To set up a Meta Quest 3, charge the headset, install the Meta Horizon app on a compatible phone, pair the headset, connect it to Wi-Fi, and follow the on-screen update and boundary prompts. A phone is required for initial setup; a gaming PC is not required to play Quest games standalone.
What you need before setting up Quest 3
- Meta Quest 3 headset and both Touch Plus controllers.
- A compatible Android phone or iPhone with the current Meta Horizon app.
- A Meta account and access to a Wi-Fi network.
- A clear, well-lit area for setup and play.
- Optional: the included glasses spacer or prescription lens inserts if you wear glasses.
The included USB-C cable and power adapter can be used to charge the headset if supplied with your regional package. You do not need a gaming PC for standalone use. PC VR through Quest Link or Air Link is a separate, optional setup.
Meta says its companion app is needed for initial pairing and setup, though it is not required every time you use the headset. Meta’s Quest 3 setup instructions provide the official starting point.
Charge the headset and prepare the controllers
- Remove the headset from its packaging and peel off any protective film covering the lenses.
- Connect the headset to power and leave it charging while you install the phone app and prepare your account. Battery level and charging time vary, so do not assume the headset is fully charged out of the box.
- Keep the lenses pointed away from direct sunlight, including sunlight through a window; concentrated sunlight can damage the display.
- Pull the paper battery blockers from both controllers. If they are already removed, check that each battery is seated correctly.
- Attach the wrist straps before using the controllers.
- Hold the right controller’s Meta button and the left controller’s Menu button for about two seconds to wake them. A vibration or status light indicates a response.
The headset should detect both controllers during setup. If one is not available, some setup screens can be navigated by looking at an option and using headset controls to select it. Meta community support describes gaze navigation and controller recovery for cases where controllers will not pair.

Install the Meta Horizon app
- Install the official Meta Horizon app from Google Play or Apple’s App Store.
- Open the app and sign in with the Meta account that should own the headset’s purchases and account data, or create an account.
- Allow Bluetooth and nearby-device permissions when prompted. Keep the phone close to the headset during pairing.
- Have the phone and headset ready to connect to the same Wi-Fi network if the app requests it.
App compatibility and permission labels can change; use the current prompts on your phone rather than assuming every older Android phone or iPhone is supported.
Turn on Quest 3 and pair it with your phone
- Press and hold the headset’s power button for about three seconds.
- Put on the headset and follow the language, account, and Wi-Fi prompts.
- In the Meta Horizon app, open Devices, then choose the option to add or connect a headset. The app may instead show a setup card automatically. Depending on app version, the route can appear as Menu → Devices → Add device.
- Select Meta Quest 3 and follow the pairing prompts.
- If automatic pairing does not complete, enter the five-digit code shown inside the headset into the app.
Menu wording can vary between Meta Horizon app releases; follow the closest current device-adding option if labels differ from these.
If the pairing code does not appear
- Remove and put the headset back on, and confirm it is on the pairing screen.
- Fully close and reopen the Meta Horizon app, then check for an app update.
- Confirm Bluetooth and nearby-device permissions are enabled; toggle Bluetooth off and on.
- Restart both the phone and headset and try again.
- Use another compatible phone only as a diagnostic test if the first phone still cannot pair.
A factory reset is not a sensible first step for a new headset: it removes local device data and settings.

Connect to Wi-Fi and let the headset update
Select a network in the headset, enter its password, and allow any required system software to download and install. Keep the headset on its charger and do not interrupt power or repeatedly reset it while an update is applying.

If the update fails, move nearer the router, re-enter the password, and restart the router and headset. A phone hotspot can help identify a router problem, but may be a poor choice for a large download if signal or data is limited.
If the headset appears stuck, leave it charging, verify the connection, update the phone app if pairing is involved, and try another network as a diagnostic step. Contact Meta support before resetting. Meta community support notes that low charge can resemble a startup failure and advises completing wireless setup before PC connection.

Adjust the fit, lenses, and controllers
Fit the head strap and facial interface
- Loosen the top and side straps before putting the headset on.
- Set the facial interface evenly against your face, then tighten the side straps gradually.
- Use the top strap to support the headset’s weight instead of overtightening the sides.
- Check that the headset stays in place when you look around without creating uncomfortable pressure.
Set lens spacing and glasses clearance
Adjust the lens spacing until the image looks sharp and comfortable to both eyes. There is no single spacing setting that suits everyone; the appropriate position depends on your eyes and perceived clarity. If you wear glasses, use the glasses-relief setting or spacer if available, and do not force your frames against the headset lenses. Prescription inserts may be more comfortable for frequent use.
Check controller comfort
Keep the wrist straps on while learning the controls. Hand tracking can be useful for supported menus and experiences, but some games and functions require controllers.

Stationary boundary
Choose a stationary area for seated use, watching media, or experiences that do not require walking. It is also a practical option in a small room.

Room-scale boundary
For standing games, fitness, or experiences involving movement, clear enough floor space to move without striking objects. Before drawing the boundary, move furniture, cables, pets, and fragile items; keep away from stairs, glass, sharp edges, and hot surfaces. Follow the headset prompts, look around when asked, and redraw the boundary if the room layout changes.
Quest 3 uses cameras and on-device processing for passthrough, tracking, and room understanding, as described by Meta Reality Labs. That assistance is not a guarantee that every obstacle will be detected. Check the actual room yourself; passthrough and boundary warnings do not prevent collisions. If room detection is inaccurate, improve lighting, clear the floor, avoid moving while drawing, and redraw manually.

During setup and when features request access, consider what camera and passthrough, microphone, hand-tracking, and social permissions are for. Some features will not work if their required permissions are denied. Check account privacy and social settings, especially on a shared headset, and remember that casting can show the headset view to other people on the network.

For a child or teen, use Meta’s current family-account and parental-control guidance rather than assuming adult account rules apply. Availability and account rules can vary by age, country, and service changes.
Install your first apps and games
- Open the Store in the headset or Meta Horizon app.
- Choose an app or game and install it; the phone app can also initiate remote installation.
- Wait for the download to finish, then launch the title from the headset library.
- Check available headset storage before installing large games.
Prices, storage configurations, regional bundles, and promotions can change, so check the current Store listing for the account and region you use.
Cast Quest 3 to a phone, television, or browser
Casting mirrors the headset wearer’s view for spectators; it is not PC VR. Start casting from the headset’s universal menu or the Meta Horizon app, then select a compatible phone, browser, or supported television/streaming target. Devices may need to be on the same network. Expect some delay or reduced image quality compared with the view inside the headset, and stop casting when the view should remain private. Connect Quest 3 to a gaming PC only if you want PC VR
Standalone setup is complete before PC VR is needed. PC VR generally requires a compatible Windows gaming PC, Meta Quest Link desktop software, and either a suitable USB-C Link cable or a wireless network for Air Link. Steam-based titles also use Steam and SteamVR. Update graphics drivers and check the current official Link and game requirements before connecting; requirements vary by PC and software. Fix common Quest 3 setup problems

Factory reset only as a last resort
A reset removes local content and settings. Before considering it, confirm cloud backup status and ask Meta support about the specific failure. One reported app route is Devices → headset → Advanced Settings → Factory Reset; labels can change. The reported path appears in Meta community support guidance for an update problem.
Before buying a used Quest 3
Ask the seller to remove the headset from their Meta account and verify that you can activate it. Inspect the lenses for scratches or possible sunlight damage, and check for both controllers, batteries, facial interface, and charging equipment. A headset stuck at account activation may not be ready for a new owner.
