How to Stream a Looping Video to YouTube Live from Google Drive

Google Drive stores the recording; OBS sends it to YouTube Live. Learn how to download, loop, configure, test, and troubleshoot the stream.

Google Drive stores the video; it does not send it to YouTube Live. Download the recording to the computer running OBS, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, then connect OBS to a YouTube stream using its stream URL and stream key. Test the preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast.

1. Make the Google Drive video available to OBS

  1. In Google Drive, locate the video and download it to the computer that will run OBS. The file owner’s sharing settings, organizational policies, or download restrictions may prevent downloading; confirm you have permission to obtain the actual file. Google’s instructions are at Download a file.
  2. If you already have the video locally, use that copy. Check that it plays and that its picture and audio are the versions you intend to broadcast.

OBS’s Media Source plays a local file, so the outgoing stream comes from OBS—not from a Drive preview or Drive link. Common supported video formats include MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

2. Create or select the YouTube Live stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room and create a stream. If you are preparing an event in advance, create or select its scheduled stream and use the encoder details associated with that event.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.

YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that before a scheduled broadcast. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions if the labels or workflow differ in your account.

3. Add the video to OBS and enable looping

  1. Open OBS and select or create the scene that should show the recording.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source, give the source a name, and confirm.
  3. In the Media Source properties, select Browse and choose the downloaded video file.
  4. Check Loop, then select OK. When playback reaches the end, OBS will play the file again.
  5. Check the OBS preview. Resize or position the source if needed, and play it long enough to verify that the intended audio is present.

The loop setting repeats one file. OBS documents a separate VLC Video source for a playlist of multiple files; install VLC for that source to be available, add the files to the playlist, and use its Loop Playlist control. OBS describes VLC Video as allowing “a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” Test the playlist and transitions with your chosen files; seamless loop boundaries are not guaranteed for every video or audio track.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube and set stream output

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service if it is available, then connect your account or enter the stream key as the interface offers.
  2. If using a custom server connection, copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room into the corresponding OBS fields. Do not share or publish the key.
  3. In OBS output settings, choose a bitrate your internet connection can sustain consistently. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its H.264 guidance lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps, and 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can maintain them.
  4. Use constant bitrate (CBR), set the keyframe interval to two seconds (YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds), and choose a frame rate no higher than 60 fps. For stereo audio, YouTube’s documented recommendation is a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps.

Match the OBS output resolution and frame rate to the source and the upload connection you can sustain. YouTube transcodes incoming video for different viewer formats. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance before a high-stakes stream, since recommendations can change.

5. Test, start, and end the broadcast

  1. Start streaming in OBS and wait for the video to appear in YouTube Live Control Room’s preview.
  2. Check that the preview has both picture and sound, then review YouTube’s stream health and any warnings. Test with sound and movement similar to the actual broadcast, and monitor health messages while live.
  3. For a scheduled stream, select Go live in Live Control Room when ready. Starting the OBS encoder alone may not start the scheduled event for viewers.
  4. When finished, stop the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive outcome for longer broadcasts.

Keep the broadcast eligible and authorized

Only stream video and audio that you are entitled to broadcast. A file being available in Drive does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Copyright claims or other YouTube policy issues can affect a live stream or its availability. Review the rights for all included music, footage, and other material before going live.

A YouTube Live broadcast is not automatically a substitute for a monetizable original video. Reused-content monetization decisions are separate from this OBS setup and depend on YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and the content’s originality and added value. Check YouTube’s rules for your channel rather than assuming that looping or owning a copy of a file makes it eligible.

Troubleshooting

  • The video will not open in OBS: confirm the Drive download completed, the file plays locally, and OBS is pointed to the correct path. If the file is inaccessible under Drive’s sharing or organizational settings, ask its owner for permitted access; there is no universal workaround for restricted downloads.
  • The video plays once and stops: open the Media Source properties and check Loop. For multiple files, confirm the VLC Video source is available, VLC is installed, and Loop Playlist is enabled.
  • YouTube does not show the stream: verify that OBS is streaming, the service or server URL is correct, and the stream key matches the stream selected in Live Control Room. Treat the key as private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
  • The preview buffers or reports poor health: reduce OBS bitrate or output resolution, use a stable wired connection if available, and test again. Do not exceed the upload capacity you can sustain consistently; YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrate is not a measure of your connection’s capacity.
  • There is no sound or the loop transition is rough: check the source’s audio in OBS and test the end-to-start transition. OBS does not promise gap-free boundaries for every media file, so a small pause or audible discontinuity may depend on the particular file.
  • You cannot start a first-ever YouTube stream: first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Complete activation ahead of the event rather than waiting until broadcast time.
  • A long stream is not archived as expected: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition covers streams under 12 hours, not every longer broadcast. Plan separate recording or archiving if you need a copy.
