Choose a rate that fits YouTube’s recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec—and the upload capacity your connection can sustain reliably. Use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval, and test with representative audio and motion before going live.
Where to lower the bitrate in OBS
- Open the output settings. In OBS, select Settings → Output. If you use Advanced output mode, find the streaming controls in the Streaming section.
- Lower Video Bitrate. Enter a value in the Video Bitrate field. This setting limits the encoder’s video data rate; it does not guarantee a stable stream if your connection is congested or inconsistent.
- Apply the change and test it. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream, then watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
OBS interface labels can vary slightly by application version. Its connection troubleshooting guidance specifically points to Settings → Output → Video Bitrate when addressing dropped frames and intermittent disconnections: OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
What bitrate should you use for YouTube Live?
There is no one best bitrate for every stream. YouTube’s recommended rate depends on the ingestion resolution, frame rate, and codec. The values below are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates; they are not guarantees of stream quality or stability. The current YouTube Help page does not state a publication year, and its recommendations may change: YouTube Live encoder settings.

For example, YouTube Help recommends 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60; at 1080p30, its recommendations are 10 Mbps and 14 Mbps, respectively. The same page lists minimums as well as recommendations—for 1080p60, 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264. Treat the recommended figure as a starting point, not a target to pursue regardless of network conditions.

Make the bitrate fit your upload connection
The stream’s total bitrate must fit the upload bandwidth actually available to it. YouTube advises leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused as headroom. A household or office connection may be shared, so its advertised upload speed does not necessarily reflect what OBS can use during a stream. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
OBS’s troubleshooting guidance, dated September 30, 2024, gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when diagnosing connection-related dropped frames. This is troubleshooting advice, not a universal formula: YouTube’s headroom advice, other network use, and the connection’s consistency still matter. If speed varies, try a lower bitrate and test under conditions similar to the actual broadcast.

- Measure upload bandwidth while the network is being used as it will be during the stream, not just when it is otherwise idle.
- Allow room for other devices and network variation rather than setting the stream rate equal to the connection’s headline speed.
- If you lower the video bitrate, expect image quality to decrease; the trade-off may be preferable to a stream that cannot maintain its connection.
Set the other encoder options that affect delivery
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP, and specifies CBR with a two-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed four seconds. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings if your available OBS encoder or interface differs.
Audio bitrate is separate from the Video Bitrate field. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 stereo audio at 128 Kbps, and AAC 5.1 surround at 384 Kbps. Choose audio settings appropriate to the event and the supported options in your encoder.

Test the stream and diagnose dropped frames
Before the event, test with audio and movement similar to what the stream will contain. A static screen alone may not reveal how the system behaves during gameplay, fast camera movement, or other busy scenes. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s connection indicators during the test and broadcast.
If OBS reports dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator
OBS says these symptoms can mean the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Lower Settings → Output → Video Bitrate, then test again. OBS also documents dynamic bitrate at Settings → Advanced → Network as a fallback. It can reduce quality by lowering the rate when needed; it does not repair the underlying connection problem.

If lowering the bitrate does not help
Bitrate is only one possible cause. OBS identifies network conditions, security software, VPNs, and the selected ingest server among factors that can contribute to connection trouble. Check for congestion or competing uploads, and investigate those factors rather than assuming that another bitrate change will solve every dropped-frame problem.
