If an FFmpeg YouTube stream keeps showing video after an input reconnect but has no sound, first check whether the input still contains an audio stream. Reconnect options reopen or retry connections; they do not recreate missing audio. If audio is present, inspect -an, the -map options, and the output logs. The exact fix depends on your command, input protocol, FFmpeg build, and logs from before and after the reconnect.
Diagnose the input, mapping, and output in that order
FFmpeg can continue processing video even when the audio stream is absent or not selected. Use the startup and reconnect logs to compare what FFmpeg sees before and after the connection returns. Look for the input stream descriptions and the Stream mapping lines.
- Check the post-reconnect input listing. Does it show an audio stream? If not, changing output mapping cannot recreate audio that the source is no longer supplying. The source-side reason cannot be determined from the title alone.
- Check whether audio is disabled. Search the complete command for
-an. FFmpeg documents this output option as disabling audio recording, including automatic selection or mapping of audio. - Check the selected stream. Review every
-mapoption and verify that it selects an audio stream present in the input listing after reconnect. Explicit mapping gives you control over which input streams reach the output. - Inspect output mapping and encoding logs. If the input still lists audio and the command maps it, examine the output stream mapping and encoder messages. The issue may be in output configuration or elsewhere; the available details do not establish which.

What optional audio mapping does—and does not do
A mapping such as -map 0:a? makes the audio mapping optional: FFmpeg can proceed if that input has no audio stream. It can therefore prevent a missing-stream mapping error, but it does not restore or synthesize audio. If the source has no audio after reconnect, an optional map may simply produce an output without sound.

Check reconnect options only after identifying the input protocol
Reconnect behavior and audio selection are separate concerns. FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol implementation defines options for retrying after disconnection, EOF, network errors, selected HTTP errors, and streamed or non-seekable inputs. They control connection retries; they do not select, generate, or restore an audio stream. Do not apply HTTP-specific flags to an input using another protocol.
In the retrieved FFmpeg HTTP protocol source, reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, and reconnect_streamed default to false; reconnect_delay_max defaults to 120 seconds; and reconnect_delay_total_max defaults to 256 seconds. respect_retry_after defaults to enabled, while reconnect_max_retries is unset (unlimited) in the source declaration. These are HTTP-option defaults in that source, not universal settings for every FFmpeg build or input protocol. Information needed for a specific command fix
There is not enough information to prescribe a safe, exact command edit here. To narrow the cause down, collect:
- The full FFmpeg command line, with any YouTube stream key redacted.
- The FFmpeg version and build information.
- The input protocol and type of input URL.
- Relevant logs from startup and after reconnect, including the input stream listing and
Stream mappinglines. - The output mapping and audio-encoding messages.
Compare the pre- and post-reconnect input listings first. That distinguishes a source stream that lost audio from an audio stream that FFmpeg sees but does not send to the output. The official FFmpeg streaming guide is also useful for destination-specific setup, but it does not establish a reconnect-specific audio remedy.
