There is no officially prescribed “best” job order in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. For a strong start, prioritize jobs that cover different party needs—reliable frontline presence, ranged or magical options, and useful support—then invest in abilities you want to carry into other roles. Square Enix says learned abilities remain usable after changing jobs, so early development can pay off beyond the class a character is using now.
How to choose the best jobs to master straight away
“Best” depends on what your party lacks and how much development you want to put into a role. Square Enix describes more than 20 jobs and over 300 character abilities, with distinct job skill kits that can be customized using abilities learned elsewhere. That breadth makes job choice a way to shape a roster, not a single correct build.
The key flexibility is ability portability. On its official game page, Square Enix says: “Once learned, abilities can be used even after changing to another job.” In practice, that makes a job worth considering not only for what its character can do while assigned to it, but also for abilities you may want available in a later build.
The recommendations below are editorial priorities based on party role, potential cross-job value, and the effort involved in committing to a direction. They are not an official ranking, verified unlock sequence, or claim that every job is available at the same point in the story.

Start with coverage, not a fixed build
Before specializing, look at what your active party can and cannot handle. A balanced early direction usually means having characters suited to direct combat, options for attacking from a different position or with magic, and at least one character whose development supports flexible builds. Treat these as roles to cover, rather than jobs every character must master.
- Frontline: Keep characters able to engage enemies directly and hold their place in a fight.
- Reach and mobility: Include a character who can contribute when straightforward close-range positioning is inconvenient.
- Magic: Develop a magical option if you want a different way to approach enemies and party situations.
- Flexibility: Invest in an ability set you may want to use after changing a character’s job.
Jobs to consider early, by party need
Black Mage: a magic-focused direction
Consider Black Mage if you want a clear magical role alongside characters focused on direct combat. Square Enix lists Black Mage among the game’s jobs, but its official materials do not identify it as the strongest early job or specify an ability or unlock order. Choose it because your roster needs a magic-focused option, not because it is a mandatory first investment.
Time Mage: a utility-minded magic path
Time Mage is a natural alternative when you want a magical role with a different emphasis. Square Enix describes Time Mages as using time magick. The publisher does not provide a job-by-job ranking or detail the exact early abilities here, so treat this as a direction to explore rather than a guaranteed power upgrade over another magic job.
Dragoon: a distinct combat option
Dragoon is one of the jobs Square Enix names in its official announcement. It can be a candidate when you want a combat-focused character whose job kit differs from the rest of your party. The official sources cited here do not establish specific early performance, required job levels, or a best time to pursue it; consider it for variety and role fit rather than an asserted early-game advantage.

Geomancer: a situational, environment-aware choice
Square Enix describes Geomancers as using the environment. That makes Geomancer worth considering if you want a job with a distinct approach to combat, especially when you are experimenting with how the setting can shape a character’s contribution. The publisher does not state that it is universally effective on every map or give a verified unlock sequence.
Summoner: a specialized magic direction
Summoner appears among the jobs highlighted by Square Enix. It is a reasonable path to explore if you want a specialized magical role rather than simply duplicating another character’s approach. Official materials do not supply comparative damage figures, specific early abilities, or a claim that Summoner should be prioritized over Black Mage or Time Mage.
Compare your options before investing
| Job | Role indicated by official material | Why consider it early | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Mage | Magic-focused job; listed by Square Enix | Adds a distinct magical direction to a roster built around other roles | Specific early skills, unlock requirements, or superiority over other jobs |
| Time Mage | Uses time magick, according to Square Enix | Offers a different magical direction to explore | Exact early abilities, unlock timing, or an official ranking |
| Dragoon | Job named by Square Enix | Provides another distinct job kit for a combat-oriented build | Specific early performance, requirements, or optimal timing |
| Geomancer | Uses the environment, according to Square Enix | Offers an environment-aware approach to party composition | Map-by-map effectiveness, exact abilities, or unlock order |
| Summoner | Job named by Square Enix | Provides a specialized path for a character you want to develop around magic | Comparative power, early abilities, or priority relative to other magic jobs |
This comparison reflects the scope of Square Enix’s published descriptions; it is not a performance chart. Because the official sources do not establish exact job requirements or early unlock timing, use the jobs you can access and the needs of your current party to guide investment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical early progression approach
- Identify the gap. Look at your party and decide whether you most need a magic-focused role, a different combat option, or a more flexible character.
- Pick one job direction for that character. Use the job’s role and skill kit as a reason to experiment, not as a promise that it is objectively best.
- Invest with portability in mind. Since Square Enix says learned abilities can be used after changing jobs, consider whether the abilities you are working toward will matter to the character’s later build too.
- Change course when the roster calls for it. Reassess as your party changes. A job that fills a useful gap now does not have to become a permanent assignment.
The benefit of this approach is that it avoids overcommitting to an unsupported “meta” route. The trade-off is that it cannot tell you the exact fastest unlock path: the official materials cited here do not publish one.

What the official guidance does—and does not—settle
Square Enix’s June 6, 2025 announcement says the game includes more than 20 jobs and over 300 character abilities. Its official game page describes hundreds of abilities and confirms that learned abilities can remain usable after a job change. Those points support experimenting with combinations and building characters for more than one role.
They do not establish an official best-job ranking, exact job requirements, specific ability names, or a verified early progression order. The recommendations here are therefore role-based starting points, not claims of developer-endorsed balance or firsthand testing.
