Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →filesystem_x86_rwdi.dll is a 32-bit game DLL, not a Windows system file. It is associated with older Techland games that use the Chrome Engine/RWDI technology, so the safest fix is to repair the exact game installation that reports the error rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What filesystem_x86_rwdi.dll belongs to
Public game manifests show this file beside the executable in original 32-bit releases of:
- Dead Island and Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition
- Call of Juarez: The Cartel
The older Dead Island files include DeadIslandGame.exe, engine_x86_rwdi.dll, game_x86_rwdi.dll, and filesystem_x86_rwdi.dll in the same game directory. Newer 64-bit editions use a different file, filesystem_x64_rwdi.dll. For example, Dead Island Definitive Edition and Dying Light use x64 RWDI files.
The filename therefore gives you two useful clues:
| Clue | What it means |
|---|---|
x86 |
The file belongs to a 32-bit game build |
rwdi |
It is associated with Techland’s RWDI game engine files |
| Beside the game executable | This is the normal location for an application-local DLL |
| Missing or not found | The game file, or one of its dependencies, may be unavailable |
This is not an exhaustive list of every game that may have shipped the file. If the error names another older game, check that game’s original installation files and official support information.

First, identify the affected game
Read the complete error message and note which program appears immediately before it. Then check the shortcut you used to launch the game:
- Right-click the game shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Look at Target and Start in.
- Open the folder shown in Start in, if available.
- Check whether
filesystem_x86_rwdi.dllis present beside the game executable.
If you launch through Steam:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files.
- Select Browse to open the installation folder.
Do not copy the file from a different game, a newer edition, or another computer. Even when two games use similarly named RWDI libraries, their files may not be interchangeable.
Fix 1: Verify or reinstall the game
This is the most likely solution when the file is missing, corrupted, or deleted by security software.
Verify files in Steam
- Restart Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click the affected game and select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game from Steam.
Steam compares the installed files with the game’s package and downloads missing or damaged files. If the file reappears beside the game executable and the game starts, the repair worked.
If verification reports that files were replaced but the error returns, continue with the antivirus checks below. If verification cannot complete, uninstall the game, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the official launcher or installer.
Repair through another launcher
Other launchers use similar options, although the names differ. Look for:
- Verify
- Verify and repair
- Scan and repair
- Repair installation
- Check game files
Run the launcher as administrator only if the launcher cannot access its own installation folder:
- Close the launcher.
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for the launcher.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Repeat its file-verification process.
For a disc or standalone installation, use the original installer’s Repair option. If no repair option exists, uninstall the game and reinstall it from the legitimate installer.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a game DLL after identifying it as suspicious, including through a false positive. Do not immediately disable protection.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the game folder or
filesystem_x86_rwdi.dll. - Review the detection name and file path.
- If the installation is from a trusted official source and the detection is clearly a false positive, use the available Restore or Allow on device action.
- Run the game’s file verification again.
Do not restore a DLL from an untrusted installer or an unexpected folder. If antivirus removes the file again, update Windows Security, scan the installer, and contact the game publisher or security vendor about the detection.
After confirming that the installation is trusted, you can add the specific game folder to the antivirus exclusions list. Keep the exclusion as narrow as possible. Do not exclude the entire C:Windows directory or the whole system drive.
Fix 3: Install the game’s required runtimes
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that filesystem_x86_rwdi.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load a dependency that it requires.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOld games commonly include prerequisite installers in folders named Redist, Support, _CommonRedist, or Prerequisites. Look inside the game folder for installers involving:
- An x86 Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX components
- Other runtime packages supplied by the game
Run the x86 package even if Windows is 64-bit. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit games, but those games still require 32-bit runtime libraries.
If the game includes an older Visual C++ installer, use it first. Microsoft’s current Visual C++ Redistributable documentation is also available from the official Microsoft Learn site. Installing a newer package does not necessarily replace every older runtime an old game may need.
After installing a prerequisite:
- Restart Windows.
- Run the game’s file verification again.
- Launch the game normally.
- Note whether the error changes or disappears.
Do not install random runtime DLLs individually. Dependencies must match the application’s architecture and expected runtime version.

Fix 4: Confirm the game edition and architecture
Do not replace filesystem_x86_rwdi.dll with filesystem_x64_rwdi.dll, or the reverse.
Check the game’s title in the launcher and its installation folder. An original 32-bit release may contain several files with _x86_rwdi.dll names. A newer 64-bit edition may contain _x64_rwdi.dll files instead.
If you installed a remastered or definitive edition but are launching an old shortcut, remove the outdated shortcut and start the game from the current launcher. If you moved the game manually, use the launcher’s Locate, Scan, or Add installed game function if it provides one.
The correct DLL should come from the exact game and edition that is being launched. It should normally remain in the game directory beside the executable.

Fix 5: Remove mods and repair the installation path
Unofficial DLL mods, custom launchers, overlays, and partial game migrations can prevent an old game from loading its private libraries.
- Back up saved games.
- Remove unofficial DLLs and modified engine files from the game folder.
- Temporarily disable launch options and custom compatibility wrappers.
- Verify the game files.
- Start the game through its official launcher.
If the game was installed in a protected or unusual location, reinstall it to a normal local library folder. Avoid running the game from a disconnected network location, a cloud-only folder, or removable storage that is not always available.
A permissions problem can also affect the game’s Documents folder. Check that your Windows account can create files there. If the game crashes after loading rather than reporting a missing file, test it from a new local Windows account. A redirected or inaccessible Documents folder has been associated with some historical reports involving this DLL, but it is an edge case rather than a confirmed general cause.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components
Because this is an application DLL, Windows component repair is less likely to be the direct solution. Use it when several unrelated programs also fail, Windows reports damaged system files, or normal game repair has not helped.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify and launch the game again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If either command reports that it could not complete, restart Windows and run the command again from an administrator Command Prompt. If both complete successfully but only this game still fails, return to repairing or reinstalling the game rather than repeatedly running system scans.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows components and guessing which repair changed the result can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported issues, while its full version performs repairs; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix for this application-local DLL.
Fix 7: Update drivers only for crash-related failures
Driver updates are not the normal fix for a genuinely missing game file. Consider them when the game opens and then crashes, graphics fail, or Event Viewer identifies a graphics or audio component rather than simply reporting that the DLL was not found.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if shown.
- Install the relevant driver and restart Windows.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and relevant peripheral categories.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If a driver update preceded the crash, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available. Remove mods and verify game files before blaming the driver.
Manually checking many hardware vendors can make it difficult to know which driver is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates, while the full version installs them; it is optional and does not replace repairing the game’s original files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
filesystem_x86_rwdi.dll is not a Windows component. Do not place it in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Application-local DLLs are normally loaded from the game directory. Putting a game library in a system folder can create version conflicts and does not repair missing dependencies.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not download an isolated DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide modified files, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the game. A replacement may also conceal the real problem, such as antivirus quarantine or a missing Visual C++ dependency.
Use the game’s official launcher, legitimate installer, or included prerequisite packages instead.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair command
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. This game runtime is not normally repaired by registering it. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 filesystem_x86_rwdi.dll
may produce an entry-point error and will not restore the file or its dependencies.
When the DLL is present but the game still crashes
If Event Viewer names filesystem_x86_rwdi.dll as the faulting module, that is a different problem from a missing-file message.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Find the crash at the relevant time.
- Record the application name, faulting module, exception code, and file path.
- Remove mods and custom launchers.
- Verify the game files.
- Confirm that the Documents folder is available and writable.
- Test the game from a new local Windows account if the crash continues.
A crash inside the DLL can result from incompatible game files, a damaged configuration, permissions, an unavailable Documents path, or an old game running poorly on a modern system. It does not prove that the DLL should be replaced.
FAQ
Is filesystem_x86_rwdi.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an application-local 32-bit game DLL associated with older Techland/RWDI game files.
Which game uses it?
Public manifests confirm it in older Dead Island releases and Call of Juarez: The Cartel. The exact game must be identified from the error, shortcut, launcher, and installation folder.
Can I use the x64 version instead?
No. The x86 and x64 files are for different application architectures and editions.
Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the file is there?
A dependency of the named DLL may be missing. Install the game’s included x86 prerequisites and verify the complete game installation.
Should I install it in System32?
No. Restore it to the game folder through launcher verification or the official installer.
Will SFC or DISM fix this error?
Usually not when only one game is affected. They are appropriate for broader Windows component corruption, while the game’s repair or reinstall is the primary solution.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if antivirus keeps deleting it?
Check Protection history, record the detection, verify that the game came from a trusted source, and restore it only after confirming a false positive. Then verify the game again and use a narrowly scoped exclusion if appropriate.
