Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A “connection reset” means the FFmpeg-to-YouTube connection failed; by itself, it does not identify whether the cause was FFmpeg, the VPS, an intervening network, or YouTube’s ingest service. To narrow it down, preserve the full FFmpeg log and exact UTC failure time, compare that time with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, then measure the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity and network behavior during streaming.
What a connection reset does—and does not—tell you
RTMP runs over TCP/IP, and FFmpeg documents port 1935 as its default RTMP port. A reset indicates a broken transport connection, not which component or network segment broke it. Also, do not assume the stream uses RTMP or port 1935: confirm the ingest URL and protocol actually configured in FFmpeg. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP.
There is not enough information in the title alone to attribute a disconnect to Mumbai, a particular VPS provider, or a YouTube ingest region. That would require evidence from the affected deployment, such as timestamped logs and route or throughput measurements, and ideally relevant provider-side records.
Start with evidence from the failure window
Preserve the FFmpeg details
Before changing settings, save the complete FFmpeg log around the disconnect and note the exact UTC time. Record the FFmpeg version and build configuration and the command used, but redact the stream key anywhere the command or logs might be shared. Note whether FFmpeg exits, keeps retrying, or reports a protocol or socket write failure. An error string alone is not enough to establish the root cause.

Check YouTube Live Control Room at the same time
Open the stream’s health and error messages in YouTube Live Control Room and compare their timestamps with the FFmpeg log. YouTube reports ingest problems such as incorrect format, bitrate, audio/video configuration, and keyframe frequency separately. If it flags one of these, correct the relevant encoder setting before treating the incident as a network reset. If the encoder output and CPU appear healthy but the stream disconnects, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points toward the strength of the outbound internet connection.

Measure VPS upload capacity and stability
Measure outbound throughput from the VPS; a download-speed result does not show whether the server can send the stream reliably. Compare available upload capacity with the combined configured audio and video bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. This is guidance, not a guarantee that a stream will stay connected: YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”
- Run an outbound throughput check from the VPS under conditions representative of the live stream. Where possible, measure toward the relevant destination or a suitable measurement endpoint.
- Compare the observed upload capacity with the combined configured audio/video rate, allowing YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Repeat measurements near the failure window and align their timestamps with the FFmpeg and Live Control Room records.
- Use a single speed test only as a snapshot. It cannot establish that an intermittent route remained healthy throughout a long session.

Verify encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance
Confirm the actual codec, bitrate mode, frame rate, and keyframe interval rather than assuming the settings from a preset are correct. YouTube’s encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate.
| H.264 example in YouTube’s guidance | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder-setting recommendations, not measurements of your VPS’s available upload bandwidth. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full codec and format tables; guidance can change.

Check the protocol, VPS, and network path
Confirm the configured ingest protocol and endpoint first. FFmpeg documents RTMP as TCP/IP and port 1935 as the default, while YouTube recommends RTMPS. Do not change a port or endpoint just because a reset occurred; verify that the new configuration is supported and compare results.
At the failure timestamp, check whether any relevant event coincided with the disconnect:

- A firewall or security-policy change, or a connection-tracking limit or timeout.
- A VPS host restart or other host-level event.
- A process supervisor action that stopped or restarted FFmpeg.
- A provider-reported network event or route change.
These are investigation leads, not established causes. If the provider’s region, routing, capacity, or policy becomes a plausible factor, ask support for records matching the timestamp. A controlled test from another network or provider can help isolate a route-related issue, but keep the media settings fixed so the comparison is meaningful. Improvement after a change is not proof of cause unless the test isolates that change and is repeated.
Use keepalive carefully
FFmpeg’s basic TCP keepalive option enables the operating system’s SO_KEEPALIVE behavior. FFmpeg’s documentation says that platform-specific keepalive timers are not configurable through that option. Keepalive may be worth evaluating when investigating idle-connection handling, but enabling it is not evidence that the underlying fault will be fixed, and it does not replace timestamped logs or sustained outbound measurements. See the FFmpeg protocols documentation.
Change one variable at a time
- If measurements show insufficient upload capacity, reduce bitrate or resolution to settings within YouTube’s current recommendations, then repeat the stream and capacity checks.
- If Live Control Room reports a format, bitrate, audio/video, or keyframe problem, correct that specific setting and confirm whether its warning clears.
- If evidence points toward a route or provider event, run a controlled comparison from another network or provider with the media settings unchanged, and request timestamp-matched provider records.
- Keep the logs and timestamps for each retest. Avoid changing codec, bitrate, protocol, VPS, and firewall settings all at once; doing so makes it difficult to identify which change mattered.
