Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is approachable without having played Final Fantasy VII Remake, but a few early choices make a major difference. Start on the combat style you can comfortably control, use Normal unless you have a clear reason to lower or raise the challenge, and learn to switch between party members instead of waiting for the computer-controlled characters to do everything. Explore regional Intel when it is enjoyable, but do not treat every map icon or side quest as mandatory before you follow the story.
This guide explains the systems that matter in your first hours, how to build a practical party, what your Remake save data does and does not provide, and how to prepare whether you play on PS5 or PC.

Do you need to play Final Fantasy VII Remake first?
No. Remake is useful context, not a strict requirement. Rebirth is the second game in the remake project, yet the official PlayStation material presents it as a standalone entry for both returning players and newcomers. You will understand more of the characters, relationships and preceding events if you have played Remake, but you do not need to postpone Rebirth until you have completed it.

Rebirth is a story-driven, party-based role-playing game with real-time combat, exploration and light puzzle-solving. The opening hours introduce the setting and playable systems as you go, so begin by paying attention to character relationships, objectives and tutorial prompts rather than trying to memorize the entire history of Final Fantasy VII.

What returning players gain from old save data
Square Enix documents bonus items for players with save data from Final Fantasy VII Remake, Remake Intergrade or Episode INTERmission. These are optional bonuses. They do not replace the story, unlock a required route or make a new player unprepared; treat them as a small reward for returning rather than a reason to delay starting.
Choose settings that match how you want to learn
Rebirth lets you select a combat style and a difficulty separately. You can change difficulty when the early major encounters show that your current setting is not enjoyable, so the first choice does not have to be permanent.
Active or Classic combat
| Style | Best fit | How to approach it |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Players who want direct, real-time control | Move, attack, guard and dodge yourself while opening the command menu when an ability or spell is ready. |
| Classic | Players who prefer to think about commands more than routine actions | Let the game handle more ordinary combat activity while you concentrate on choosing commands and timing abilities. |
Neither style is a permanent commitment to a particular build. Choose the one that lets you read enemy behavior and issue commands without fighting the controls. If Active makes you miss every opportunity to use ATB abilities, Classic may give you enough attention to learn the system; if Classic feels too passive, move to Active and practice in low-risk battles.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Easy, Normal or Dynamic
| Difficulty | Use it when | Practical advice |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | You mainly want the story, exploration and character interactions | Use it if repeated battles are interrupting your enjoyment or if you are unfamiliar with action-RPG controls. |
| Normal | You want the standard starting point | Begin here if you are comfortable learning enemy patterns and managing a party, then lower the setting if the first major encounters become a wall. |
| Dynamic | You want a different challenge from the standard choices | Select it when you are willing to experiment and adjust your tactics rather than expecting every encounter to feel predictable. |
Do not choose a higher setting to prove that you are playing “properly.” Rebirth’s combat is built around decisions, not endurance. A lower difficulty that lets you practice ATB, stagger windows and party rotation is more useful than a setting that makes you ignore those systems.
Learn the combat loop before chasing advanced techniques
The essential loop is simple: control a character directly, build ATB, spend the gauge on an ability or spell, observe the enemy’s response, and switch to the party member whose tool is needed next. Rebirth rewards strategic control rather than holding one character on screen for an entire fight.

Why direct control matters
AI-controlled party members fight competently, but they do not fill their ATB as quickly as a character you control yourself. Square Enix’s guidance is explicit: “Left to their own devices, the other members of your party will fight competently, but if you want to fill their ATB quickly so you can use their Abilities, it’s best to take direct control.”
In practice, do not wait for the whole party to become ready. Take control of the character whose gauge you want to build, then switch when another member has the spell, ability or position the situation calls for. This also keeps enemies from focusing all of their pressure on one character.

Use ATB deliberately
- Build ATB through direct actions rather than standing still and waiting.
- Spend the gauge on abilities or spells that answer the current enemy, not automatically on the first available command.
- Switch characters after spending a gauge so another member can build theirs.
- Keep an eye on enemy behavior; a powerful command used during a vulnerable window is worth more than one used at random.
Early fights are a safe place to practice this rhythm. You are learning when to change control, not trying to finish every battle with a perfect sequence.
Pressure and stagger opportunities
Watch how enemies react to your attacks and abilities. The combat system gives you openings to pressure enemies and eventually stagger them. When an enemy is showing a response to your current tactic, continue with the party member or ability that exploits that opening instead of scattering commands across unrelated targets.
Because the exact answer varies by enemy, make observation part of your routine: test a sensible ability, look for the reaction, then commit resources when the response confirms that you have found a useful approach.

Build a party with jobs, not identical loadouts
A practical beginner party has complementary jobs: one character who can help pressure or stagger, one dependable damage dealer, and one support or healing option. The names of those roles matter less than covering all three functions with the characters currently available.
Assign materia to the current team
Weapons and materia provide access to a wide range of abilities. Treat each active character’s materia slots as a job assignment for the party you are actually using. If every character is equipped for the same kind of damage, you may have no answer when an enemy demands support, healing or a different pressure tool.
- Give one active character the support or healing responsibility so you know whom to control when the party needs recovery.
- Give another a reliable damage option for moments when an enemy is open.
- Reserve a slot or ability for pressure and stagger work where the encounter suggests it is useful.
- Change the setup when a new region or enemy type exposes a weakness in your current plan.
You do not need a permanently perfect arrangement. The important habit is to review materia when your active trio changes instead of leaving every slot untouched for the entire game.
Practice a few party combinations
Keep a small set of complementary combinations practiced rather than trying to master every possible pairing immediately. Switch to the character whose ATB or positional tool you need, use it, and rotate back to the member who is ready to contribute next.
Party level and character affinity unlock additional options, so experimenting has progression value as well as tactical value. Try newly unlocked Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities in low-risk fights; learning their timing when the consequences are small makes them easier to use in difficult encounters.

Understand Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities
Synergy Abilities are cooperative attacks performed by party members. Some of them raise the party’s limit level, and more abilities become available as party level and character affinity deepen. They are therefore both combat tools and a reason to vary the relationships and pairings you use.
When to test them
Use a newly unlocked Synergy Skill or Ability in an ordinary battle first. Confirm its range, timing and the characters involved before relying on it in a major encounter. A low-risk test also shows whether you need to switch control to a particular character before the command becomes available.
How to fit synergy into your rotation
Do not stop building ATB for the sake of using a cooperative attack immediately. First establish who is generating gauges and who is handling support. Then use synergy when it fits the opening you have created or when raising the party’s limit level is strategically useful. This keeps synergy integrated with your combat plan instead of turning it into a button you press whenever it lights up.

Rebirth’s regions reward curiosity, but beginners do not have to clear every icon before advancing the main story. Regional Intel is a useful way to discover activities and learn the area, yet it should support your pace rather than dictate it.

Use Regional Intel as a menu of options
When you enter a region, look over the available Intel and choose activities that match what you want from the session. If you enjoy roaming, investigate several objectives before returning to the main path. If you want story momentum, complete only the nearby tasks that look interesting and move on.

Why First Strike matters
Square Enix uses First Strike materia in the Grasslands as an example of a useful regional reward. It starts battles with a partially filled ATB gauge, giving you an earlier command and making the opening seconds of a fight more decisive. That is a concrete reason to explore, but it is not a requirement for progressing.
Side quests and pacing
Side quests are optional content. There is no need to delay the next story objective because an area still has unfinished markers. Explore when the discoveries are enjoyable, then follow the main route when you want narrative momentum. Square Enix’s own closing advice is direct: “The final tip I want to give you is: take your time.”
Prepare controls on PS5 or PC
The core systems are the same, but your control setup can change how easily you access them.
| Platform | Preparation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Use the default controller layout first, then adjust anything that prevents comfortable access. | Confirm movement, camera control, dodge, guard and command-menu inputs in a safe area before a difficult encounter. |
| PC | Keyboard and mouse support is available, and bindings can be customized. | Set and test shortcuts before a long session. Rebirth allows separate customization for exploration, combat and minigames, so review each context rather than assuming one change applies everywhere. |
On PC, make your changes before you become invested in a long fight. A command shortcut that feels natural during exploration may be awkward in combat, while a key that works for combat may be unavailable or uncomfortable during a minigame. Confirm camera movement, dodge, guard and command access in a low-risk area.
A first-session plan that teaches the right habits
- Select your style and difficulty. Choose Active or Classic based on control comfort, and start with Normal unless you already know you want a more relaxed or experimental challenge.
- Complete the early tutorials without rushing past them. They establish movement, commands and party control that later fights assume you understand.
- Practice switching characters. Build one ATB gauge, spend it, then take control of a different member rather than waiting for the AI.
- Test one pressure or stagger approach. Watch the enemy’s reaction and learn what a useful opening looks like.
- Assign materia by role. Make sure the current trio has damage, support or healing, and a way to respond to the enemies you are facing.
- Try a Synergy Skill or Ability in a safe fight. Learn its timing before you need it under pressure.
- Explore nearby Regional Intel if you want to. Pick up useful discoveries such as First Strike in the Grasslands, but leave unfinished icons for later without guilt.
- Reassess after the first major encounters. If battles are too demanding, change difficulty; if they feel passive, switch combat style or begin taking direct control more often.
Common beginner mistakes and the fix for each
- Staying on one character: Switch after spending ATB so the rest of the party can generate gauges under your control.
- Leaving materia unchanged: Rebuild roles when the active trio or region changes.
- Using abilities without reading the fight: Watch enemy behavior first, then spend ATB when a pressure or stagger opportunity appears.
- Treating every map marker as mandatory: Regional Intel and side content are options; return to them when you want a slower session.
- Ignoring newly unlocked synergy: Test it in a low-risk battle so its timing is familiar before a demanding encounter.
- Keeping an uncomfortable control layout: Adjust the relevant exploration, combat or minigame bindings instead of forcing yourself to use defaults.
- Delaying the game for Remake: Start Rebirth now if you want to; prior save data only adds optional bonuses.
The short version
Start Rebirth on the settings you can comfortably learn, not the settings you think you are expected to use. Control characters directly to build ATB, rotate through the active trio, spend abilities in response to enemy behavior, and give each party member a distinct job through materia. Practice synergy in ordinary fights, explore Regional Intel when it is fun, and leave optional markers behind when the story has your attention. Remake knowledge and save data are helpful extras, but neither is a gate to beginning Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
