Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster vs. Original Versions: What Changed?

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster keeps the six NES- and Super NES-era stories intact, but rebuilds their presentation and several parts of the play experience for current hardware. You get redrawn high-resolution pixel art, newly arranged music, recreated sound effects, a redesigned interface, faster repeat actions and optional ways to reduce grinding. It is a modernization of the original releases—not a package containing every feature from every later remake.

The practical choice is simple: buy Pixel Remaster if you want the original adventures with cleaner presentation and adjustable convenience features. Choose an original release or an older port only if a specific bonus dungeon, character, class, item, soundtrack version or other addition from that port matters more to you than the remaster’s unified presentation.

What Pixel Remaster actually is

The Pixel Remaster line covers six Final Fantasy games first released during the NES and Super NES era. Square Enix rebuilt their graphics, audio and interface while preserving the underlying stories. The publisher’s FAQ states: “No changes have been made to the stories.” That means the narrative, settings and major sequence of events are intended to remain the same as in the original versions.

It is important to define the starting point correctly. Pixel Remaster is based on the original Nintendo and Super Nintendo releases, not on a “best of” version assembled from every subsequent port. Earlier releases for systems such as the Game Boy Advance, PSP, WonderSwan or later 3D remakes sometimes added quests, bosses, playable characters, classes, spells, items, endings or other material. Square Enix did not bring all of those additions forward. The remasters add their own presentation and convenience features instead.

Because the six games were rebuilt as a family, they share a visual language, menu approach and set of optional controls that the original cartridges did not. That consistency is the central change: you are still playing the original six adventures in scope and story, but through a modernized layer.

Graphics: original sprite character, rebuilt for modern screens

The most visible difference is the art. Pixel Remaster redraws the game graphics in an updated 2D pixel style rather than simply enlarging the original NES or Super NES assets. Playable characters were redrawn by Kazuko Shibuya, who also worked on the classic games. Square Enix says the aim was to preserve the feel of the original pixel sprites while making them display cleanly on high-resolution screens.

That approach produces sharper edges, more readable silhouettes and a consistent scale on current televisions, monitors and phones. It is not a museum-accurate dump of the original tiles: proportions, color choices, effects and some environmental details have been reworked. The result is best understood as a new interpretation constrained by the original pixel vocabulary.

Original hardware output has its own look. NES and Super NES video was designed around lower resolutions, fixed palettes and displays that naturally softened edges. On modern televisions, an untouched image may appear blurred, heavily scaled or surrounded by borders unless an emulator or hardware adapter applies a particular scaling mode. Pixel Remaster instead supplies assets intended for contemporary resolutions, so the default presentation is cleaner without requiring a specialized display setup.

Whether the redrawn sprites are preferable is a matter of taste. Players who value historical accuracy may prefer the exact original tiles; players who want legibility and a uniform appearance across all six games will generally find the remaster easier to read. Square Enix’s preservation language describes its intent, not an objective verdict about which art is better.

Music and sound: rearranged tracks, with original-style options on supported versions

The soundtracks were rearranged under original composer Nobuo Uematsu’s oversight. Square Enix’s stated themes for the arrangements were “following tradition” and “proper evolution.” Melodies and identities remain recognizable, but instrumentation, dynamics, layering and transitions are presented as modern arrangements rather than direct playback of the original console sound chips.

Sound effects were recreated by Square Enix’s sound team. Consequently, menu clicks, attacks, spells and environmental sounds can differ as much as the music does. The change is systemic: Pixel Remaster is not merely using the old audio files under new graphics.

Music selection depends on the platform. The PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch releases provide selectable rearranged or original-based music. After the update released on 31 January 2024, Steam added an original-BGM switch as well. The phrase “original-based” should not be read as a promise that every platform reproduces the exact electrical behavior of an NES or Super NES sound chip; it describes the alternate soundtrack option supplied by that release.

Interface and play flow: the largest day-to-day improvement

Pixel Remaster replaces the original menu presentation with a redesigned interface that is easier to navigate with a modern controller, keyboard or touch screen. The series also adds tools that reduce the friction of repeating routine actions:

  • Auto-battle: repeat commands during encounters instead of selecting every action manually.
  • Easier saving: the modern save flow is less restrictive than the original cartridge-era experience.
  • Bestiary: review encountered enemies and related information in one place.
  • Illustration gallery: view collected artwork associated with the game.
  • Music player: listen to the soundtrack from the game menus.

These additions alter convenience, not the stories. Auto-battle can make routine fights less laborious, while the bestiary, gallery and music player add reference and collection functions that were not part of the original releases. The original games’ menus and save limitations remain historically interesting, but they are no longer the only way to experience the adventures in this line.

Optional controls for encounters and experience

Modern versions also let you tune the amount of routine combat. The PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch releases include encounter disabling and an experience multiplier ranging from 0× to 4×. Setting encounters off can help when backtracking or exploring a familiar route; increasing experience can shorten a deliberate leveling session. A 0× setting prevents experience gain while fights still occur, which is useful for players imposing a challenge or controlling a party’s level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On 31 January 2024, Square Enix added encounter on/off and the 0×–4× experience multiplier to the Steam and mobile versions. That update also added a pixel-font option and original-BGM switch on Steam, plus gamepad support on mobile. Feature parity therefore depends on both platform and patch version. Do not assume that a setting visible on a console is present on an unupdated phone build, or that every font and music option appears on every device.

Balance: adjusted, but not a blanket difficulty redesign

Square Enix says overall game balance received tweaks and adjustments while respecting the originals. That wording supports a cautious conclusion: numbers and progression may not be identical in every case, but the company did not present Pixel Remaster as a universal easy mode or a universal hard mode.

There is no single difficulty verdict that accurately describes all six games. A player may notice a smoother progression curve in one title, a different rhythm for another, or simply less downtime because of auto-battle and multipliers. Those are separate questions. Convenience options can make a game faster without changing its default combat rules, while balance adjustments can change encounters even when the player never touches an optional setting.

If you want a run close to the original pacing, leave encounter and experience controls at their default values, avoid auto-battle when making tactical decisions and use the standard arranged or original-based audio choice offered by your platform. If you are replaying for the story or testing a late-game area, the optional controls let you spend less time on routine battles without modifying the narrative.

Content scope: what is missing from earlier ports

The most common buying mistake is assuming that “remaster” means “every version combined.” Pixel Remaster does not include all content introduced by previous remakes. The baseline is the original NES/SNES release for each game, with the remaster’s own graphics, sound, interface and convenience additions layered on top.

Depending on the title and the port being used as a comparison, omitted material can include bonus dungeons, additional bosses, extra equipment, new spells, expanded bestiaries, optional scenes or other post-release adjustments. The exact list differs by game and by the older version you have in mind, so a claim that Pixel Remaster is either universally “complete” or universally “cut down” is misleading.

Pixel Remaster does add content of its own in the form of the illustration gallery and music player, alongside the new control options. Those additions are presentation and usability features rather than replacement story arcs. If a particular bonus quest from a Game Boy Advance, PSP, WonderSwan or 3D remake is the reason you want to replay one entry, verify that port separately before purchasing the remaster.

Platform differences after the 31 January 2024 update

The following matrix separates features by release family. “Not stated” means Square Enix’s published feature information does not establish that option for the platform; it is not a claim that the option can never exist in a later patch.

PlayStation 4 Selectable rearranged or original-based music Default or pixel font Disable encounters 0× to 4× Console feature set documented for the release
Nintendo Switch Selectable rearranged or original-based music Default or pixel font Disable encounters 0× to 4× Console feature set documented for the release
Steam, after 31 January 2024 Rearranged music or original-BGM switch Pixel-font option On/off 0× to 4× Feature update released 31 January 2024

Before comparing screenshots or menus, check the installed version and the platform store description for your region. A feature documented for a patched release is not evidence that an older physical or mobile build has it automatically. Console and PC options can also be exposed through different menu layouts, even when the underlying setting is equivalent.

How faithful is Pixel Remaster to the originals?

Stories and overall identity

On the point most players mean by “faithful,” the answer is strong: Square Enix says the stories were not changed. The games retain their original narrative identities rather than being rewritten as modern role-playing games.

Visual and audio intent

The presentation is faithful in direction, not in literal assets. The redrawn sprites preserve the intended pixel character while changing the artwork; the soundtrack arrangements follow the original themes while changing the performances; recreated effects replace the old sound set. Calling the remaster an exact audiovisual replica would therefore be inaccurate.

Rules and pacing

Balance tweaks, auto-battle, encounter controls and experience multipliers can change how quickly a playthrough moves. Those systems are optional where the platform provides a switch, but their presence means the remaster offers a broader range of pacing than the cartridge versions. A self-imposed “classic” run can approximate the old rhythm, yet it cannot turn the redrawn assets and new arrangements back into the original files.

A practical checklist before buying

  1. Identify the content you want. Write down whether your priority is the six original stories, a specific later-port bonus, exact original audio, or modern convenience. This prevents the word “remaster” from hiding a content mismatch.
  2. Choose the platform first. If encounter control, experience multipliers, font selection or music switching matters, use the platform matrix above and confirm the installed patch.
  3. Decide how much historical accuracy you need. Pixel Remaster preserves the design and stories but not the original art files, sound effects or soundtrack performances.
  4. Plan your settings. Leave optional controls at their defaults for a closer approximation of the original pacing; use auto-battle, encounter toggles or multipliers when reducing repetition is more important.
  5. Check the exact older version if bonus content is essential. A Game Boy Advance, PSP, WonderSwan or 3D-remake feature should be confirmed in that release’s own documentation rather than assumed to be present in Pixel Remaster.
  6. Confirm practical availability. For a physical collection, check the current region, platform, seller, stock and price immediately before ordering.

Common misconceptions

“Pixel Remaster is just an emulator with filters.”

No. The graphics were redrawn, the soundtrack was rearranged, sound effects were recreated and the interface was rebuilt. The remaster is a new presentation of the original games, not a filtered dump of cartridge assets.

“It contains every version’s bonus content.”

No. Its content baseline is the original Nintendo and Super Nintendo releases. Some additions from earlier remakes are omitted, even though Pixel Remaster supplies galleries, a music player and modern control options.

“Every platform has exactly the same settings.”

No. Console releases, Steam and mobile received different documented options at different times. Steam and mobile received a major feature update on 31 January 2024, and the update did not describe identical font, music or controller features for both platforms.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

“The remaster is always easier.”

That conclusion is too broad. Square Enix describes balance tweaks and adjustments, while optional encounter and experience settings can independently reduce or increase the amount of routine play. Difficulty should be judged by the individual game, the chosen settings and the player’s preferred pacing.

Bottom line

Pixel Remaster is the most coherent modern way to play the six NES/SNES-era Final Fantasy adventures when you value readable high-resolution pixel art, supervised soundtrack rearrangements, a redesigned interface and optional control over repetition. It remains faithful to the original stories and overall identity, but it is not the definitive container for every later port. Buy it for a polished, adjustable modernization; choose an older version only when its exclusive bonus content or exact original presentation is your priority.
