If your YouTube Live video works but its audio is missing, trace the signal from source to YouTube: confirm FFmpeg sees audio, check stream mapping and output options, encode audio for the selected ingest protocol, then use YouTube’s stream-health message to verify the fix. Adding -c:a aac cannot help if the input has no audio or FFmpeg does not include it in the output.
1. Confirm FFmpeg receives an audio source
Start with the input, not the encoder. Inspect FFmpeg’s startup stream information and logs to see whether the intended input contains an audio stream. For a file, verify that the file actually has audio; for a capture setup, make sure the intended audio device is included and producing a signal.
- If FFmpeg reports no audio stream for the input, changing output encoding cannot create one. Fix the file, device, or capture configuration first.
- If FFmpeg detects audio, note its input index and stream number. You will need them when checking mapping.
YouTube’s noAudioStream health issue means the ingested stream has no audio; YouTube says it must contain exactly one audio stream. That message does not identify whether the cause is a silent source, a wrong capture device, or an FFmpeg omission. YouTube Live stream health documentation
2. Check FFmpeg stream selection and audio-disabling options
FFmpeg may select streams automatically or use explicit -map options. When mapping is specified, only the mapped streams go to that output, subject to FFmpeg’s documented filtergraph exception. Check that your output maps both the video and the intended audio stream, especially when the command has multiple inputs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Look for
-anin the output options. It disables audio recording, including automatic selection or mapping. - With multiple inputs, confirm the audio mapping points to the input that actually carries sound, rather than assuming it comes from the video input.
- If relying on automatic selection, FFmpeg documents that it selects one available audio stream; its criterion is the stream with the most channels. Verify the resulting output instead of assuming it chose the desired source.
FFmpeg options can apply to the next input or output file, so inspect where -an, -map, and codec options sit in the command. The FFmpeg documentation for advanced options explains manual stream selection and the effect of -an.
3. Match audio encoding to the YouTube ingest protocol
Identify whether your YouTube ingest is RTMP/RTMPS or HLS before changing audio settings. Recommendations and transport requirements differ. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. YouTube encoder settings and recommendations

RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as accepted audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS. Its recommendations are 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1, with 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1. YouTube’s health diagnostics can flag unsupported codecs, sample-rate problems, channel-count issues, or bitrate issues.
FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder is its default AAC encoder; its documentation gives a default bitrate of 128 kbps when no bitrate is specified. That can be a starting point for stereo, not proof that audio is present or correctly configured. Confirm the generated stream and YouTube’s health status. FFmpeg AAC encoder documentation

HLS
Do not apply RTMP codec assumptions to HLS. YouTube’s HLS guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio codecs, and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1, with 128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1. HLS delivery also has protocol-specific requirements:
- Use TS segments between 1 and 4 seconds.
- Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Send HTTPS POST/PUT requests and do not use byte ranges.
YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP. Check the HLS setup instructions alongside your audio configuration. YouTube HLS ingest setup

4. Use YouTube’s health message to target the repair
Read the specific audio issue in YouTube Live Control Room rather than changing unrelated video settings. The official health catalog includes:
noAudioStream: the ingest has no audio stream; it must contain exactly one.audioCodec: the audio codec is unsupported for the ingest.multipleAudioStreams: the ingest contains too many audio streams.- Other audio issues: bitrate, sample rate, channel count, and mismatches between primary and backup streams.
Match the message to the relevant stage: absent source or mapping for no audio, output encoding for codec or parameter issues, and stream configuration for multiple or mismatched streams. YouTube’s health-status catalog describes these issue names and meanings. YouTube Live stream health documentation

5. Test the complete stream before the event
YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. A controlled test is a practical way to hear the result and confirm YouTube receives it before relying on the live event. YouTube encoder settings and recommendations
6. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg input information shows no audio stream | Source file, capture device, or input configuration | Restore a real audio source or correct the selected capture input before changing output codecs. |
FFmpeg sees audio, but YouTube reports noAudioStream |
-map, input indexes, and -an |
Map the intended audio stream to the output and remove any output-scoped audio-disabling option. |
| YouTube reports an unsupported codec | Whether the ingest is RTMP/RTMPS or HLS, and its accepted codecs | Choose an audio codec listed for that protocol and retest. |
| YouTube flags sample rate, channel count, or bitrate | Output audio parameters for the selected protocol | Compare them with YouTube’s recommendations for stereo or 5.1 and adjust the output. |
| YouTube reports multiple audio streams | All mapped and automatically selected audio streams | Configure the output to contain exactly one audio stream. |
| HLS audio is missing or unhealthy | HLS codec plus segment, playlist, and HTTPS delivery settings | Check the HLS requirements as well as the audio stream; RTMP/RTMPS settings alone do not establish a valid HLS setup. |
