For a constant 60 fps YouTube Live stream, target a 2-second keyframe interval: 120 frames. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds; at 60 fps, that ceiling is 240 frames. For FFmpeg with libx264, -g 120 sets a maximum GOP size of 120 frames. YouTube also says a closed GOP is required for optimal transcoding, so verify the behavior of your chosen encoder rather than assuming the frame-count option alone configures GOP structure.
Why the 60fps setting is 120 frames
YouTube specifies keyframe frequency in seconds: 2 seconds recommended, with a 4-second maximum. A GOP-size option such as FFmpeg’s -g is expressed in frames. At a constant output rate of 60 frames per second:
- 2 seconds × 60 fps = 120 frames (recommended target).
- 4 seconds × 60 fps = 240 frames (YouTube’s stated ceiling, not the target).
That is why a 60 fps stream generally uses 120 rather than 60 for a two-second GOP. YouTube publishes the interval guidance in its live encoder settings.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0 ... OUTPUT
-g 120 sets libx264’s maximum GOP size to 120 frames. -keyint_min 120 sets the minimum interval, while -sc_threshold 0 disables scene-cut keyframe insertion that could otherwise interrupt a regular cadence. FFmpeg documents these controls in its codec documentation.
This is not a complete YouTube streaming command: the ellipsis stands for other choices you still need to configure, including output destination, rate control, audio and pixel format. It communicates the GOP intent, not a tested end-to-end setup. Confirm that your FFmpeg build is actually using libx264 and check the resulting stream; other encoders may expose different options or behavior.

Use time-based forced keyframes as an alternative
FFmpeg also supports forcing keyframes on a time cadence:
-force_key_frames 'expr:gte(t,n_forced*2)'
This expression requests a keyframe every two seconds. FFmpeg’s documentation explains that requested times are rounded to the nearest output timestamp and the first frame at or after the computed time is used. Frame timestamps and encoder time base therefore affect where forced keyframes land. This option is an alternative way to express timing; by itself, it does not establish a fixed GOP or guarantee closed-GOP structure. See FFmpeg’s command documentation.

Check the rest of the YouTube ingest settings
Keyframe interval is only one part of a valid stream configuration. YouTube’s guidance covers codec, frame rate, rate control and other encoder settings separately. Its current guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, and recommends RTMPS. For H.264, its recommended bitrates at 60 fps are:
| Output resolution | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate at 60 fps |
|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps |
YouTube’s advanced settings also recommend progressive scan and two B-frames. Match bitrate to resolution and codec rather than treating it as part of the keyframe setting. Check YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the platform’s current recommendations.

Verify the GOP and stream health
- Confirm output frame rate. The 120-frame calculation assumes a constant 60 fps output. Variable-frame-rate input, frame drops, resampling or a different output rate can change how frame counts relate to elapsed time. Configure and verify the output cadence for the actual command.
- Check closed-GOP behavior. YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding in its live streaming error guidance. Do not assume that
-g, or the same flag on every encoder, enables closed GOP; verify the selected encoder’s documented options and the produced stream. - Inspect actual output. A configured interval is not proof that the encoded stream has the intended cadence or structure. YouTube warns that ingestion errors can cause incorrectly reported GOP sizes. Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room and test with representative movement and audio.
Troubleshooting common keyframe problems
- GOP appears to be 60 frames. At 60 fps that is only one second. If you intended YouTube’s two-second target, use 120 frames for the maximum GOP with libx264 and confirm the output frame rate.
- Keyframes arrive irregularly. Scene-cut insertion, variable timestamps, a changing output frame rate or encoder-specific behavior may affect cadence. For libx264,
-keyint_min 120and-sc_threshold 0can help target a regular interval; inspect the encoded output rather than presuming the options worked as intended. - YouTube reports an unexpected GOP size. The report may be affected by ingestion errors. Review Live Control Room stream health, confirm the stream’s actual cadence and test again with representative content.
- The stream fails optimal transcoding checks. Check whether the selected encoder is producing a closed GOP. The frame interval and GOP structure are related but distinct requirements.
- The forced-keyframe expression does not land exactly on two-second boundaries. FFmpeg schedules forced frames against output timestamps and time base; rounding can shift the actual frame. Inspect the output and adjust the real command’s cadence and time-base choices as needed.
