Download TexTools through the official project site or its linked GitHub releases, then follow the instructions for the specific release you choose. Broadly, using a mod involves obtaining a pack from its creator, importing or installing it through that build’s supported flow, reviewing its options, applying it, and checking the result in game. Exact screens and compatibility can vary, so treat this as orientation rather than a version-specific walkthrough.
Before installing anything, note that Square Enix’s stated rules prohibit modifying game software or data and using utilities that interact with the game. TexTools says it is not affiliated with Square Enix. No mod tool should be presented as officially endorsed, risk-free, or exempt from enforcement.
Download TexTools from the official project
Start at the TexTools project page, which links to the installer and GitHub releases. Check the instructions and release notes for the build you download before following screenshots or steps written for another version. The project page does not provide a detailed, versioned click-by-click setup guide, so exact current dialog names and compatibility details should be confirmed against that release.
TexTools is a modding application used to install and manage FFXIV mod packs as well as create mods. A physical purchase or external drive is not required. Keeping backup copies of packs or configuration on separate storage is optional, not a TexTools requirement or a verified performance improvement.

Install a mod pack with TexTools
Pack formats, options, and installation behavior depend on the pack and the version of TexTools. Use the mod creator’s instructions alongside the documentation for your installed build.
- Install TexTools. Download it from the official project page or its linked release, then follow the instructions supplied with that release.
- Get a compatible pack. Download the mod pack from its creator and read its notes for supported game or tool versions, prerequisites, and any special directions.
- Import or install the pack. Use the import or installation flow supported by your TexTools build. Do not rely on menu names or screenshots from a different release.
- Review the pack’s options. If the creator provides variants or configurable choices, select the ones you want before applying the pack.
- Apply it and verify in game. Follow the release and pack instructions, then check the relevant character, item, or scene in game. If it does not appear or behaves unexpectedly, consult the creator’s compatibility notes and the current TexTools documentation rather than assuming one fix works for every pack.
TexTools or Penumbra: which approach fits?
Penumbra is a separate runtime mod loader, not a TexTools feature. Its maintainers describe compatibility with most TexTools mod packs as best-effort, not guaranteed. Penumbra’s documented operational differences may matter if you want to toggle mods while playing or manage conflicts.

How Penumbra fits into the setup
Penumbra’s documented installation route depends on XIVLauncher and Dalamud: XIVLauncher loads Dalamud, which is the plugin framework. Penumbra’s repository instructions direct users to register its repository in Dalamud’s settings and then install Penumbra through the plugin installer. Follow the current instructions in the Penumbra repository for the exact steps; this is a separate setup from installing TexTools.

Square Enix’s North American support article, “Prohibited Activities in Final Fantasy XIV”, identifies “Modifying, analyzing, integrating, and/or reverse-engineering game software or data” as prohibited. It also lists creating, distributing, using, or promoting utilities that interact with the game. The page says Square Enix may determine and enforce prohibited activity at its discretion.

That policy context applies regardless of whether a mod is installed through TexTools or loaded at runtime with Penumbra. Do not assume that a particular client-side mod is undetectable, that an account cannot be penalized, or that either tool is endorsed by Square Enix. The cited policy is for North America; readers in other regions should consult the relevant regional policy.
