Final Fantasy VII Revelation Director on the Final Sephiroth Fight—and Whether Another Trilogy Will Follow

Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi promises an extravagant final Sephiroth showdown and sees the trilogy as a possible case study, not a guaranteed blueprint for future remakes.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi says the trilogy’s final game will end with an unusually ambitious Sephiroth showdown, but he cannot predict whether another developer will attempt a similarly large, multipart remake. He describes the fight as “very extravagant” and “all-out”—a promise about an unreleased game, not a verdict based on the finished encounter.

What Hamaguchi says about Revelation’s final Sephiroth fight

In an interview with PC Gamer published October 2, 2026, Hamaguchi said fans would be angry if the game did not include a dramatic showdown with Sephiroth. He characterized the encounter this way: “What I can say is that it’s going to be a very extravagant, all-out battle that will far and above surpass what was in Remake and Rebirth in what I believe will be a very satisfying encounter.”

That is the director’s expectation for the final battle, not an independently verified description of gameplay. Revelation had not launched at the time of the interview. Hamaguchi also acknowledged interest in Cloud using his Omnislash limit break at the end of the fight: “I know there are a lot of people out there who are looking forward to seeing the ultimate limit break [Omnislash] at the end of the battle with Sephiroth.” The game also includes homages to the original Final Fantasy VII, according to the interview.

Will another developer make a multipart remake like this?

Hamaguchi does not offer a yes-or-no prediction. Asked whether another developer might take a famous older game and remake it as a multipart series, he said: “So I can’t say whether in the future anyone else will decide that they’re going to take a famous old game and remake it as a multi-part series, but regardless, I do think that this has left quite a lot of interesting knowledge as a case study.”

That leaves the possibility open without suggesting the format will become common—or that nobody else will try it. Hamaguchi’s point is that Final Fantasy VII’s remake project may give other developers useful experience to consider. PC Gamer reports that he put the team’s time working together at 10–12 years; that is his estimate in this interview, not an industry-wide measure of how long such a project takes.

Why this trilogy is a distinctive case study

The project is not simply a single remake divided into equal chunks. Its installments expand and redistribute material from the original story, while the third game is intended to bring the remake trilogy’s narrative to a close. That makes the team’s long-term continuity and its decisions about where the story should end relevant to any studio contemplating a similar undertaking—but it does not establish that the approach is financially or operationally replicable.

In a separate Video Games Chronicle interview published June 11, 2026, Hamaguchi said the conclusion’s direction was in place from early in development, with producer Yoshinori Kitase also bringing a vision for the ending. He also argued that mechanically reacting to the midpoint of positive and negative fan feedback can make a game feel characterless. Those are his views on this project and creative decision-making, not universal rules for developing a remake.

What is confirmed about the final game

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is presented as the third and final entry in the remake trilogy, following Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. PlayStation’s September 17, 2026 hands-on report lists the game for PS5 and gives April 8, 2027 as its launch date; that is the date announced by the source and could change.

PlayStation’s report describes a demo set in the Whirlwind Maze, with Vincent and Cid playable, the FITS combat system, and a battle against Jenova Deathmourner. Those details establish some of the pre-release context, but they do not verify Hamaguchi’s description of the final Sephiroth fight. The PC Gamer interview places the game’s story around the original’s final third, with Meteor, Sephiroth, and the Weapons among the central context; readers unfamiliar with the original may want to avoid plot details before playing.
