filtrator.dll Missing: Repair TC Works Filtrator on Windows

filtrator.dll is missing when Windows or an audio application cannot find the TC Works Filtrator plug-in. filtrator.dll is not a Windows system file, so replacing it with a random copy or placing it in System32 is usually the wrong repair.

Which fix applies to you

Start with the description that matches what happened:

  • The error appeared after uninstalling, moving, or reinstalling Cubase, WaveLab, Nuendo, Logic for Windows, or another VST host: repair or reinstall TC Works Filtrator or the Native Bundle, then rescan the correct VST folder.
  • The file disappeared after Windows Security scanned the computer: check Protection history and restore it only if it came from your original installation.
  • The DLL exists, but a modern 64-bit DAW says it cannot load the plug-in: treat this as a 32-bit compatibility problem, not simply a missing-file problem.
  • The file exists in one VST folder but the host still reports it missing: check the host’s configured plug-in paths and scan log.
  • The problem started after a Windows change and other programs also fail: use System Restore, then DISM and SFC if Windows components appear damaged.
  • You downloaded the DLL from an unofficial site: remove that copy and restore the complete plug-in from original media, a trusted backup, or a legitimate installer.

What filtrator.dll belongs to

filtrator.dll is the Windows plug-in file for TC Works Filtrator, a legacy audio filter developed by TC Works. It was included in the TC Works/TC Electronic Native Bundle 3.0, a collection designed for VST-compatible audio hosts.

Filtrator is not required by Windows itself. It is a synthesizer-style filter effect with features including envelope following, LFO modulation, filter slopes, drive, distortion, and saturation. A DAW loads the DLL as a plug-in when a project or plug-in scan requests it.

The Windows file is identified publicly as a Win32 DLL, which means it is a 32-bit plug-in. The original bundle targeted older Windows releases, including Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. There is no reliable evidence of a native 64-bit build.

That distinction explains why reinstalling the file alone may not solve the problem. A current 64-bit DAW may reject a valid 32-bit DLL unless it provides compatible legacy plug-in support or uses a reputable bridge.

What the error means

You may see wording such as:

  • filtrator.dll is missing
  • filtrator.dll was not found
  • Cannot find filtrator.dll
  • The file filtrator.dll is missing or corrupted
  • The application could not start because filtrator.dll was not found
  • A DAW reports that Filtrator could not be loaded or detected

These messages do not all mean the file has been deleted. A host can report a missing or failed plug-in when:

  • The DLL is not in any configured VST folder.
  • The host is 64-bit and the plug-in is 32-bit.
  • A dependent file is missing or damaged.
  • The host rejected the old plug-in format.
  • Antivirus software quarantined the DLL.
  • The DAW is scanning a different folder than the one containing Filtrator.
  • Several copies exist and the host is loading an incorrect or damaged build.

The next steps distinguish those causes.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the complete TC Works installation

This is the safest and most likely fix. Do not begin by downloading an isolated filtrator.dll. The original installer places the plug-in and any supporting files together and may install it into the VST directory selected during setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the program is installed

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for TC Works, TC Electronic, Native Bundle, or a related audio application.
  5. If it appears, select the three-dot menu and choose Modify, Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
  6. Choose Repair or Change if available.
  7. Confirm that the VST plug-in option is selected.
  8. Note the destination folder shown by the installer.

If the original TC Works entry is not listed, locate the installer on original installation media, an archived installer you obtained legitimately, or a known-good backup. No current official TC Works download for this specific DLL has been identified, so avoid treating a third-party DLL archive as an official source.

Reinstall from original media or a trusted backup

If repair is unavailable:

  1. Back up your DAW projects before changing plug-ins.
  2. Close every audio application.
  3. Run the original Native Bundle or Filtrator installer.
  4. If Windows displays a security prompt, verify that the installer is the one you obtained from your own media or a trusted software source.
  5. Select the VST plug-in component.
  6. Use the plug-in folder expected by your DAW, or record the folder chosen during installation.
  7. Finish the installation.
  8. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  9. Open the DAW and run its plug-in rescan.

Do not copy the repaired file to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those are Windows component folders, not general-purpose VST directories.

Check the DAW’s VST path

The exact menu varies by host, but look for Preferences, Settings, Plug-in Manager, VST Plug-in Paths, or Scan Locations.

Confirm that:

  • The folder containing filtrator.dll is listed.
  • The path is not a backup folder or an old drive letter.
  • The host has permission to read the folder.
  • The plug-in is not disabled or blacklisted.
  • The host has completed a full rescan rather than relying on an old cache.

If the host offers Rescan failed plug-ins, Reset plug-in blacklist, or Clear plug-in cache, use those options after reinstalling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful repair usually makes Filtrator appear in the host’s plug-in list. If the host still rejects it, continue with the architecture checks below.

Fix 2: Check whether a 32-bit plug-in is being loaded by a 64-bit host

filtrator.dll is identified as a 32-bit Win32 plug-in. Current Windows editions can run many older 32-bit applications, but a 64-bit audio host does not automatically load every 32-bit VST DLL.

Confirm the host architecture

Check the DAW’s About window or installation information. Look for wording such as:

Then check whether the application provides built-in support for older 32-bit VST plug-ins. If it does not, your practical choices are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use a legitimate 32-bit version of the host that supports the plug-in.
  2. Use a reputable 32-bit-to-64-bit plug-in bridge compatible with your DAW.
  3. Open older projects in a supported legacy environment and render or bounce the Filtrator tracks.
  4. Replace Filtrator with a supported filter plug-in.

Do not copy a 64-bit DLL from another product and rename it. Do not place the file in SysWOW64 to make a VST host accept it. SysWOW64 is a Windows system directory, and changing the folder does not change the DLL’s architecture.

A 64-bit host may display a generic load, missing-file, or invalid-plug-in message even when the DLL is physically present. The plug-in scan log is the best place to confirm whether the failure is architecture-related.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection history

A security product may quarantine a legacy plug-in if it considers the file unusual or unsafe. This is possible, but the filename alone does not prove that a quarantined copy is safe.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open Windows Security.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Expand any item that references filtrator.dll or the TC Works installation folder.
  7. Check the detection details and original file location.
  8. Restore the file only if you can verify that it came from your original installation media or a known-good backup.
  9. Reinstall the complete bundle afterward if other files were removed.
  10. Run the DAW’s plug-in scan again.

Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the computer at risk. If the file came from an unofficial download, do not restore it merely because its name is filtrator.dll. Replace the entire installation with a verified copy instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows Security repeatedly removes the original file, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection. Do not disable protection permanently just to load an obsolete plug-in.

Fix 4: Search the configured plug-in folders and remove bad duplicates

Older DAWs can have several VST locations, especially after drive upgrades or software migrations. One copy of Filtrator may be valid while another is incomplete, incompatible, or from an untrusted source.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Search the folders configured in your DAW for filtrator.dll.
  3. Record every location found.
  4. Compare those locations with the DAW’s current VST scan paths.
  5. Keep only a verified copy in the intended plug-in directory.
  6. Move untrusted or duplicate copies to a temporary backup folder outside the scan paths.
  7. Do not delete a copy until you have preserved your project files and confirmed which installation is genuine.
  8. Rescan the plug-ins.

The correct location is normally the VST directory selected by the Native Bundle installer or configured in the host. It is not automatically a Windows system directory.

If the file is present but the scan reports a different missing DLL, reinstall the complete Native Bundle. Do not attempt to solve a dependency problem by downloading random supporting files.

Fix 5: Use Windows repair commands only for Windows problems

DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party TC Works plug-in, so use them when Windows itself shows other signs of corruption or when installers fail unexpectedly.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
  3. Restart Windows if requested.

Run SFC

After DISM completes:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  2. Enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Try the TC Works repair or DAW plug-in scan again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the original problem again. If both commands complete successfully but Filtrator remains unavailable, the cause is probably the third-party installation or 32-bit compatibility rather than Windows system corruption.

Repeating these commands will not restore a missing filtrator.dll.

When manually comparing Windows components and repeating repair commands becomes confusing, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it identifies in a scan; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling TC Works Filtrator.

Fix 6: Restore Windows to an earlier state

Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a driver installation, software change, or Windows configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the programs and drivers that may be removed or reverted.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally changes installed programs, drivers, and system settings without removing personal documents. It does not guarantee that an old plug-in will run in a newer 64-bit DAW. If the error remains, reinstall the complete Native Bundle and check the host architecture.

Fix 7: Check audio drivers only when the host reports a driver problem

An audio driver does not normally provide filtrator.dll, and updating a sound card driver will not recreate the plug-in. Check drivers only if the DAW also reports that its audio device cannot initialize, the audio engine will not start, or the problem began after an audio-driver change.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the relevant audio device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. Reopen the DAW and test its audio engine.

For a manufacturer-specific driver, obtain it from the audio interface or computer manufacturer rather than a generic driver archive. If the update causes problems, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually hunting through driver versions and repeating updates without knowing which device changed can make audio troubleshooting harder. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers in a scan; driver installation through the full version is optional, and it will not replace the definitive TC Works reinstall.

Why regsvr32 usually does not fix Filtrator

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose Windows registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer or DllInstall. VST effect plug-ins are normally discovered and loaded by the audio host, not registered as COM or ActiveX components.

Running this command is therefore not a recommended repair:

regsvr32 filtrator.dll

It may produce an entry-point or registration error, and that result does not prove the file is missing. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration utility, not as a general DLL repair tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a vendor’s installer explicitly instructs you to register a component, follow that installer’s instructions. Otherwise, use the DAW’s plug-in scan and reinstall the complete bundle.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Do not download filtrator.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into a Windows folder. That approach can fail because the file may have:

  • Malware or unwanted code.
  • The wrong build.
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • Missing companion files.
  • A damaged or altered binary.
  • An incompatible version that breaks old projects.

A filename and a reported file hash on an unofficial site do not establish authenticity. The safe sources are your original TC Works installation media, a backup made from a known-good installation, or a legitimate installer obtained through an authorized software channel. Restore the complete application or bundle whenever possible.

When to stop repairing and replace the plug-in

If the original installer completes, the verified DLL is in the correct VST folder, and the host still rejects it, the plug-in may simply be incompatible with your current setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is especially likely when:

  • The DAW is 64-bit with no legacy VST support.
  • The plug-in scan identifies the file as 32-bit.
  • The old installer cannot run on the current Windows edition.
  • A project depends on an obsolete plug-in format.
  • The file loads in an older host but not in the current host.

Preserve the original projects before removing Filtrator. If possible, open them in a compatible legacy host and render or bounce tracks that use the effect. Then migrate those tracks to a supported filter plug-in. Removing the old DLL from the scan path can prevent repeated scan errors, but it may cause projects that depend on Filtrator to open without that effect.

Frequently asked questions

Is filtrator.dll part of Windows?

No. It belongs to TC Works Filtrator, a legacy audio VST plug-in. Windows does not need it for normal operation.

Which applications use it?

VST hosts such as older versions of Cubase, WaveLab, Nuendo, Logic for Windows, and similar DAWs may scan or load it. The exact host depends on where the TC Works bundle was installed.

Should I put it in System32?

No. Put a verified copy in the VST plug-in directory used by the audio host. System32 and SysWOW64 are not general plug-in folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a 64-bit version?

Public evidence identifies the Windows file as 32-bit. No reliable evidence establishes a native 64-bit build.

Why does the error appear even though the file exists?

The host may be scanning another folder, rejecting the 32-bit architecture, failing to load a dependency, or using a cached failed-scan result.

Can SFC restore it?

No. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not normally restore third-party TC Works files.

Was the file deleted by antivirus?

It is possible if the file disappeared after a scan. Check Windows Security Protection history, and restore only a verified original copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if reinstalling the DAW does not help?

Reinstall the complete TC Works Native Bundle or Filtrator installation, verify the VST path, inspect the host’s scan log, and check whether the host is 64-bit. Reinstalling the DAW alone may not reinstall an independently installed legacy plug-in.

Is filtrator.dll malware?

The name is associated with legitimate TC Works software, but a filename alone cannot prove that a particular copy is genuine. Verify its provenance and scan any restored file before using it.
