For players asking which Final Fantasy games let you explore freely, Final Fantasy XII is the clearest released example in the official sources: a new skystone for the Strahl unlocks free travel around the world. Final Fantasy VII Revelation promises broader free flight through the Highwind, but that feature is announced for a game scheduled for Spring 2027, not confirmed in a released version.
That distinction matters: some Final Fantasy airships are transport between destinations, while others are tied to world exploration. Here is what Square Enix’s descriptions establish—and where they do not.
Which Final Fantasy games let you explore freely by airship?

How to compare airship freedom
An airship’s presence alone does not tell you whether you can steer it around a world. Four questions clarify the difference:
- Scope: Does it cover a whole planet, a world map, one region, or only set routes?
- Control: Do you pilot the craft directly, or select a destination and travel there?
- Access: When does the craft become usable, and what must happen first?
- Landing and exploration: Where can you land, and what can you explore after getting there?
The sources establish a free-travel unlock for the Strahl and an announced planet-wide Highwind feature. They do not provide enough detail to compare flight controls, exact access timing, or landing rules across all the named games.

What the other famous Final Fantasy craft establish
Square Enix’s January 2022 roundup notes that the Final Fantasy I airship is buried and requires a special item, that the Final Fantasy IV Lunar Whale enables travel to the moon with the Crystal of Flight, and that the Final Fantasy IX Invincible is connected to antagonist Kuja. These are useful story and vehicle details, but they do not establish how freely players can pilot or navigate those craft.

In its Aug. 27, 2026 announcement, Square Enix said the entire planet would be freely explorable via the Highwind and that players could parachute down anywhere, transitioning from air to land. The announcement lists a Spring 2027 release window for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Those are announced features and platforms, not confirmation from a released build.
