Yes, FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION has a physical Nintendo Switch 2 release—but it is a Game-Key Card, not a cartridge containing the game. Square Enix says downloading it requires an internet connection and at least 130 GB of available storage. Nintendo currently estimates the game file at 130.1 GB, a figure that may change before release. The card gives you something physical to insert; it does not spare you the download or the storage space.
What the physical Switch 2 edition includes—and what it does not
Square Enix lists a physical Switch 2 version of FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION as a Game-Key Card. Nintendo explains that Game-Key Cards do not contain the game data: you insert the card, download the software to the console or supported expansion storage, and keep the card inserted to play.

Nintendo says an internet connection is required for the download and the game’s first launch. After that first launch, the game can be started offline, but the card must still be inserted. Nintendo also says an account is not required to download Game-Key Card data. So this is a physical release, but not one that lets you install the game from the card or play without retaining the card.
How much space does Revelation need?
Nintendo’s US product listing gives REVELATION an estimated file size of 130.1 GB. Nintendo warns that preorder details, including download size, may change before release. Separately, Square Enix’s North American store says the Game-Key Card download requires an internet connection and at least 130 GB of available storage. These are current published figures, not a measured final install size.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
How that fits on Switch 2
Nintendo says Switch 2 has 256 GB of total system storage, with some capacity reserved for system use. That means the headline 256 GB is not all available for game downloads. A 130 GB requirement takes up a substantial share of the console’s published total capacity, even before accounting for other games, updates, captures, and reserved space.
Nintendo supports microSD Express cards for downloaded software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and video captures. The game can be stored in console memory or on a supported microSD Express card; Nintendo and Square Enix do not say an expansion card is mandatory for this title. The practical check is whether you have at least 130 GB free in the storage location you plan to use.

Revelation is larger than Rebirth on the current listings
Nintendo lists FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH at 91.5 GB on Switch 2. That is 38.6 GB less than REVELATION’s current estimated 130.1 GB listing. This is a comparison of Nintendo’s published figures, not an explanation for the difference, and REVELATION’s estimate may change.

The objection is not that no physical edition exists. It is that the physical card does not carry the software, despite the usual expectation that buying a physical game provides a way to install or keep the game data without a large download. Here, the card functions as a required physical key, while the full game still has to be downloaded and stored.

- 40 dream cars from top manufacturers

- New races on French and Japanese highways
- An immersive Story mode based on Japanese car culture
- Extensive customization: mechanical and bodywork; plus, customize your garage
That distinction matters most for buyers with limited bandwidth, data caps, slow connections, or little free storage. A Game-Key Card can still suit someone who wants a physical item and is comfortable downloading the game, but it does not solve the storage problem implied by a 130 GB download requirement.
The format is part of a broader industry shift, but reaction should not be mistaken for a measured statistic. In a GamesRadar+ interview published October 26, 2025, Final Fantasy VII Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi said he understood why some players dislike the format, and noted that Switch 2 players especially value physical media. Those are his views on the trend, not a Nintendo policy statement or a poll of customers.

What to check before buying
- Confirm the format: Square Enix identifies the physical Switch 2 edition as a Game-Key Card, not a cartridge containing the game data.
- Check free space: Square Enix requires at least 130 GB available; Nintendo’s current 130.1 GB figure is an estimate that can change.
- Plan your connection: You need internet for the download and first launch. Nintendo says the game can launch offline after that, with the card inserted.
- Choose storage: Nintendo supports console memory and microSD Express storage for game data. The available information does not establish that this title requires an expansion card.
- Separate collectibles from software: Square Enix lists Deluxe Edition extras including a soundtrack, artbook, and SteelBook case, and a limited Collector’s Edition that adds a Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth statue. The extras do not change the Game-Key Card download requirement.
