These messages usually indicate damage to a Windows component, not a missing game file or Visual C++ runtime.
fhuxcommon.dll is identified as the Microsoft Windows File History Common Library. It belongs to the Windows File History feature, which protects personal files by storing backup copies on an external drive or network location. Public Windows file inventories identify the normal location as %WINDIR%System32 and associate the DLL with components including FileHistory.exe, fhuxapi.dll, and fhuxadapter.dll.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the right starting point:
- The error appeared after Windows Update, a crash, or an unexpected shutdown: install pending updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- The DLL disappeared after an antivirus scan: inspect quarantine and verify the file before restoring anything.
- File History fails but
fhuxcommon.dllis present: check the backup drive, permissions, and File History configuration. - The issue began after installing software, a driver, or a cleanup utility: try System Restore or uninstall the recent change.
- DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows: use Windows Update’s repair reinstall option, if available, or perform an in-place reinstall.
- Only one user account has the problem: test from another administrator account to identify profile damage.
- You found the DLL on a download site: do not copy it into
System32,SysWOW64, or an application folder.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or interrupted update can leave Windows components incomplete or inconsistent. Complete servicing first, because DISM may use Windows Update as a repair source.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management, or DISM, before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC uses that repaired source to check protected system files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. It can appear to pause for a while.
- Keep the Command Prompt window open.
A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully and that the operation was completed successfully. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, make sure Windows Update is working, restart, and run the command again.
Run SFC
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The useful results are:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files passed the check.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test File History again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, install pending updates, and run DISM followed by SFC again.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart and retry from an elevated Command Prompt.
If SFC still cannot repair files, see the repair-reinstall steps below. The CBS.log file at %WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log contains technical details, but most users do not need to edit it or extract a replacement DLL manually.
Repeating SFC without knowing whether the component store changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows repair issues and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows repair or reinstall remains the definitive path when system servicing is damaged.
Restart after successful repairs, then test the feature again.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software may quarantine a system file after a false positive or after detecting a modified copy. Do not turn off antivirus protection to install fhuxcommon.dll from the internet.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
fhuxcommon.dll. - Note the detected path and the action taken.
- If the file is in the expected Windows directory and your security product identifies it as a genuine Microsoft file, follow the product’s restore process.
- Update security definitions.
- Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
A Microsoft signature in a public inventory supports the authenticity of that particular examined sample. It does not prove that every file named fhuxcommon.dll is genuine. Treat the copy as suspicious if it is outside the expected Windows directory, has an unusual name variation, or has an invalid Microsoft signature.
If malware may be involved, use Windows Security scans first. Persistent infection symptoms may require offline recovery or a clean Windows installation.
Fix 4: Verify the file’s path and signature
Checking the path can distinguish a Windows component from an unrelated file using the same name.
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Open the Windows drive, normally
C:. - Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Look for
fhuxcommon.dll.

%WINDIR%System32
If the file is present there, do not assume that replacing it will fix the error. “The module was not found” can mean that the named DLL exists but another dependency cannot be loaded.
To inspect a file’s signature:
- Right-click
fhuxcommon.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
The file’s description, company, product, build, size, and architecture can vary by Windows release. There is no complete Microsoft-published matrix covering every version, size, language, hash, and architecture for this DLL.
Fix 5: Repair File History itself
If fhuxcommon.dll is present and passes a signature check, the failure may be in File History’s target or configuration rather than the DLL.
Check the following:
- Reconnect the external drive used by File History, or confirm that the network location is reachable.
- In Windows 11, open Control Panel from Start search. In Windows 10, do the same.
- Select System and Security.
- Select File History.
- Confirm whether Windows recognizes the backup drive.
- Select Run now if File History is available but has stopped backing up.
- Check that the drive has free space and that your account can write to it.
- If the target is a network location, confirm that the computer is connected to the network and that the saved path is still available.
A File History error that occurs only when the backup target is disconnected is different from a missing system DLL. Reconnect the drive or repair the network target before changing Windows files.

Fix 6: Try another administrator account
A damaged user profile can affect File History settings or the way Windows launches a component.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Other users. In Windows 10, this may be listed as Family & other users.
- Select Add account.
- Create a local test account, then change its account type to Administrator.
- Sign out of your current account.
- Sign in to the test account.
- Test the same File History operation.
If the error occurs in both accounts, the problem is probably system-wide. If it occurs only in the original account, copy important data to a healthy profile and investigate profile repair rather than placing a DLL in the user folder.
Fix 7: Use System Restore or remove a recent update
System Restore is appropriate when the problem started after a driver change, cleanup utility, software installation, or update and a restore point exists from before the failure.
- Open Start search and type
Create a restore point. - Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the
fhuxcommon.dllerror began. - Select Next, review the affected items, and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the rollback.
System Restore normally affects system files, drivers, installed programs, and settings rather than personal documents.

Should you install Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a driver
No. fhuxcommon.dll is associated with Windows File History, not with a known Visual C++ redistributable, DirectX package, .NET runtime, game, graphics driver, or particular third-party installer.
Install a runtime only when a specific application documents that runtime as its dependency and provides an official installer. Installing unrelated packages will not restore a Windows system component.
A driver update is relevant only if the error began after a device or storage-driver problem, or if Device Manager shows a device failure:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing device.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not use Device Manager to replace fhuxcommon.dll.
When several devices have stale or mismatched drivers, manually identifying the correct package can mean checking hardware IDs and vendor releases one by one. Outbyte Driver Updater scans for outdated drivers and shows the available driver updates, while installation is handled by the full version. A driver utility is not required to repair fhuxcommon.dll, and Windows component repair remains the correct fix for a system-file error.
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not run this as a generic repair:
regsvr32 fhuxcommon.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore deleted Windows files or repair the component store. It may report that the entry point was not found or that registration failed. That result does not prove the DLL is corrupt.
Use DISM and SFC for Windows system-file damage.
Is manual DLL copying safe
No. Do not download fhuxcommon.dll from a random DLL archive or copy it into:

- a user profile folder
A downloaded file may contain malware, have the wrong build, be modified, or fail because another dependency is missing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is still the standard directory for Windows system components; do not interpret public descriptions of a file as instructions to select a separate “32-bit version” for SysWOW64.
The safe sources are Windows Update, the installed Windows component store, Windows recovery tools, and official Microsoft installation media.
FAQ
Is fhuxcommon.dll a Microsoft file
It is identified in public Windows file inventories as the Microsoft Windows File History Common Library. That supports its association with Windows, but a filename alone does not authenticate every copy. Check the expected path and digital signature.
Which Windows versions contain it
Public listings associate it with Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10-era files, and File History remains a Windows feature on supported Windows releases. Public listings are not a complete Microsoft version catalogue, so do not use an old version table to choose a replacement.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit
Public inventories describe an examined copy as a 32-bit PE DLL. That does not mean you should download a 32-bit file or place it in SysWOW64. Let Windows servicing restore the matching component for your installation.
Will installing Visual C++ fix the error
There is no verified connection between this DLL and Visual C++. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
File History still fails even though the DLL exists. What now
Check the backup drive or network target, permissions, available space, and File History configuration. If the problem affects only one account, test another administrator profile.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if DISM and SFC both fail
Restart, install all Windows updates, and run DISM before SFC again. If repair still fails, use Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update on supported Windows 11 systems, or perform an in-place reinstall using official Microsoft media.
Can I replace only this one file
That is unsafe and may not address a missing dependency. Restore the Windows component through servicing or repair installation instead.
