To show subtitles during a 24/7 YouTube stream, send captions to YouTube as either embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 data or a separate feed from supported caption software. An SRT file uploaded to a regular video is not a live caption feed. You also need a separate plan for captions on the replay: live automatic captions do not remain on the archived stream.
Choose a live caption route
YouTube documents two ways to deliver captions during a live stream. Pick the one your production setup can support, then test it in the live player.
| Route | What sends the captions | Best fit | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Embedded 608/708 | Your encoder or production chain embeds EIA-608/CEA-708 captions in the video signal. | A setup that can generate compatible embedded captions. | YouTube’s documented setup supports one caption track, even though the 608/708 standard supports up to four language tracks. |
| Caption software over HTTP POST | Supported captioning software or a captioner sends a separate feed to YouTube’s caption ingestion URL. | A production with a compatible captioning system or professional captioner. | The documented event workflow requires a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay, and only one caption feed is allowed per stream entry point. |
YouTube names Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as supported software on its live caption requirements page. Check that the current software version and your encoder support the chosen workflow before building it into a continuous broadcast.
Set up embedded 608/708 captions
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and open its setup or settings area.
- Turn on closed captions and select Embedded 608/708 as the caption source.
- Configure the encoder or production chain to generate EIA-608/CEA-708 captions. Depending on your setup, captions may be read from a supported file format or generated in real time; confirm the exact workflow in the encoder’s documentation.
- Save the stream settings, start a test broadcast, and check that captions appear in the live player. Verify the language, timing, and continuity rather than relying only on the encoder’s status indicator.
YouTube’s documented embedded setup supports one caption track. If viewers need multiple languages, confirm what the current YouTube interface and your caption workflow allow before relying on a single embedded feed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up a separate caption feed
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s setup and enable closed captions.
- Choose the caption-software workflow and obtain the caption ingestion URL provided for the stream.
- Give that URL to the compatible captioning software or captioner, then configure it to send captions to YouTube over HTTP POST.
- For the documented event workflow, configure a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. Check that the video, audio, and caption timing stay aligned.
- Start a test and confirm that captions appear in the live player. A stream entry point accepts one caption feed, so plan how the feed will stay active through any encoder restart or stream interruption.
For current software and version requirements, consult YouTube’s live caption instructions and the caption vendor’s support documentation. A product name on YouTube’s list does not by itself confirm that every current release or configuration is compatible.
What automatic captions do—and do not do
YouTube’s documented automatic live-caption rollout is English-only and applies to qualifying normal-latency streams when professional captions are unavailable. Availability depends on stream eligibility and current YouTube settings, so check the options shown for your stream in Live Control Room.

Live automatic captions do not remain on the archived video. YouTube generates captions separately for the video-on-demand (VOD) replay after the stream, and those captions may differ from what viewers saw live. For a published replay, inspect the subtitle track and edit it in YouTube Studio if needed. YouTube describes that post-stream workflow separately from live caption delivery in its subtitles help page.
Plan for captions across a 24/7 broadcast
A continuous stream needs more than a one-time setup. YouTube says a stream entry point has one caption feed and recommends continuously monitoring audio and video quality for encoder streams. Include caption presence and synchronization in your operational checks, especially after restarts or failovers.

- Keep the caption source running: Decide who or what will supply captions continuously, and what happens when that source or the encoder reconnects.
- Monitor the viewer experience: Check the actual live player for missing, delayed, or out-of-sync captions; do not treat a successful connection alone as proof viewers can see them.
- Handle replays separately: Review the VOD subtitle track after each published stream session if accurate replay captions matter.
- Account for archive limits: YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete automatic archive; plan stream sessions and replay handling separately.
YouTube’s guidance for continuous encoder streams, including the archive limit and the use of a stream URL and stream key, is in its encoder streaming guide. The guide identifies Gyre as a cloud-based option for streaming prerecorded videos 24/7; it does not establish that Gyre provides or supports captions. Captioning must still be planned and verified as its own part of the workflow.
Troubleshoot missing or unreliable captions
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No captions appear in the live player. | The source is enabled in only one part of the setup, or the caption feed is not reaching YouTube. | Confirm the selected caption source in Live Control Room and verify that the encoder is embedding captions or the software is sending to the correct caption ingestion URL. |
| Captions are late or out of sync. | Video delay and caption timing do not match. | For the software workflow, check the required 30- or 60-second broadcast delay and test audio, video, and caption alignment together. |
| Captions disappear after a reconnect. | The caption source did not resume, or the feed was not re-established. | Check the caption source after the encoder or stream reconnects, then verify the feed in the live player. |
| There are no live captions in a language other than English. | The stream may not qualify for YouTube’s documented automatic-caption rollout, which is English-only. | Use a compatible professional or embedded-caption workflow for the required language and confirm the available options in the current interface. |
| The replay has no captions, or its captions differ from the live stream. | Live captions are not retained on the archive; VOD captions are generated separately. | Inspect the replay’s subtitle track in YouTube Studio and edit it if needed. |
| A 24-hour broadcast does not appear as one complete archive. | YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. | Plan stream sessions and separate replay handling rather than assuming the full continuous broadcast will be archived as one video. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo can handle the continuous stream while you keep captions as a separate production requirement to configure and verify. The setup is three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
