The official FH5 launch material describes a new FH5 starter garage and FH5-specific car collection, not an import of cars owned in Forza Horizon 4. It also describes cross-save between platforms for FH5, which is a different feature from moving inventory between two games.
The practical answer: start FH5 with a new garage
Your Forza Horizon 4 garage should not be treated as an inventory that appears automatically in Forza Horizon 5. The safest plan is to begin FH5 expecting to acquire its cars inside FH5 rather than waiting for an FH4 collection to populate.

There is an important qualification. The official pages reviewed do not contain a sentence phrased as a direct prohibition, such as “FH4 cars cannot transfer to FH5.” The conclusion comes from how Forza describes FH5: it has its own opening car grants, its own garage, and its own Car Collection interface. Those descriptions establish separate game progression, even though they do not answer every possible question about loyalty rewards or other account-linked bonuses.

You choose from three FH5 starter cars
Forza’s September 3, 2021 FH5 launch article says that the opening experience lets a player choose one of three starter cars. The other two are then added to the new FH5 garage. That is a defined FH5 starting grant, not a mechanism for importing an existing FH4 garage.

The same article says the 2020 Toyota GR Supra would be added to every player’s garage at the start. Because this grant is described as part of FH5’s launch setup, it should be understood as an FH5 reward available within that game. It does not indicate that cars previously owned in FH4 are copied across.
FH5 records cars in its own Car Collection
Forza’s September 7, 2021 car-list article describes vehicles as cars players acquire in FH5 and explains that the game’s Car Collection interface tracks acquired vehicles by manufacturer. The collection is therefore a record of FH5 acquisition and progress. An FH4 ownership history is not described as a source for automatically filling that interface.
Cross-save is not the same as transferring cars between games
Many players see “cross-save” associated with Forza and reasonably assume it might include an older Horizon title. In the official FH5 launch material, however, cross-save refers to continuing FH5 progress on supported platforms. It does not describe moving a garage from FH4 into FH5.

The distinction is simple: cross-play concerns who you can play with, while cross-save concerns continuing the same game’s save across supported platforms. A cross-title garage migration would be a separate feature and is not described in the FH5 launch documentation.
What to expect the first time you launch FH5
- Keep your FH4 save intact. FH4 and FH5 should be treated as separate games. Starting FH5 does not require deleting or replacing your FH4 progress.
- Complete FH5’s opening sequence. The launch setup presents the FH5 starter-car choice. Pick one of the three options when prompted.
- Check the FH5 garage after the grant is awarded. The two unchosen starter cars and the 2020 Toyota GR Supra are described as additions to the FH5 garage under the launch arrangement.
- Use Car Collection to track FH5 acquisitions. The collection interface is organized around vehicles acquired in FH5, with manufacturer-based tracking.
- Acquire additional cars through FH5’s own progression. Do not pause your playthrough expecting the FH4 garage to appear after a later sync, platform change, or account sign-in.
These steps do not require an FH4-to-FH5 transfer menu because the official material does not describe one. If a particular reward or account entitlement is missing, check the in-game reward and garage information for that title rather than assuming that an FH4 save must be imported.
What happens to your FH4 cars, and what does not follow from the evidence
Your FH4 garage remains an FH4 collection
The practical implication is that cars earned or purchased in FH4 remain part of your FH4 progression. You can continue using them by launching FH4, but the reviewed FH5 descriptions give no basis for expecting the same vehicles to be selectable in FH5 automatically.

Do not infer automatic transfers for other content
The available official pages do not resolve every type of cross-title content. In particular, they do not directly settle whether any FH4 ownership rewards, loyalty gifts, designs, tunes, credits, accolades, or other account-linked items might be recognized in a particular FH5 context. Those possibilities should not be presented as guaranteed transfers. The documented FH5 starter grants are the reliable starting point described by the source.

A new FH5 collection is normal, not a sign of a failed sync
If FH5 opens with only its own starter and launch-grant cars, that matches the way the game is described. An empty or mostly empty FH5 Car Collection does not by itself indicate that your FH4 save was corrupted, that you used the wrong console, or that a cloud-sync repair is required.
Platform scenarios that commonly cause confusion
Moving from Xbox to PC with FH5
The FH5 launch article specifically identifies Microsoft Store and Xbox Game Pass support for cross-save between PC and Xbox consoles. That means FH5 progress can continue across those supported versions of FH5. It should not be interpreted as a bridge from FH4’s garage into FH5’s garage.

Playing FH5 through Steam
The same article says Steam has cross-play but not cross-save in the described arrangement. Cross-play lets players on compatible versions play together; it does not synchronize a garage between platforms or between Horizon titles. If you change from Steam to a Microsoft Store or Xbox Game Pass version, verify the supported FH5 save arrangement for your account and edition rather than assuming that a platform move creates an FH4 import.
Changing consoles while keeping the same game
A same-title platform continuation and a cross-title transfer are different questions. The documented FH5 cross-save behavior addresses the former. It cannot be used as evidence that an FH4 inventory is copied into FH5, even when both games are played on the same Xbox account.

- Confirm the title. Open FH4 if you are looking for an FH4-owned car; open FH5 if you are checking an FH5 starter or launch grant.
- Check the FH5 garage and Car Collection. The collection is the game’s own record of acquired FH5 vehicles.
- Finish the introductory award steps. Starter cars and the launch-grant Supra are described as part of the beginning of FH5, so check after the opening sequence rather than before the game has issued its rewards.
- Verify the platform feature you are using. Cross-save details in the launch article apply to FH5 on Microsoft Store/Xbox Game Pass PC and Xbox consoles; Steam is described as cross-play without cross-save.
- Do not delete saves as a first response. Nothing in the cited material says deleting FH4 or FH5 data will create a cross-title transfer. Preserve both games’ saves while you investigate a title-specific reward issue.
