or repetitive material may raise separate policy concerns; do not assume that changing a prerecorded upload into a live broadcast resolves them. Review YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content rather than relying on the encoder to determine compliance.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not support promising an archive for streams of 12 hours or longer. If keeping a replay matters, plan a separate recording and verify the resulting archive in Studio.
