YouTube Live Stream Keeps Reconnecting on Ubuntu: Check OBS Logs, System Logs, and RTMPS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If OBS keeps disconnecting and reconnecting while streaming to YouTube from Ubuntu, first correlate the OBS log, Ubuntu’s system journal, and YouTube Live Control Room at the time of the failure. Reconnects often indicate an unstable path to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain; they do not, by themselves, prove OBS or Ubuntu is broken. Check the evidence before changing settings.

Capture logs around the disconnect

Note the time and timezone when the stream drops. Keeping the time window narrow makes it easier to compare OBS, Ubuntu, and YouTube messages.

Open the OBS log

  1. In OBS, select Help → Log Files, then open the current or previous log for the affected session. If the stream is still running, use the current log; after restarting OBS, look for the previous session.
  2. On many Linux installations, logs are also stored in ~/.config/obs-studio/logs. This path can differ with Flatpak, Snap, or other packaging, so use the in-app menu if the directory is missing.
  3. Find entries at the recorded time for “Disconnected,” “Reconnecting,” RTMP send errors, timeouts, dropped frames, or output stopping. Read the surrounding lines rather than treating one error code as a diagnosis.

Before sharing a log publicly, remove or redact stream keys and other credentials.

Query Ubuntu’s journal

In a terminal, inspect recent journal entries and kernel messages:

journalctl --since "30 minutes ago" --no-pager
journalctl -k --since "30 minutes ago" --no-pager

The first command shows journal entries available to your user; the second narrows the view to kernel messages. To inspect a known event more precisely, replace the time expression with a specific --since value and, if useful, add --until. Compare timestamps with OBS and look for network link down/up events, driver or firmware resets, suspend/resume events, or signs of system overload. A matching timestamp is a clue, not proof that a particular message caused the reconnect. Ubuntu’s Jammy journalctl manual documents journal filtering; behavior and available logs can vary by Ubuntu release and configuration.

Check traditional log files if present

Ubuntu documents /var/log/syslog as a general system log and /var/log/kern.log as a kernel log. Use a viewer such as less or search for the relevant time and interface messages. These files may be absent or contain different information on a given setup; a missing or empty file does not establish that nothing happened. Check the journal as well. See Ubuntu’s Linux log files guide.

Interpret what the OBS log is telling you

The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, says: “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.” OBS notes that enough dropped frames can lead to disconnection. That points to a connection or capacity problem, but it does not identify whether the weak point is Wi-Fi, the router, the ISP route, a firewall, or another part of the path.

  • Dropped-frame counts rise before the reconnect: investigate upload stability and whether the selected bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain.
  • OBS connects successfully, then reports send errors or timeouts: investigate an interruption after setup. Compare journal timestamps and inspect the whole OBS log.
  • The connection fails immediately with an SSL, certificate, or timeout error: check the RTMPS endpoint, port, and whether the encoder supports RTMPS.
  • OBS’s local preview or recording is also poor, or CPU load is high: look at encoder load, capture sources, and local audio/video before focusing only on the network.

These are diagnostic branches, not definitive interpretations of any one log line. OBS’s guide notes that network causes are often outside OBS Studio’s control, while software and hardware can still interfere.

Check the Ubuntu connection without changing several things at once

Test a wired connection and sustainable bitrate

If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet; OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A cable is only a useful test or replacement if the wireless link or cable is implicated—it will not fix a bad RTMPS URL, an ISP routing problem, or a faulty router or network adapter.

Choose a bitrate that remains below stable upload capacity, not just a speed-test peak. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a general starting rule of thumb, not a guarantee for YouTube or a substitute for testing. YouTube likewise recommends testing upload speed and selecting a stream quality the connection can reliably support. See its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide.

Isolate interference carefully

  • Temporarily disconnect a VPN or isolate security software to test whether it affects the stream. Restore protection afterward; only consider a narrow application exception if evidence supports it.
  • If OBS offers another ingest server, test it as a single change and compare the result.
  • If other internet services are also unstable, restarting the modem or router may help identify a general connection problem. If local checks do not resolve persistent drops, contact your ISP.

Do not copy Windows-only OBS network instructions onto Ubuntu. The OBS guide marks network optimization and TCP pacing as Windows-only. IP-family and bind controls may vary by Linux build, so use only options actually present in your OBS version.

Check YouTube stream health and RTMPS settings

Read YouTube’s health messages first

Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and compare its reported health or errors with the OBS and Ubuntu timestamps. YouTube’s health messages can point to insufficient incoming video, low or high bitrate, unsupported codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, or a mismatch between primary and backup streams. Follow the specific message shown rather than changing several encoder settings at once. YouTube’s live encoder error guide covers common ingestion errors, and its stream health status reference lists health statuses.

YouTube’s guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio for standard live ingestion. If the displayed health issue concerns codec, bitrate, keyframes, resolution, or stream mismatch, correct that specific output setting and recheck the health display.

Verify RTMPS when the error points to the endpoint

YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP, for live streaming. If OBS reports an SSL error, timeout, or connection failure during setup, copy the current RTMPS server URL and stream key from the stream settings in Live Control Room; do not rely on an old saved endpoint. Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube says port 443 may need to be explicit for SSL errors. Its developer documentation specifies port 443 and TLS and explains that the server hostname is required for SNI authentication: YouTube live ingestion protocols.

A stale stream key is a separate possibility, especially if OBS reports an error when starting. Copy the current key from YouTube rather than assuming an existing saved key is still the one intended for the stream. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance is at Troubleshoot live stream errors.

Match the evidence to the next check

Evidence Branch to investigate Next check
Dropped-frame counter rises before reconnect Unstable upload path or bitrate beyond sustainable capacity Lower bitrate, test wired Ethernet, and check VPN, firewall, router, or ISP conditions.
OBS connects, then send errors or reconnects Interruption after initial connection Compare timestamps with interface and kernel logs; inspect the full OBS log.
Immediate SSL, certificate, or timeout error RTMPS URL, protocol, port, TLS support, or endpoint Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room; confirm RTMPS support and check port 443.
YouTube reports codec, bitrate, keyframe, resolution, or stream mismatch Encoder output or stream configuration Apply the recommendation for the specific health message and recheck.
Local preview or recording is also poor, or CPU load is high Encoder, capture source, or machine load Check encoder version and load, and inspect the routed audio and video sources.
Link flap or driver reset appears at the same time Possible local adapter, cable, or router issue Compare timestamps and test another cable, port, or connection; coincidence alone does not prove cause.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a different option from troubleshooting a live OBS camera or capture setup: it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud, so your Ubuntu computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
