python20.dll Missing: Restore the Original Program on Windows

Windows may show “The program can’t start because python20.dll is missing from your computer,” “python20.dll was not found,” or “Error loading python20.dll. The specified module could not be found.”

python20.dll is the Python 2.0 core runtime associated with the historical BeOpen Python distribution. It is not a Windows system file, and the safest fix is normally to repair or reinstall the old application that owns it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The 60-second fix

  1. Note the name of the program showing the error.
  2. Do not download python20.dll from a DLL website or copy it into System32.
  3. Open the program’s installation folder and confirm which application is missing the file.
  4. Use that program’s Repair, Verify files, or Reinstall option.
  5. Check Windows Security’s quarantine history in case the file was removed.
  6. If the program is a standalone Python 2.0 installation, restore it with the archived official Python-2.0.1.exe installer.
  7. Restart Windows and launch the original program again.

If only one old application reports the error, repairing that application is much more likely to work than changing Windows or installing a modern Python release.

What is python20.dll

python20.dll is the core DLL for Python 2.0 on Windows. The Python 2.0 Windows installer used a versioned installation directory such as C:Python20, while an application that embedded Python could keep the DLL inside its own program folder.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.

The file is associated with the historical BeOpen.com and BeOpen PythonLabs distribution. It is not part of Windows and does not normally belong in:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64
  • A general Windows system directory

Historical evidence identifies this runtime as a 32-bit Microsoft C runtime build. That matters because a 32-bit application needs the compatible 32-bit runtime. A later file with the same general purpose, including python27.dll, python39.dll, or python311.dll, is not a substitute for python20.dll.

Modern Python installers, Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET generally do not install this file.

Identify the program that needs the DLL

The filename alone cannot identify the exact application. It could belong to:

  • An old Python application
  • A program that embedded Python
  • A Python extension
  • A legacy engineering, graphics, media, or business application
  • A game or launcher that included an older Python component

Start with the error dialog. Record the application name and the action that triggered it. Then check the program’s shortcut:

  1. Right-click the shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field.
  5. Note the folder containing the executable.

You can also identify the owner through File Explorer:

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Browse to the installation directory.
  3. Look for the program executable and nearby Python files.
  4. Do not move, rename, or replace anything yet.

If the error appears during startup, check whether the original application has already been removed. A stale shortcut, scheduled task, or startup entry may still be trying to launch it. In that situation, remove the leftover startup reference or uninstall the remaining parent program instead of installing the DLL merely to silence the message.

For more detail, Event Viewer may show the failing executable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  4. Look for an error recorded at the time the program failed.
  5. Check the Faulting application name and Faulting module name fields.

The module name may still be python20.dll, but the faulting application identifies the program that should be repaired.

Fix 1: Repair the application

Repairing the owning application restores its expected folder structure, runtime files, and dependencies.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the program producing the error.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair if available.
  7. Start the application again.

The repair should finish without deleting personal settings. If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you are prepared for the program to lose stored settings or data.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Apps & features.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Choose Advanced options if shown.
  5. Select Repair.

Some traditional desktop applications use Control Panel instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Repair, Change, or Modify.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.

After repair, restart Windows and open the program from its normal shortcut. If it starts without the DLL message, the repair restored the correct runtime.

Verify files in a launcher

For launcher-managed software, use the launcher’s own Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity command. This is preferable to copying a DLL manually because the launcher can restore the complete application package and check related files.

If verification reports damaged files but cannot repair them, uninstall and reinstall the exact program from its publisher or trusted original media.

Fix 2: Reinstall the exact application

If repair is unavailable or fails, reinstall the program that produced the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up the program’s documents, profiles, saved games, or configuration files.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Install the same application from its official installer or original media.
  7. Launch it before adding plugins or changing its configuration.

For older desktop software, the uninstall entry may instead be in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

Do not assume that reinstalling Python 2.7 or Python 3 will repair a program linked specifically to python20.dll. Python runtimes use version-specific DLL names, and an application compiled for Python 2.0 may require that exact historical runtime.

If the application embeds Python privately, installing Python separately may have no effect. The program may load its own DLL relative to its executable, so the application’s complete installer is the correct repair source.

Fix 3: Restore standalone Python 2.0

Use this step only when the error belongs to a standalone historical Python installation rather than another application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official historical package is Python-2.0.1.exe. Restore it from the archived official Python release page or from verified original installation media.

  1. Remove the damaged standalone Python 2.0 installation only if its installer or uninstaller is still available.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Run the official Python-2.0.1.exe installer.
  4. Keep the installer’s original destination unless the application specifically expects another path.
  5. Complete the installation.
  6. Start the original Python program or extension again.

The archive also contains a debug ZIP package intended for Windows developers. It is not the normal choice for an ordinary user trying to launch an application.

A standalone Python reinstall will not necessarily fix an embedded application. If the error comes from a separate product, reinstall that product instead.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old DLL, particularly when it is found in an unusual application directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Choose Protection history.
  5. Review entries created when the application failed.
  6. Expand a detection to see its original file path and action.
  7. Restore the file only if you have verified the application, installer source, location, and complete program.

Microsoft warns that allowing a detected file can expose the device if it is genuinely malicious. Do not restore a DLL found in a temporary download folder or an unrelated system directory merely because its filename matches.

After restoring a verified file, scan the entire application folder and reinstall the program from its original source if the detection is uncertain. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, stop launching the program and investigate the detection rather than adding exclusions immediately.

Fix 5: Resolve architecture and dependency problems

A missing-file message does not always mean that python20.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load the DLL because another dependency is missing, damaged, or incompatible.

The historical Python 2.0 Windows runtime was 32-bit. Check the application’s architecture and use the runtime supplied with that application. A 64-bit DLL cannot replace the expected 32-bit build, and a random 32-bit DLL may still export different functions or belong to a different distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common clues include:

  • The file exists, but the program still reports it as missing.
  • The message says “The specified module could not be found.”
  • The message says “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
  • The program closes immediately after launch.
  • Windows reports “python20.dll is not designed to run on Windows” or a “Bad Image” error.

For these failures:

  1. Do not rename another Python DLL to python20.dll.
  2. Do not copy the file between unrelated applications.
  3. Do not mix files from different Python releases.
  4. Repair or reinstall the complete application.
  5. If necessary, have a qualified technician inspect the application’s dependency chain with a reputable diagnostic tool.

A “Bad Image” message usually points to corruption, wrong architecture, or a file that is not the expected Windows executable format. Replacing the complete runtime from the original installer is safer than trying individual DLL files.

Fix 6: Update a related application or driver

A normal graphics, printer, chipset, or other device driver does not normally install python20.dll. Update drivers only when the affected program depends on a specific device and the problem began after a hardware or driver change.

To check a device driver:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Printers.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

If the problem began immediately after an update:

  1. Right-click the device in Device Manager.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Driver tab.
  4. Choose Roll Back Driver if available.
  5. Restart and test the original program.

Manually matching drivers across many hardware models can mean hunting versions and guessing which component changed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns python20.dll.

Do not install a driver package simply because the DLL error mentions Python. First establish a connection between the application and the affected device.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is failing

Because python20.dll is a third-party application runtime, Windows system repair tools will not normally restore it. Use them when several unrelated Windows programs are failing, Windows components are corrupted, or the problem affects more than the application that owns the DLL.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Choose Yes at the User Account Control prompt.

Run DISM first:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish, then run System File Checker:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows and test the original application.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the application repair or reinstall rather than expecting SFC to supply python20.dll.

Running these commands repeatedly will not replace a missing private application file. Outbyte PC Repair can show what Windows repair issues are present and perform repairs with its full version, but it is optional; the owning program’s official installer remains the correct source for this DLL.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore can help when the error began immediately after an application installation, update, driver change, or system configuration change.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point, although it preserves personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, return to repairing or reinstalling the application.

Do not use System32, SysWOW64, or regsvr32

Copying python20.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not a general repair. It can create version conflicts, leave the application with the wrong dependency path, and increase DLL hijacking risk.

Do not run:

regsvr32 python20.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration interface, typically COM or ActiveX components. The Python core runtime is not normally registered that way. Registration will not repair a missing, corrupted, incompatible, or dependency-blocked Python runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

A downloaded file with the right name may still be:

  • The wrong Python release
  • The wrong architecture
  • Built for a different application
  • Missing required dependencies
  • Modified or malicious
  • Unable to provide the functions the program expects

It can also hide the real problem, such as a damaged installation or a quarantined group of files.

Use the original application installer, the application publisher’s repair or verification system, verified installation media, or the archived official Python 2.0.1 installer for a genuine standalone Python 2.0 installation.

If the software is abandoned

For obsolete software, safer options may include:

  • Restoring a complete backup of the application directory
  • Reinstalling from verified original media
  • Running the software in a compatible older Windows environment
  • Using a virtual machine with appropriate isolation
  • Replacing the application with a maintained product

Do not place a historical runtime in a system directory to make an abandoned program start. Preserve the complete application and its matching runtime together.

Frequently asked questions

Is python20.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with the Python 2.0 runtime and is not normally protected or installed by Windows.

Is python20.dll the same as python27.dll or python311.dll?

No. The names identify different Python runtime generations. A program linked to python20.dll should receive its compatible Python 2.0 runtime, not a renamed or substituted modern DLL.

Where should python20.dll be located?

It should normally be in the owning application’s directory or a historical Python installation directory such as C:Python20. It does not normally belong in System32 or SysWOW64.

Can I download python20.dll by itself?

Do not use an unverified DLL download. Restore the complete application or use the archived official Python 2.0.1 installer when the standalone Python installation is genuinely the owner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the program say a module is missing when python20.dll is visible?

Windows may be unable to load one of python20.dll’s dependencies. Repairing the complete application is safer than adding unrelated runtime packages or copying additional DLLs.

Will reinstalling Python fix the error?

Only if the standalone Python installation is the program that needs the file. An application with an embedded Python runtime may ignore a separate Python installation and require its own repair or reinstall.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET?

Not as a first response. Those packages generally do not install python20.dll. Install a dependency only when the application’s official requirements identify it or a diagnostic confirms that it is missing.

What does “python20.dll is not designed to run on Windows” mean?

It usually indicates corruption, an incompatible architecture, or an invalid file. Replace the complete application or runtime from its original source rather than registering the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error started after upgrading Python?

Python 2.0 and later releases use version-specific DLL names. An extension or application built for Python 2.0 may fail after an upgrade removes or replaces its expected runtime. Restore the application’s compatible runtime or install a vendor update.
