FFmpeg Won’t Reconnect to YouTube Live After a Network Drop? Fix the Output Recovery

FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options are not a general RTMP(S) output fix. Use the documented FIFO recovery pattern for temporary failures, verify YouTube’s endpoint and key, and distinguish a running process from one that has exited.

FFmpeg’s HTTP -reconnect options are not a general reconnect switch for an RTMP or RTMPS publishing output. For temporary RTMP output failures, FFmpeg documents recovery through the FIFO muxer, using -attempt_recovery 1 and -recovery_wait_time 1. A looping input and a recovered publishing connection are separate things: looping a video does not, by itself, reconnect the output.

The right fix depends on whether FFmpeg is still running, what failed, and whether YouTube accepts the next connection. The command below is an adaptation of FFmpeg’s documented example, not a guarantee that every network drop or YouTube live-event state will recover.

Why -reconnect may not fix a YouTube Live output

FFmpeg documents reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and related options in its HTTP protocol documentation. Those options concern HTTP connections and streams. They should not be treated as a universal reconnect control for a separate RTMP or RTMPS output.

If your input is an HTTP stream, HTTP reconnect options may help with that input, depending on option placement and your installed FFmpeg build. They do not establish that the RTMP(S) publishing leg can reconnect. An input loop likewise restarts or repeats what FFmpeg reads; it does not restore a failed output connection.

Use FFmpeg’s documented FIFO recovery pattern for temporary output failures

FFmpeg’s Muxers Documentation includes an RTMP example that continues processing in real time during a temporary network failure and attempts recovery every second indefinitely. Its relevant output-side options are -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac
  -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
  -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a
  rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name

This is an illustrative documentation example. Replace INPUT, stream maps, codecs, and the placeholder destination with the values for your setup. Use the current ingest endpoint from YouTube Live Control Room, and keep the stream key private. Check that your FFmpeg build supports the options before relying on them.

The documented “indefinitely” describes repeated recovery attempts in the example, not a guarantee that YouTube will accept every reconnect or preserve the same live-event state. The example also sets -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1; dropping packets when the FIFO overflows is a trade-off to consider during a longer outage, not a way to guarantee lossless recovery.

Check the YouTube RTMPS endpoint and stream key

YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key from the settings for the stream you are publishing. Confirm the URL’s protocol and that your encoder supports RTMPS; do not substitute FFmpeg’s example address for YouTube’s actual ingest endpoint. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

  • If YouTube reports an SSL error, check that the protocol and server are correct and use an rtmps URL. YouTube advises specifying port 443 when troubleshooting an SSL error if the URL is otherwise correct.
  • For a connection timeout, check the server URL and protocol, and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS.
  • Treat the stream key like a password. Redact it before sharing commands, logs, screenshots, or service configuration.

Diagnose the failure before changing the command

  1. Save the evidence. Record the full command with the stream key redacted, the FFmpeg version/build information, and log lines immediately before and after the drop. Note whether FFmpeg kept running, reported an output or muxer error, or exited.
  2. Check YouTube’s stream status. Compare FFmpeg’s log and process state with the stream status and preview in Live Control Room. This can help distinguish an encoder-side failure from a connection or ingest-side problem.
  3. Identify which leg stopped. Check whether the source input ended, the encoder or muxer failed, or the output connection dropped. A repeating input is not evidence that the output recovered.
  4. Apply output recovery if appropriate. Adapt the FIFO example to your existing input, stream maps, codecs, and YouTube endpoint. Verify the options against the documentation or help for the FFmpeg build actually running.
  5. Test deliberately. After correcting the likely issue, test recovery during a controlled interruption and observe both the FFmpeg process and YouTube’s stream status before relying on it for a critical broadcast.

When FFmpeg exits, recovery needs another layer

FIFO muxer recovery operates while FFmpeg is running. If the process has exited, a process supervisor or service manager is needed to relaunch it if automatic restart is desired. Restarting the process will not fix an invalid key, incorrect endpoint, unsupported transport, or persistent network fault; diagnose those causes separately. The relevant FFmpeg command-line behavior is covered in the FFmpeg documentation, which treats output destinations as URLs.

Common symptoms and fixes

Symptom What to check Practical next step
-reconnect is present, but publishing does not resume Whether the option is an HTTP protocol option while the failed output is RTMP(S) Use the documented FIFO output-recovery pattern where appropriate; do not assume HTTP options repair the publishing leg.
The video loops, but the live stream stays disconnected Whether the input loop is being confused with output recovery Diagnose the output connection separately and verify FFmpeg’s process and muxer state.
FFmpeg reports an SSL error with RTMPS Protocol, server URL, and port configuration Confirm the current YouTube RTMPS URL and encoder support; YouTube advises port 443 for troubleshooting an SSL error when the URL is otherwise correct.
Connection times out Ingest URL, protocol, and RTMPS support Re-copy the URL from Live Control Room and confirm encoder support for RTMPS.
FFmpeg is no longer running Whether the process exited rather than remaining active for muxer recovery attempts Inspect the exit log and use process supervision if automatic relaunch is required, after addressing any configuration or network fault.
Recovery attempts continue but YouTube does not resume the live stream FFmpeg logs alongside YouTube’s Live Control Room status and preview Verify the endpoint and key, then test the setup under a controlled interruption. Reconnect attempts do not guarantee YouTube acceptance or preservation of the live-event state.
