Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is the strongest choice for newcomers who want a more accessible, voiced presentation of the classic tactical RPG, while its Classic mode gives returning players a way to revisit the older presentation and gameplay. Enhanced adds a revised script, full voice acting, visual and interface updates, and useful battle options; Classic preserves the original graphics and gameplay with the War of the Lions translation. The trade-off is straightforward: choose Enhanced for its modern conveniences, or Classic if fidelity to the older version matters more than those additions.
What this release includes
Released on September 30, 2025, The Ivalice Chronicles is a two-mode re-release of Final Fantasy Tactics, the turn-based strategy RPG set in Ivalice. Its central appeal is the contrast between a substantially updated presentation in Enhanced mode and a Classic mode designed to preserve the older game’s graphics and gameplay.

Enhanced or Classic: which should you play?
| Mode | Presentation and text | What it adds or preserves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enhanced | Revised and enriched script with full voice acting; improved graphics and updated UI, according to Square Enix. | Additional conversations and quality-of-life features, including difficulty settings, tactical view, a turn-order display, fast-forward, and battle autosave. | Players who want a more approachable first playthrough, voiced scenes, and modern battle conveniences. |
| Classic | Original-style graphics and the War of the Lions translation; TechRadar describes its text as the 2007 PSP version’s translation. | Recreates the 1997 release’s graphics and gameplay, as described by Square Enix. | Returning players who prefer the older presentation and its translation, or anyone who wants to experience the preserved version. |
Square Enix specifically presents the Squire difficulty setting as a more accessible option for first-time players. Tactical view helps you scout the battlefield, while turn order, fast-forward, and autosave can make battles easier to read and manage. These are practical changes to how a long strategy campaign feels; they do not replace its emphasis on planning and positioning. (Square Enix feature announcement)

If you already own Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, the main reason to revisit the story here is Enhanced mode’s new presentation and conveniences. If what you value is the older text and familiar look, Classic is the more relevant draw. The available descriptions establish the modes’ feature differences, but do not provide a basis for declaring one translation objectively better.
How the battles and character progression work
Combat is turn-based and terrain-aware: where a unit stands, how it faces, and how the battlefield is arranged all matter to a plan. The game’s job and ability systems let you develop units in different directions and combine abilities to make a party suited to your approach. That flexibility is the heart of the tactical appeal, but it also means battles reward attention to positioning and preparation rather than treating every encounter as a simple exchange of attacks.

Square Enix lists more than 20 jobs and more than 300 abilities. Examples include black mage, dragoon, geomancer, summoner, time mage, and thief; the publisher says learned abilities can be combined to shape party strategies. Those counts are the publisher’s feature figures, not independently measured statistics. (Square Enix feature announcement)

The story unfolds in the war-torn Kingdom of Ivalice after the Fifty Years’ War. Ramza Beoulve, the son of a noble family, and Delita, a commoner raised among nobles, are caught up in political conflict involving rival houses and the ruling elite. Square Enix frames the tale around ambition, betrayal, honor, and class struggle. That setup gives the battles a larger political context without requiring a spoiler-heavy account of how the two characters’ paths develop. (Square Enix launch announcement)

Platforms and physical editions
The game launched on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Steam Deck. Physical availability differs by platform and region: Square Enix’s European store lists a physical Nintendo Switch edition and says it includes a free Upgrade Pack for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. TechRadar’s review-era availability note described Switch as available physically and digitally, with Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC digital only. Check current listings in your market, since formats and stock can change. (Square Enix European store; TechRadar review)
What independent reviews establish
TechRadar says it completed the Enhanced version and identifies PS5 as its review platform; its account supports the description of the voiced presentation, visual upgrades, and quality-of-life features, but reflects that reviewer’s experience on PS5. PC Gamer describes tactical considerations including terrain, enemy control, positioning, facing, and difficulty changes. It labels the game single-player and Steam Deck Playable, and lists a laptop configuration of Intel i9-13900HX, RTX 4090 laptop GPU, and 32GB RAM. Those are publication-specific review details, not a universal performance benchmark or a comparison across platforms. (TechRadar; PC Gamer)

The Ivalice Chronicles is a persuasive way to play Final Fantasy Tactics if you want the classic’s strategic battles and character customization with a voiced, refreshed presentation and optional conveniences. Enhanced is the natural starting point for newcomers, especially with the Squire difficulty option; Classic is valuable for players who specifically want the original-style graphics and War of the Lions text. Existing owners have a clear reason to consider it if those Enhanced changes appeal, but the documented differences do not make the older version’s translation or presentation interchangeable with the new one.
