For a standard 1080p, 30 fps SDR YouTube Live stream, use progressive 1920×1080 H.264 video at a constant 14 Mbps, a keyframe every 2 seconds, and AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265 at a 10 Mbps recommended bitrate for this format. To loop local files, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with -stream_loop -1 and pace playback with -re. The command below is a starting point: check your installed FFmpeg version and adapt it to your files before relying on it live.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for 1080p30
YouTube’s encoder guidance gives different bitrate targets by ingest codec. These are recommendations for the signal sent to YouTube, not guarantees of identical visual quality across different footage.
| Setting | H.264 baseline | AV1 or H.265 |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1920×1080 progressive at 30 fps | 1920×1080 progressive at 30 fps |
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | 4 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended |
| Rate control | CBR recommended | |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | |
| Color and pixel format | For the conventional SDR baseline: Rec. 709, 8-bit video; the example uses yuv420p | |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | |
At 30 fps, a 2-second keyframe interval is 60 frames. YouTube’s advanced encoder guidance also lists CABAC, two B-frames, and one reference frame. Available encoder controls vary by codec and FFmpeg build; consult the documentation for the encoder you actually use. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Use paths that resolve from the directory where you launch FFmpeg, or provide suitable paths in the entries. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads the entries as one ordered input. Check every file first: concat does not make mismatched codecs, dimensions, frame rates, timestamps, or audio layouts identical, and it does not guarantee seamless transitions. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
The example command uses -safe 0 to allow playlist paths that may not pass the demuxer’s default safety checks. Use it only with a playlist you control; review the documentation’s safety behavior before relaxing the checks.

In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its RTMPS ingest URL and associated stream key. Use the actual values displayed for your stream; keep the key private. YouTube recommends RTMPS and says Live Control Room detects encoder settings automatically by default. Choose custom stream-key settings if you need to set resolution or frame rate manually. See YouTube’s stream setup guidance.
-
Replace the destination placeholder below with the RTMPS destination assembled using the URL and key shown in Live Control Room. Do not publish or share the key.

Run this illustrative command from the directory containing
playlist.txt:ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -r 30 -s 1920x1080 -b:v 14M -minrate 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f flv 'RTMPS_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY'This is an untested command shape, not a validated universal preset. It assumes the listed files can be handled as a concat input and that the installed FFmpeg build includes the selected H.264 encoder. The flags request 1080p30 H.264 at a nominal constant 14 Mbps, with a 60-frame GOP, plus AAC stereo audio. Check how your chosen encoder implements rate control and keyframe options against the installed version’s documentation. FFmpeg documents
-stream_loopas an input option;-stream_loop -1repeats indefinitely.-repaces file reading at native rate so FFmpeg does not send the files as fast as it can process them. Input options belong before the relevant-i. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation. -
Watch the stream preview and health messages in Live Control Room while it connects and plays. Stop FFmpeg with your terminal’s interrupt command when you intend to end the broadcast.
Adapt the command to the actual media
Choosing an ingest codec
The sample uses H.264 because it is a conventional baseline. YouTube’s recommended target is 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30, compared with 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. Those alternatives only make sense if your FFmpeg build and machine support the chosen encoder and it can sustain real-time encoding. The cited YouTube guidance specifies ingest targets, not a universal quality ranking for arbitrary sources.

Mixed source files, missing audio, and timestamps
Before going live, inspect representative files for video codec, resolution, frame rate, audio presence and layout, and timestamp behavior. A playlist containing files with different properties may need preprocessing or explicit filter and mapping choices to create a consistent output. The right approach depends on those files; the example does not normalize every possible combination. If a clip has no audio, or the clips’ audio streams differ, adapt the audio mapping and handling rather than assuming the example will work unchanged.
Stream-copying can avoid re-encoding when inputs are already compatible, but it cannot by itself normalize incompatible formats or guarantee YouTube’s requested output settings. Re-encoding offers control over the output format, at the cost of requiring enough processing capacity to encode in real time. Verify behavior with the files and FFmpeg version you will use.
Preflight checks before leaving the stream unattended
-
Confirm all playlist paths work and every input plays through without decode errors.
-
Check that the computer can encode the chosen settings in real time. Sustained upload capacity must exceed the total configured stream bitrate with operating headroom; YouTube does not give one universal headroom factor in its cited guidance.

Run a test using representative motion and audio, then review YouTube’s stream-health messages before an event or unattended broadcast.
-
Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, rotate it in Live Control Room.
-
Confirm you have the rights needed to broadcast every video and audio track. A technically valid FFmpeg stream does not grant permission to use copyrighted material or ensure that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization rules. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming encoder guidance and the applicable channel and copyright policies before streaming.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open a playlist entry | Incorrect working directory, path, quoting, or demuxer safety rejection | Check the path and file spelling, try a controlled relative or absolute path, and consult the concat demuxer documentation before using -safe 0. |
| FFmpeg exits or errors at a clip boundary | Incompatible input properties or timestamps, or an input the concat demuxer cannot handle as listed | Inspect the failing files and consider preprocessing them to consistent codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and audio formats. The example cannot guarantee seamless concatenation. |
| Video appears at the wrong size or frame rate | Source media and requested output differ, or custom YouTube stream-key settings are not aligned | Check the encoded output and the stream’s settings in Live Control Room. Add appropriate scaling or frame-rate conversion only after determining the sources’ properties. |
| Audio is absent, distorted, or changes across clips | Missing audio, different channel layouts, or incompatible source audio | Inspect each file’s audio stream and adapt mapping or preprocessing; the example assumes AAC stereo output can be produced. |
| Stream health reports bitrate or connection problems | Insufficient or unstable upload capacity, encoding overload, or incorrect ingest destination/key | Verify the RTMPS URL and key, check CPU/encoder load and sustained upload capacity, and compare the outgoing bitrate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s guidance. |
| Stream will not authenticate or goes to the wrong broadcast | Incorrect, stale, or mismatched stream key or destination | Copy the current URL and key from the intended Live Control Room stream; rotate the key if compromised. |
Or let it run in the cloud
