Contemporary U.S. coverage put its launch price at about $14. That was a high ask for a mobile game, though buyers got the added content of War of the Lions and a complete tactical RPG rather than a free-to-play download. The old launch price is not today’s price: Google Play pricing and availability depend on your country.
What launched on Android?
Square Enix released Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions for Android on June 5, 2015. The name matters: this is a mobile port based on the PSP edition of War of the Lions, which followed the original Final Fantasy Tactics on PlayStation in 1997. It is not simply the PS1 game running unchanged on a phone. Contemporary reporting also noted that the game had reached iOS in 2011. Phandroid’s launch report covers the Android release and its version lineage.
The PSP edition brought new animated scenes, additional scenarios and characters, and expanded Jobs content. The Android port adapts its interface for touch, adds gestures to rotate, move and resize the battlefield view, and was reported to improve loading times and let players skip certain cutscenes. Those are a mix of added story and systems content, presentation changes, and mobile conveniences—not evidence of a wholly new game or a modern remaster.
Was the roughly $14 launch price justified?
In the United States, launch-era coverage reported a price of $13.99, commonly rounded to $14. Android Authority described it as a premium paid download with no in-app purchases. That is a historical price, not a reliable guide to what Google Play charges now. The game’s current price must be checked in the reader’s own storefront.

#1 Best Overall
The strongest case for paying a console-scale price is the game itself: a long, story-led campaign, demanding grid-based battles, and a Jobs system that lets you build and customize a party in depth. The PSP version’s added scenes, scenarios, characters, and Jobs content also make this a fuller proposition than buying only the original PS1 version. For a fan who wants a substantial single-player tactical RPG on Android, the price bought a complete experience rather than a sequence of paid upgrades, according to contemporary coverage.
The counterargument is equally practical: a long, systems-heavy game is a poor value if you do not enjoy turn-based tactics, and phone controls and small text can make an already involved game less comfortable. Phandroid suggested waiting for a Square Enix sale; that remains sensible for someone curious but not sure the format will click. Comparing the launch price with a single high-priced used PS1 listing is not a dependable way to judge value: second-hand prices vary, and a physical disc is not the same thing as a mobile digital purchase.

How does it fit a phone?
What works well
- Combat unfolds on a grid in turns, so it does not demand the timing of a real-time action game.
- Most play consists of selecting units, menus, abilities, and destinations by tapping.
- Individual battles provide natural stopping points, even though the campaign as a whole is long.
- The Jobs system gives the game much of its strategic depth and encourages experimenting with party builds.
- Battlefield gestures let you reposition and resize the view, and the Android port was reported to improve loading over earlier versions.
What may frustrate you
- Small text is a notable concern on a phone; Android Authority called it out in its launch-era coverage.
- Touch input can feel awkward or imprecise if you are used to a controller or another version’s interface.
- The battles can be punishing, and the game expects players to manage their party and saves rather than treating every session as disposable.
- Its story, systems, and length suit players who want a substantial RPG, not a quick casual diversion.
- If you specifically want the original PlayStation presentation, this PSP-based edition is not that version.
These interface concerns are not just historical: current Google Play reviews include complaints about controls and save management. Reviews are individual reports, not controlled tests, so use them as signals to consider rather than proof that every player will have the same experience.
What has changed since the Android launch?
The Google Play listing for FINAL FANTASY TACTICS : WotL shows an update dated March 27, 2026. Its “What’s new” notes list a quick-save feature, a fix for a bug that rolled back previous save data, Google Play Services cloud saves, and other minor bug fixes. These are maintenance and save-related improvements, not a new content edition. Cloud saves should not be mistaken for a complete, user-controlled backup system.
The listing also includes a notice that some players encountered launch problems with a particular version of the Google Play Store and that Google would update the Store to address them. That notice does not establish that a widespread issue is still occurring. If the game fails to launch, check for updates to both the Play Store and the game, restart the device, and consult the current listing’s developer support information.
Who should buy it—and who should wait?
It is a strong fit if you

- Want a long, story-heavy single-player game and value the expanded PSP edition.
- Like building a party around flexible Jobs and abilities.

- Want real-time combat, multiplayer, or a short pick-up-and-play game.
- Prefer the original PlayStation presentation or already own a version that meets your needs.
Controller support, device compatibility, and the exact Android requirements are not established in the accessible listing details cited here. Check the Google Play page on your device before buying rather than assuming every phone or control setup will work.

Current Google Play price and availability
Square Enix’s Google Play listing remains accessible, but an accessible listing does not mean the game is offered in every country. On August 18, 2026, the Indonesia storefront showed Rp 229,000; that is a regional snapshot, not a U.S. price. Open the Google Play listing in your own market to see its current price, availability, and compatibility information.
The listing showed 500K+ downloads and an age rating of 7+ with mild violence. Its displayed rating was about 4.3 stars on the primary listing view, while a separate ratings section showed 4.4 and 17.7K reviews; Google Play’s displayed figures can differ by view and market, so the numbers are time-sensitive snapshots rather than a single fixed score.
