FFmpeg YouTube Live Loop Fails with “Invalid data found”: How to Fix It

FFmpeg’s invalid-data error has several possible causes. Find the failing input, inspect it with ffprobe, and troubleshoot files, URLs, or concat lists before changing stream settings.

FFmpeg’s “Invalid data found when processing input” message means it could not process data as expected; it does not identify one specific cause. Check the exact input named in your command with ffprobe, then investigate the input path, file or URL, or concat list before changing your YouTube output settings. Without the command and full log, the particular fault cannot be determined.

What the error means—and what it does not

FFmpeg’s 8.0 error reference labels this message AVERROR_INVALIDDATA and describes it as “Invalid data found when processing input.” The label tells you that FFmpeg encountered data it could not process; it does not prove that a video file is corrupt. The input could be a damaged or incomplete media file, a URL returning non-media content, an unsupported container, or a problem with a concat list or input arrangement.

First establish where the failure occurs. An error while opening an input is different from a failure later while reading or processing its streams, and neither by itself proves that YouTube rejected the outgoing stream. Keep the complete command and log: the input immediately before the error and the point at which it occurs are key clues.

Diagnose the input in order

  1. Find the failing input. Read the full command and log, note every -i input, and identify which one FFmpeg names immediately before the error. Record whether the error occurs as FFmpeg starts or only after the stream has been running.
  2. Probe that exact input. Run ffprobe -hide_banner -i INPUT, replacing INPUT with the same local path or URL used by FFmpeg. Check whether the output identifies a container, duration, and streams. A filename extension does not establish what the file contains; a valid media file can sometimes be readable despite a mismatched extension.
  3. If the probe cannot identify media, verify what the input actually returns. Check that the path exists and is readable, or that the URL resolves to media rather than an HTML error page or another non-media response. For a downloaded file, confirm the download completed. Corruption or a missing demuxer in the FFmpeg build are other possibilities, but investigate them only if the input and log point that way.
  4. If you use a concat list, inspect both the list and its entries. For a command using -f concat -i LIST, confirm that LIST is a valid concat script and each referenced file exists and can be read. Check whether its filenames are relative to the expected directory or need to be absolute. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer applies safe-path rules; its safe option rejects unsafe paths when enabled by default. Do not add -safe 0 automatically: it relaxes path acceptance, but does not repair an invalid file or a malformed list.
  5. Change one thing at a time. Once the exact input probes successfully, retry with the same output settings. If the failure continues, use the new complete log to determine whether it is still an input-processing problem or a later streaming problem.

Choose a repair only when the evidence fits

Packets appear readable, but the container may need refreshing

On a copy of the source, a stream-copy remux can place existing packets in a fresh container without re-encoding:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy output.mp4

This is a diagnostic option when the packets are mostly valid, not a guaranteed fix for every invalid-data error. Probe the output before using it in the live-loop command.

Presentation timestamps are missing

If the log or probe indicates missing presentation timestamps, test -fflags +genpts for that case. It is not a general-purpose response to the error, and it cannot make unrelated non-media data into a valid video.

The packets themselves appear damaged

Re-encoding may be a last resort when evidence indicates packet damage and a remux cannot produce a usable file. It takes longer and can change the video or audio; keep the original and test the output locally before replacing the live input.

Common symptoms and the next check

  • Error appears immediately on startup: identify which input FFmpeg is opening and probe that exact path or URL.
  • The input is a URL: verify that it returns media rather than an error page or other response, then check whether FFmpeg can identify its streams.
  • The input is a concat list: validate the script and each referenced path, including the concat demuxer’s safe-path behavior.
  • The stream starts and the error appears later: preserve the full log and note which input or processing stage is named at that point. Do not assume that changing YouTube ingest settings will fix a source-reading error.
  • A remux produces an output file: run ffprobe on that output and confirm that it identifies the expected container and streams before retrying the loop.
