fileassoc.dll errors usually mean that Musicmatch Jukebox is damaged, partly uninstalled, or being started by an orphaned Windows entry. The file is not a normal Windows component, so copying it into a system folder is usually the wrong repair.
The exact errors you may see
Windows or an older application may display one of these messages:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
This application failed to start because fileassoc.dll was not found.
The file fileassoc.dll is missing or corrupted.
A required component is missing: fileassoc.dll. Please install the application again.
Error loading fileassoc.dll. The specified module could not be found.
The program can't start because fileassoc.dll is missing from your computer.
Cannot find fileassoc.dll.
Cannot register fileassoc.dll.
These are commonly reported error formats rather than confirmed Musicmatch support messages. The wording still provides a useful clue: identify the application, shortcut, scheduled task, or startup entry that is trying to load the file.
The 60-second answer
fileassoc.dll is the FileAssoc DLL from MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX, developed by MUSICMATCH, Inc. It is a third-party application file, not a Microsoft runtime, Windows driver, or standard file for C:WindowsSystem32.

The safest repair is:
- Confirm whether Musicmatch Jukebox is installed.
- Check Windows Security Protection history for quarantine.
- Back up any Musicmatch library or audio files.
- Uninstall the damaged copy.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall Musicmatch only from a trustworthy original installer or installation disc.
If you no longer use Musicmatch, uninstalling it and removing its leftover startup entry is normally safer than trying to revive a discontinued application.
Historical installation listings place the file in the Musicmatch application directory, such as:
C:Program FilesMUSICMATCHMUSICMATCH JukeboxFileAssoc.dll
The exact folder can vary by release or bundled installation. Available historical metadata commonly identifies the DLL as 32-bit, but old version and size records are not confirmed by a current Musicmatch installer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat causes the error?
| Likely cause | What it means | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete installation | Musicmatch did not install all of its files | Reinstall the complete application |
| Damaged installation | The DLL or another application file was deleted or corrupted | Uninstall and reinstall |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed or isolated the file | Check Protection history before restoring |
| Leftover startup entry | Musicmatch was removed but Windows still launches it | Disable or remove the identified entry |
| Missing dependency | The DLL exists, but another required module does not | Reinstall the complete program |
| Windows corruption | Protected Windows components are also failing | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Recent system change | An update, cleanup, or installation triggered the failure | Consider System Restore |
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean fileassoc.dll itself is missing. Windows may have found the file but failed to load a dependency required by it.
First, confirm what is calling fileassoc.dll
Before changing Windows folders or downloading anything, determine whether Musicmatch is still present.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Select Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Musicmatch Jukebox.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall if you intend to remove it.
On Windows 10:
- Select Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Apps & features.
- Search for Musicmatch Jukebox.
- Select it and choose Uninstall.
You can also open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select Musicmatch Jukebox, and choose Uninstall.
If Musicmatch appears in the list and you still need it, do not delete individual DLLs. Repairing or reinstalling the whole application restores its related files and dependencies together.

The presence of fileassoc.dll in the Musicmatch directory is useful, but it does not prove that the file is safe or complete. Check its path and properties:
- Right-click
fileassoc.dll. - Select Properties.
- Review the General and Details tabs.
- Confirm that it is located inside the Musicmatch installation directory.
- Do not move it to another folder.
An old DLL can be genuine but still incompatible, corrupted, or accompanied by missing dependencies. Its filename alone is not a security verification.

Back up personal files first

Remove the damaged installation
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Musicmatch Jukebox.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If Musicmatch is not listed, check Control Panel > Programs and Features. If there is no entry there either, remove only clearly identified leftover startup references after confirming their executable path.
Reinstall from trustworthy original media
Use an original Musicmatch installer, installation disc, or a backup made from a known-good installation. There is no clearly verified current official Musicmatch download or support page, so treat surviving installers as archival software.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Before running an old installer:
- Scan the installer with current security software.
- Confirm that it came from your own original media or a source you can verify.
- Avoid installers bundled with “DLL fixers,” cracks, activators, or unrelated utilities.
- Keep the original installation directory unless the installer requires another location.
- Do not replace one DLL manually after installation.
After setup completes, restart Windows and launch Musicmatch from its installed shortcut. If it opens without the error, the missing file and its application dependencies were restored together.
If the installer fails or Windows blocks it because it is incompatible, do not compensate by downloading fileassoc.dll separately. Removing the obsolete application may be the safer outcome.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or isolated the file. This is especially relevant if the error began after a scan, security update, cleanup, or attempted reinstall.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry referring to
fileassoc.dll, Musicmatch, or the installation directory. - Open the detection details and review the path and action.
Do not restore the file merely because the filename matches the error. Restore it only if all of the following are true:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- It came from your original Musicmatch installer.
- Its location is the Musicmatch application folder.
- The detection details do not indicate malware or modification.
- You have confirmed the installer and file are trustworthy.
Microsoft notes that a restored quarantined file may be detected again. If the file was modified or identified as malicious, leave it quarantined, remove the old installation, and reinstall from clean original media instead.
Fix 3: Remove an obsolete startup reference
If the error appears every time Windows starts, but Musicmatch is no longer installed, Windows may be launching a leftover entry.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps on Windows 11, or the Startup tab on Windows 10.
- Look for Musicmatch or an unknown entry associated with an old Musicmatch path.
- Right-click the entry.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling the entry is safer than immediately deleting it. If the error disappears, you have identified the source.
Check Task Scheduler
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch at logon or system startup.
- Select a suspicious task and inspect the Actions tab.
- Confirm whether its executable points to a missing Musicmatch folder or
fileassoc.dll. - If it is clearly an orphaned Musicmatch task, right-click it and choose Disable.
- Delete it only after confirming that it belongs to the removed application.
Also check:
- Settings > Apps > Startup
- The two Windows Startup folders
- Known
Runentries in Windows settings or the registry
Do not delete arbitrary registry values. Identify the exact executable path first. If the path points to a missing file, disabling the startup item may be enough.
Recommended Free Tools
If an unfamiliar executable—not Musicmatch—is requesting fileassoc.dll, scan the computer and investigate that executable separately. The error may be caused by an orphaned installer, a shortcut, or unwanted software.
Fix 4: Reinstall dependencies only when evidence points to one
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET automatically just because a DLL error appears. No verified evidence identifies a particular current runtime package as the supplier of fileassoc.dll.

the missing item may be another old Musicmatch DLL, an incompatible component, or an architecture mismatch. Reinstalling the complete application is more reliable than adding separate runtime files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Musicmatch is commonly identified as a 32-bit application. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run a 32-bit program, but the entire 32-bit dependency set must be intact. Installing a random 64-bit replacement DLL will not solve that problem.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They normally do not recreate a third-party Musicmatch DLL, so use them as secondary checks, especially if Windows has other symptoms such as failed updates, broken system tools, or multiple system files reporting errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both complete successfully but the Musicmatch message remains, that result is expected: the repair tools do not normally know how to restore fileassoc.dll.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM does not reveal what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing reported problems; repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling Musicmatch remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates
Windows updates are not a direct source for fileassoc.dll, but updating can correct general system issues that prevent old applications from launching.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to the same page and check again.
On Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
If Windows Update itself fails, repair Windows components first with DISM and SFC. Do not expect an update to recreate the Musicmatch DLL.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after an application installation, cleanup, update, driver change, or registry-related change.
- Press Win + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs while normally preserving personal files. It does not replace a trustworthy reinstall of Musicmatch, and it is not useful if no suitable restore point exists.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Update drivers only when the evidence points to a driver problem
A display, audio, or storage driver is not the normal cause of a missing Musicmatch DLL. Use Device Manager only if the error appeared alongside device failures, crashes, missing hardware, or broader application launch problems.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean driver reinstall:
- In Device Manager, right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm only if you have a replacement driver available.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
When hunting through many hardware versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues; the free scan identifies them and the full version performs driver installation. This is optional and does not replace reinstalling Musicmatch when Musicmatch is the caller.
Do not copy fileassoc.dll into System32 or SysWOW64
Avoid instructions that tell you to place this file in both:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The available historical installation evidence places fileassoc.dll in the Musicmatch directory, not in a Windows system directory. Copying an old third-party DLL into Windows folders can create conflicts, expose other programs to the wrong file, and conceal the real problem.
Do not assume that both folders are required because generic DLL pages recommend them. Windows uses these directories differently on 64-bit systems, and the application’s own directory is normally searched for its private dependencies.

Do not use regsvr32 by default
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components. There is no established evidence that fileassoc.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.
If you run:
regsvr32 fileassoc.dll
and receive a registration error, that does not prove the DLL is missing or that registration is required. It may simply be the wrong type of DLL for that command.
Use the original Musicmatch installer instead. Only register this file if authoritative documentation for the specific Musicmatch release explicitly requires it.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading an isolated fileassoc.dll from an unknown DLL site is risky because:
- The file may contain malware.
- The version may not match your Musicmatch release.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- The file may be modified or corrupted.
- The missing dependency may remain unresolved.
- The download may encourage unsafe System32 or SysWOW64 copying.
- It may leave the damaged application installation in place.
There is no verified current official Musicmatch download to recommend. Use original installation media or a trustworthy installer whose provenance and security status you can verify. If that is not available, uninstall Musicmatch rather than introducing an unverified DLL into Windows.
If the error still appears after reinstalling
If a clean reinstall does not solve the message:
- Record the exact wording.
- Note which program or shortcut displays it.
- Check whether the message names an executable path.
- Review Event Viewer:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
eventvwr.msc. - Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Review errors recorded at the time of the failure.
- Check Task Manager startup entries and Task Scheduler again.
- Confirm that the installed
fileassoc.dllremains in the Musicmatch directory. - Scan Windows Security for unwanted software.
- Test whether the error appears only for one user account or at every boot.
If the error is caused by a shortcut, task, installer stub, or unknown executable rather than Musicmatch itself, reinstalling the application may not remove the caller. Identify that caller before making further changes.

FAQ
Is fileassoc.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Musicmatch Jukebox and is not a standard Microsoft Windows component.
Which program installed fileassoc.dll?
Musicmatch Jukebox, developed by MUSICMATCH, Inc., installed the file as part of its application files.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a default response. No specific current runtime has been verified as the supplier of this DLL. Reinstall the complete Musicmatch application first.
Can I copy fileassoc.dll to System32?
No. Historical installation evidence places it in the Musicmatch folder. Do not use System32 or SysWOW64 as a first-line fix.

A dependency of fileassoc.dll may be absent, incompatible, or damaged. Reinstall the complete application instead of copying another isolated DLL.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually no. There is no established evidence that this file requires COM registration.
What if antivirus quarantined it?
Review Protection history and the detection path. Restore it only when its provenance is trustworthy and the file came from clean original Musicmatch media. Otherwise, reinstall or remove Musicmatch.
What if I no longer use Musicmatch?
Uninstall it, restart Windows, and disable any remaining Musicmatch startup task or shortcut after verifying its path. Removing an obsolete application is generally safer than maintaining it solely to suppress a startup message.
Can 64-bit Windows run Musicmatch?
Yes, it can run many 32-bit applications, but the application’s complete 32-bit files and dependencies must be present. A random replacement DLL will not correct an incomplete installation.
