For most creators who want to loop several local video files with minimal command-line work, OBS is the easier starting point: add a VLC Video source, select the playlist files, and enable Loop Playlist. Choose FFmpeg if you are comfortable building and maintaining commands and need a scriptable workflow. Neither choice has an established India-specific advantage; your computer, upload connection, YouTube account eligibility, and content rights matter more than your location.
This comparison is about sending a playlist from your own computer to YouTube Live. If you want the stream to keep running without leaving a computer on at home, see the cloud option below.
OBS vs FFmpeg: the practical differences
| Decision | OBS | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Playlist setup | Use the VLC Video source to select multiple files and loop the playlist. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default. | Configure a concatenation method and command options. The right method depends on the files and whether you need to re-encode. |
| Control and automation | A graphical application is practical for arranging sources and scenes. | Commands are practical for repeatable, scriptable operation if you can maintain them. This is a workflow distinction, not a performance benchmark. |
| YouTube ingest | YouTube lists OBS among encoders supporting HLS output. Check the protocol and settings selected in Live Control Room. | Confirm that the chosen FFmpeg output matches the protocol and settings selected in Live Control Room. |
| Reliability | Depends on the host computer, media, upload connection, and monitoring. No comparative reliability test establishes an advantage. | Depends on the same factors. No comparative reliability test establishes an advantage. |
OBS’s playlist instructions are in the OBS Media Sources documentation. FFmpeg’s official FAQ explains its concatenation options.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. The OBS VLC Video source depends on VLC. Match the architecture: OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose VLC Video Source. Add the local video files to its playlist and arrange them in the order you want them played.
- Check looping and playback. Confirm that Loop Playlist is enabled (OBS documents it as on by default). Start playback and verify that each file plays in the intended order and that playback returns to the beginning after the final file.
- Configure the YouTube output. In YouTube Live Control Room, verify the stream key and selected ingest protocol, then configure OBS to use the corresponding output settings. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Preview before going live. Check the incoming feed in Live Control Room before starting the public stream. Watch the preview and monitor the stream after it begins.
For a single local file rather than a multi-file playlist, OBS’s Media Source has its own Loop property. The VLC Video source is the documented choice for a playlist of multiple files.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build a playlist workflow with FFmpeg
FFmpeg does not have one universal playlist command that is right for every set of files. First check whether the files have compatible stream parameters, then choose the concatenation method based on whether preserving the existing encoded streams or re-encoding is the priority.
- Inspect the media. Establish whether the files’ streams and parameters are compatible for the concatenation method you intend to use. Do not assume files that look alike have matching encoding properties.
- Choose a concat approach. FFmpeg’s official FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. It describes the concat demuxer as an option that can avoid re-encoding in suitable situations.
- Configure the output for YouTube. Match the output protocol and settings to what you selected in Live Control Room. Test the playlist and output before relying on it for a long stream.
- Keep the command and files manageable. Use a repeatable file list and confirm that the transition from the last item back to the first behaves as intended. The exact command depends on your media and output requirements; follow the method documented in the FFmpeg FAQ rather than applying a generic command to incompatible files.
Check YouTube ingest, bandwidth, and eligibility
The encoder choice does not change YouTube’s requirements. Confirm the protocol and stream key in Live Control Room, and verify that your channel is eligible to stream: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. See Get started with live streaming.

If you select HLS
YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies MPEG-TS segments that are 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and supported codecs. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. It lists OBS among encoders supporting HLS output, but you should confirm your actual protocol and settings in Live Control Room. Read YouTube’s HLS setup guidance before configuring an HLS output.
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends that total stream bitrate use no more than 80% of your available upload bandwidth—leaving 20% headroom. Check your connection under conditions similar to the planned stream, then preview and continuously monitor the feed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Plan for monitoring and long streams
With either program, the stream depends on the computer running it, the media being available, and a working upload connection. Preview the feed before going live and monitor it while it runs; a playlist that loops correctly on the desktop is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If keeping a replay matters, YouTube recommends a local recording backup. Plan for recording or restarting rather than treating a long-running live feed as a guaranteed archive. Details are in YouTube’s archive guidance.

Rights apply to every item in the playlist
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to stream the video and audio, including music. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and check rights for every item before broadcasting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream rather than operating an encoder on your own computer, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live from the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
