Historically, the safest first investment in FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS was not a universally top-ranked character. Build the character attached to your account’s strongest five-star weapon, useful costume bonus, practical Overboost level, and needed element. Then form a three-person core with one damage carry, one healer or sustain option, and one support or debuff specialist.
This is now an archival guide. Square Enix ended service for FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS on October 6, 2026, at 11:00 PM PDT. The game launched on September 7, 2023, for App Store and Google Play and on December 6, 2023, for Steam. No new banners, account progression, or live-service balance changes should be expected after the closure.
What this tier list means after Ever Crisis ended
Ever Crisis never had a permanent best character in the way a traditional single-player game can have a permanently strongest party member. Character value came from the complete build: weapon kit, costume bonuses, Overboost level, elemental access, sigil coverage, healing or mitigation, and the encounter you were trying to clear.

A character with a high theoretical ranking could be a poor practical investment if the account lacked the weapon that made the ranking possible. Conversely, an ordinary-looking character could become the right choice when a five-star weapon, costume, element, or sigil requirement lined up with the account’s needs. That is why the most reliable historical advice was account-specific: start with the best finished weapon you already own, not with a universal letter grade.
Because the service has ended, this article does not predict future banners or recommend spending resources now. It records the build logic that players used while the game was active and explains why fixed tier lists often misled new accounts.
The historical service timeline
| Event | Date | What it means for this guide |
|---|---|---|
| App Store and Google Play launch | September 7, 2023 | The beginning of mobile account progression covered by historical tier lists. |
| Steam launch | December 6, 2023 | PC players joined the same live-service progression environment. |
| Service ended | October 6, 2026, at 11:00 PM PDT | Recommendations are archival; there is no ongoing banner cycle or new progression to plan around. |
Square Enix’s end-of-service notice said, “We regret to inform you that we will be ending service for FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS on Oct. 6, 2026, at 11:00 PM PDT.” The producer’s explanation identified the difficulty of balancing production costs with demand for character weapons and gear. Those statements are important context: a current guide cannot honestly imply that the game remains an active, updating RPG.

How to judge a character instead of trusting a fixed tier
Evaluate the complete package available on your account. The following checks were more useful than a simple S, A, or B label:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Role coverage: Does the character provide damage, healing, mitigation, debuffs, elemental resistance manipulation, or sigil coverage that your current team lacks?
- Weapon quality: Is the character’s best weapon actually in your inventory, and does it have the right ability for the content you are attempting?
- Overboost level: Can you reach a meaningful Overboost breakpoint with copies you already have, or would the build consume scarce resources for a small gain?
- Costume bonuses: Does an available costume improve the weapon kit or the character’s intended role?
- Element and sigils: Can the character answer the boss’s elemental weakness or required sigil checks?
- Resource cost: How many character-stream materials, weapon materials, and upgrade items are needed before the build becomes usable?
- Encounter fit: Does the kit solve the mechanics of the stage, rather than merely displaying strong numbers in a neutral test?
Weapon Overboost and limited-banner availability were especially important. A limited weapon that only became efficient at a high Overboost level could be a worse target than a permanently available weapon already close to completion. Historical upgrade guidance therefore treated many limited weapons cautiously unless the account could realistically reach the required level.
Who to build first: the historical order
1. Establish one dependable damage carry
Choose the character for whom you have the strongest combination of five-star weapon, costume support, Overboost progress, and elemental coverage. This gives the account a reliable way to clear ordinary stages and farm the materials needed for the rest of the team. Do not split early resources across several half-built attackers unless a stage specifically demands multiple elements.
Cloud was a common historical damage anchor because many accounts had access to his weapons and costumes. Square Enix’s 2025 anniversary campaign gave players 11 five-star copies of Cloud’s Umbral Blade, creating an unusually accessible path to a developed Cloud weapon for participating accounts. That gift did not make Cloud universally best: it made him a particularly practical first carry when those copies were present and when their element and ability suited the content.
2. Add healing or sustain
A damage dealer cannot compensate for a team that repeatedly dies before its abilities cycle. Your second priority was a dependable healing or sustain weapon, even if it belonged to a character who ranked lower on a generic list. Healing, regeneration, mitigation, or defensive utility reduced the number of attempts lost to attrition and made difficult farming stages more consistent.

Aerith, Matt, and Red XIII could fill healing or sustain needs through different weapon kits. The correct choice depended on which weapon was available and what secondary effects it supplied. If one option healed while another also answered a needed debuff, element, or sigil, the extra utility often mattered more than a nominal character ranking.
3. Fill the support and encounter-utility slot
Use the third slot to solve the mechanics your first two characters cannot handle. Useful functions included attack or defense debuffs, elemental-resistance manipulation, additional sigils, mitigation, or a second damage type. A support character who lowers an enemy’s defenses can increase the whole party’s effective damage, while a character carrying the required sigil can prevent a wipe even if their personal damage is modest.
There was no single best support for every stage. Boss element, sigil pattern, incoming damage, and time limits changed the answer. Build the tool that answers the encounter in front of you, then return to general-purpose upgrades when the stage is cleared.
4. Expand only after the core works
Once one carry, one sustain option, and one utility character were functional, widen the roster for additional elements and sigils. This order kept character-stream and weapon resources concentrated on an active core instead of producing a large collection of unfinished builds. A broad roster became valuable later, but it was rarely the most efficient first-account goal.

Character-by-character historical guidance
Cloud: the practical first carry when your weapon supports him
Cloud was often the simplest damage-first recommendation for a new account because his historical weapon access could be unusually favorable. The anniversary distribution of 11 five-star Umbral Blade copies gave eligible players a substantial head start toward a weapon-centered Cloud build. Check the weapon’s element, ability effects, Overboost state, and costume interaction before committing every resource.
Cloud should not automatically occupy a slot when another character has the account’s only strong weapon for a required element or sigil. In that situation, the other character is the better investment even if a general list places Cloud higher.
Aerith: healing and sustain for teams that need stability
Aerith’s historical value came from the healing or sustain role supplied by her available weapon kits. For a new account, that role could be more important than adding a second attacker. A team that survives consistently earns more upgrade materials and can attempt harder content sooner.
Compare Aerith’s actual weapon and costume options with those of Matt and Red XIII. If Aerith offers the account’s most reliable healing at a reasonable Overboost level, she is the correct early investment. If another character provides comparable sustain plus a required debuff or sigil, the broader kit may be preferable.

Matt: another sustain route, judged by the weapon rather than the name
Matt also filled healing or sustain needs through his weapon kits. His place on a practical tier list was therefore account-dependent. Build Matt when his available weapon supplies the healing, mitigation, or secondary effect your team lacks and can be upgraded without an unrealistic copy requirement.
The key comparison is not “Aerith versus Matt” in isolation. It is “Which of their usable weapons lets this account survive the target content while preserving resources for a carry and support slot?”
Red XIII: a notable historical hybrid
Red XIII stood out because his historical kits could combine ally healing through regeneration with enemy debuffs. A tier-list analysis described him as able to apply MDEF and MATK debuffs while supporting the party. That hybrid role made him valuable when a team needed both sustain and reduced incoming or magical pressure but had room for only one flexible slot.
Red XIII was not automatically the best healer or the best debuffer. His advantage was compression: one character could cover jobs that otherwise required two slots or two weapon investments. Check whether the specific Red XIII weapon you own provides the effects needed for the stage and whether its Overboost level is practical.

Historical team templates
These are role templates, not permanent rankings. Replace a character when another member owns the weapon, element, or sigil that the encounter requires.
| Team shape | Slot 1 | Slot 2 | Slot 3 | When it made sense |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced starter core | Cloud or your strongest weapon-based attacker | Aerith, Matt, or Red XIII for healing/sustain | Support or debuff specialist | General progression when no unusual elemental or sigil requirement dominated. |
| Hybrid sustain core | Main damage carry | Red XIII with regeneration and debuff utility | Second damage or encounter support | Stages where one flexible slot needed to cover both survival and enemy weakening. |
| Mechanic-focused core | Attacker with the required element | Healer or mitigation provider | Character carrying the required sigil or resistance manipulation | Bosses whose mechanics mattered more than raw neutral damage. |
| Double-damage push | Primary carry | Second attacker with complementary element or damage type | Sustain or defensive support | Short fights where survival was secure and a time limit demanded more damage. |
Overboost and resource priorities
Overboost was not simply a number to maximize on every weapon. The practical question was whether additional copies changed the weapon’s usefulness enough to justify the materials and opportunity cost. A moderately Overboosted weapon already owned could outperform a flashy limited weapon that required many future copies to reach its useful state.
- Secure one dependable healer or sustain weapon. Without reliable recovery or mitigation, later damage upgrades often produce fragile clears.
- Build one main elemental attacker. Use the best weapon already available, and choose the character whose costume and element reinforce it.
- Add support and debuff tools. Prioritize effects that answer the content you are currently failing, such as defense reduction, elemental resistance manipulation, or a needed sigil.
- Spend character-stream and weapon resources on the active core. Finish the three characters you use before opening several additional projects.
- Treat limited weapons cautiously. If the weapon is not useful until a high Overboost level and you cannot realistically reach it, keep resources for a dependable alternative.
This order was a historical efficiency rule, not a command to ignore every limited item. A limited weapon that arrived with enough copies, matched the account’s strongest costume, and solved a specific encounter could still be the right target.
How to adapt a build to a boss
When a stage stops your team, identify the failure before changing characters. If the party dies to sustained damage, improve healing, regeneration, mitigation, or defensive debuffs. If the timer expires, replace a redundant support effect with a second damage type or an attacker carrying the correct element. If a mechanic check fails, bring the required sigil or resistance manipulation even when that character appears lower on a general list.
Keep the carry’s weapon ability, the sustain weapon, and the support effect in separate mental categories. A character can be strong in one category and unnecessary in another. Rebuilding the entire roster after every loss wasted resources; changing the one slot responsible for the failure was usually more efficient.
A quick decision framework for a new historical account
| Question | If the answer is yes | If the answer is no |
|---|---|---|
| Do you have a five-star weapon with a practical Overboost path? | Make that character your leading carry or role specialist. | Compare all usable weapons before investing in a character name. |
| Can the current team heal or sustain through the stage? | Use the third slot for damage or encounter utility. | Prioritize Aerith, Matt, Red XIII, or another available sustain weapon. |
| Does the boss require a specific element or sigil? | Keep the general-purpose build. | Promote the character and weapon that meet the requirement, regardless of tier label. |
| Would a limited weapon need many more copies? | Invest only if the target Overboost level is realistic. | Prefer a dependable weapon already close to completion. |
Common mistakes
- Building a character without checking the weapon: Character identity alone does not provide the kit that made historical rankings meaningful.
- Chasing a universal top tier: A ranking that ignores your element, sigil, costume, and Overboost state cannot choose your best investment.
- Delaying sustain: A second attacker is not an upgrade if the team cannot survive long enough to use it.
- Spreading materials across the whole roster: Several incomplete characters are less useful than a functioning three-person core.
- Ignoring encounter mechanics: Required sigils and elemental resistance effects can outweigh a character’s neutral damage reputation.
- Assuming limited means better: Availability and Overboost requirements determine practical value.
Final historical verdict
The best first build in Ever Crisis was the strongest account-specific weapon package, arranged into three jobs: damage, sustain, and support or debuff utility. Cloud was a common carry, especially for accounts that received the 11 five-star Umbral Blade copies in the 2025 anniversary campaign. Aerith and Matt offered healing-oriented paths, while Red XIII was a notable hybrid because regeneration and MDEF/MATK debuffs could share one slot.
Quick Recap
Those recommendations describe how players made decisions while the game was live. Since service ended on October 6, 2026, there is no current banner schedule or progression plan to optimize. The lasting lesson is the evaluation method: build the weapon and role your account can actually complete, then adapt the third slot to the encounter instead of following a permanent universal tier.
