For Final Fantasy IX on Steam, start a crash, startup failure, or black-screen diagnosis by verifying the game files. If the game crashes during play, check display settings, graphics drivers, security software, and peripherals; if a controller is the problem, first confirm whether you own the Steam or Windows 10/11 edition. These are Square Enix’s suggested checks, not guaranteed fixes.
First identify the edition and the symptom
The official troubleshooting guidance differs by issue and, for controllers, by PC edition. Identify whether you have the Steam edition or the Windows 10/11 version, then match the problem to the relevant path:
- Crash, failure to start, or black screen: verify Steam installation files if you play the Steam edition.
- Crash during gameplay: try the display, driver, security-software, and peripheral checks below.
- Controller input or navigation trouble: check the edition’s supported input standard and remember that gamepad support is partial.
- The entire PC crashes, powers off, or shows a blue screen: treat this as system-level instability, not automatically as a game-only crash.
Fix a crash, startup failure, or black screen
Verify the Steam installation
Square Enix recommends validating the installation when the Windows PC version crashes, will not start, or displays a black screen. In Steam, use this path:
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click FINAL FANTASY IX and select Properties.
- Open Local Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let Steam complete the check.
This checks whether the installation files are present and properly installed; it does not establish that every possible cause has been ruled out. If the problem continues, Square Enix advises contacting its support team.

Fix crashes during gameplay
Square Enix lists the following checks for a Steam gameplay crash. Its guidance does not rank them by likelihood of success, so try them as practical troubleshooting steps rather than guaranteed remedies.
Change display mode and resolution
- Switch between windowed and fullscreen mode.
- Reduce the game’s resolution and check whether the crash recurs.
Check drivers, security software, and peripherals
- Update your graphics driver.
- Check whether security software or a firewall is monitoring or blocking the game. Make changes only if appropriate for your security setup.
- Temporarily disconnect peripheral devices and see whether the issue changes.
Confirm the game is current and restart
For a general PC crash, Square Enix also recommends confirming that the game is on the latest version and restarting the PC. If the checks do not help, reinstalling the game is another vendor-recommended step.

When the whole PC crashes or shows a blue screen
A game closing to the desktop is different from Windows crashing, the computer powering off, or a blue screen appearing. Square Enix says a system-level failure may be hardware-related. The symptom alone does not prove that the game caused the underlying instability.
If you contact Square Enix support about a general PC crash, its guidance asks you to provide Msinfo and Dxdiag diagnostic files. Follow the support page’s directions for generating and submitting them.

Why a controller may not work as expected
Check the PC edition before changing controller settings: Square Enix lists different input-standard support for Steam and the Windows 10/11 version.

“Partially supported” does not mean every model or every function is guaranteed to work. Square Enix warns that players may need a keyboard and mouse to navigate part of the game, even when using a supported controller type.

If you need an input device, an Xbox controller for PC is a reasonable category to consider, but the support information does not promise full compatibility for every model. Buying a controller is not a documented fix for crashes or black screens.
