You can stream a radio playlist to YouTube Live with GStreamer by playing each item, queueing the next URI before the current track ends, encoding and muxing the output, then sending it to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The dependable approach is an application that manages the playlist and GStreamer pipeline; the exact encoder, sink, and settings depend on your installed GStreamer plugins and YouTube’s current ingest details.
How the stream fits together
A playlist stream has four jobs: choose and play tracks, move between them, encode the resulting audio, and deliver it continuously to YouTube. A typical GStreamer design uses playbin to open each media URI, an output chain for conversion and encoding, an FLV muxer, and an RTMP sink. The chain’s precise elements and caps depend on the formats you have installed and the destination requirements; the components described here are not a universally tested, copy-paste pipeline.
Use RTMP or RTMPS for the straightforward continuous-streaming workflow. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, so use the secure ingest URL YouTube supplies when available. Do not rely on an ingest URL copied from an old guide: fetch the current URL and key from Live Control Room.
Check your GStreamer installation
Install GStreamer core plus the playback, media-format, codec, muxing, and RTMP plugins required by your files and chosen output chain. Plugin availability varies by operating system and GStreamer release, so inspect the actual installation rather than assuming a named element exists.

- Run
gst-inspect-1.0 playbinto check that the playback element is available. - Inspect candidate encoders and muxers with
gst-inspect-1.0followed by the element name. Check the formats, pads, and properties supported by your local build. - Check for
rtmp2sinkwithgst-inspect-1.0 rtmp2sink. It is documented as part of GStreamer Bad Plug-ins; the plugin package may need to be installed separately. - Choose an encoder and output caps compatible with your media and YouTube’s current ingest requirements. Confirm that the selected elements can link together before deploying the application.
GStreamer’s element and playback references describe playbin and the rtmp2sink output element. Your local plugin inspection is the authority on what is available on your machine.
Build playlist playback without track-boundary gaps
Use absolute URIs
playbin takes a URI, not a relative file path. Convert local filenames to absolute file URIs and use valid network URIs for remote items. Keep the ordered playlist in application state so the player can determine what comes next.

Queue the next item before the current one ends
Connect your application to playbin’s about-to-finish signal and set the next URI while the current item is still playing. GStreamer documents this as the mechanism for gapless-style queuing. The signal is emitted on a streaming thread, so keep its callback small. If playlist selection, I/O, or other complex work is needed, arrange it safely outside the callback and protect shared queue state against concurrent access.
This improves continuity but cannot promise a silent boundary for every file. The next item must be buffered early enough, and compressed formats can introduce codec delay or frame-size complications. If you instead wait for end-of-stream (EOS) and restart playback, a boundary gap is possible. In that design, make sure the output connection remains in the state you intend while playback restarts.

Connect the output to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and retrieve its current ingest URL and stream key. YouTube’s live resource describes ingestion type and primary and backup endpoints as delivery configuration; use the details for your current stream rather than hard-coding an endpoint from another source.
- Store the URL and key in protected runtime configuration, such as a secret store or a file with appropriately restricted access. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it in source code, logs, screenshots, or a public example.
- Construct the GStreamer output chain for your selected encoder and format, mux the encoded output into FLV, and connect the muxer to
rtmp2sinkusing the current destination details. Verify element properties and caps against your local plugins and YouTube’s current requirements. - Start the scheduled or live broadcast in Live Control Room, start your GStreamer application, and check the stream’s health there. Also verify playback from a viewer’s perspective.
The YouTube Live Streams resource covers stream delivery configuration. GStreamer reports playback errors and state changes on its bus; monitor those messages in your application rather than treating a running process as proof that the stream is healthy.
RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?
| Ingest option | When it fits | Practical considerations |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | A standard continuous live-encoder workflow. | Use the URL and key shown in Live Control Room. RTMPS encrypts the connection. |
| HLS | You specifically need YouTube HLS ingestion or a supported codec or feature that calls for it. | It requires segment and rolling-playlist handling and has higher latency than RTMP. YouTube specifies TS segments 1–4 seconds long, no more than five outstanding playlist segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. The developer guide also specifies M2TS and codec constraints. |
Unless you have a concrete HLS requirement, RTMP/RTMPS is the more direct fit for this playlist-to-live setup. Check YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements and HLS ingestion developer guide before implementing HLS; its segment rules are part of the protocol, not optional tuning advice.

Clear music rights before going live
A technically valid stream is not necessarily authorized. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content, and a track described as “free” or bought from another source is not automatically cleared for your intended use. The license must cover live streaming on YouTube.
Even when you have permission, a live broadcast may be interrupted if the rights owner uses Content ID and your channel is not on its allowlist. Confirm the license scope with the rights owner and, where applicable, ask them to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist. YouTube explains that it may not know whether you acquired rights elsewhere and recommends checking the actual license. See its guidance on copyright issues with live streams and copyright-safe music. Test with authorized material before a public broadcast.

Monitor and troubleshoot the stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| GStreamer cannot create an element | The needed plugin is missing or unavailable in this installation. | Run gst-inspect-1.0 for the element. Install the appropriate plugin package for your operating system and release, then inspect again. |
| A local track will not open | The player received a relative path or invalid URI. | Provide an absolute file URI and check the file’s accessibility and media-format plugin support. |
| The stream fails to connect | The URL or key may be stale or incorrect, or the selected sink may not be configured for the installed plugin. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the sink’s local properties with gst-inspect-1.0 rtmp2sink, and inspect GStreamer bus errors. |
| The broadcast connects but YouTube reports a problem | The selected encoder, caps, or muxed output may not match the ingest requirements. | Review the encoder and caps supported by the installed elements and the current YouTube ingest guidance; use Live Control Room health status and viewer-side playback to verify. |
| There is a pause between songs | The next URI was not queued early enough, or buffering and codec characteristics prevent a seamless boundary. | Queue the next URI through about-to-finish, keep callback work minimal, and test the actual playlist’s transitions. EOS-driven restart may introduce a gap. |
| The live stream is interrupted over music | Content ID may identify a track, or the channel may not be allowlisted despite permission. | Stop using material until its live-stream license is confirmed; contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where relevant. |
GStreamer and YouTube health checks provide different evidence: use the GStreamer bus for local pipeline errors, Live Control Room for ingest health, and an actual viewer playback check for the delivered result.
