Viper’s launch rotation drew feedback for being busy, and Square Enix subsequently changed parts of it. There is no single best melee job for every duty or player.
What counts as a melee DPS job in Dawntrail?
The standard PvE melee roster is Monk, Dragoon, Ninja, Samurai, Reaper, and Viper. The official job guide describes melee DPS as close-range attackers who rely on combos and careful positioning. Dawntrail added Viper, raised the level cap to 100, and introduced new actions for existing jobs; Pictomancer also debuted in the expansion, but it is a magical ranged DPS job rather than a melee job. Beastmaster is listed separately as a limited job, so it is not part of this six-job comparison.
For impressions, the useful questions are how a rotation flows, how much action density it demands, how it handles movement and burst, and how well its damage pattern fits a particular encounter. Those are different from asking which job is strongest: official adjustment notes explain specific changes and rationales, not a universal ranking.
How Dawntrail’s melee jobs feel different
Viper: fast flow, with a launch-era busyness caveat
Viper’s dual-blade identity and linked action flow make speed central to its feel. At launch, players raised concerns about the “busyness of their skill rotation.” Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida acknowledged that feedback when discussing planned changes: “Newly released in Patch 7.0, we’ve received feedback pertaining to the busyness of their skill rotation.” See the official producer statement.

Square Enix later removed the Noxious Gnash upkeep mechanic and replaced it with self-applied Honed Steel and Honed Reavers effects, giving players more choice over when to apply them. That is a meaningful change to upkeep and timing, but it does not establish that every player will find Viper relaxed: its quick, connected actions can still feel crowded if you prefer more pauses between decisions. Check the current in-game tooltips for exact level-100 action behavior.
Monk: a familiar rhythm reshaped
Monk is a useful example of how an expansion rotation can feel different from the version a player already knows. Square Enix’s adjustment archive says feedback focused on how the new rotation differed from the 6.x version; developers then changed Fury stack behavior to bring it closer to the earlier rotation. This documents an effort toward continuity, not proof that one version suits all Monk players better. The official history is in the previous-patch adjustment archive.

Dragoon: burst density and time away from the target
Dragoon’s adjustment history offers two practical lenses: how dense its burst phase feels and what happens when a mechanic forces you out of melee range. Square Enix reduced the number of actions during burst phases, with potency adjustments to maintain melee balance. In Patch 7.1, it also increased ranged options to help reduce damage losses when distance from an enemy is necessary. Those revisions address action flow and downtime recovery; they are not a promise that every movement-heavy fight will be lossless.
Ninja: execution flexibility in burst and at range
Ninja’s Patch 7.1 changes targeted usability. Square Enix changed Ten Chi Jin so it would no longer end upon movement, and adjusted Throwing Dagger as supplemental ranged damage. These details make flexibility a useful point of comparison, especially in encounters that require movement. They do not reduce the job to one damage number or remove the need to execute its actions in the right sequence. The official adjustment archive records these changes.

Samurai: assess it by patch, not by an old impression
Samurai’s current balance cannot be inferred from an old launch impression. In its Patch 7.5 guide, Square Enix said party damage buffs increased Samurai’s relative gain, while its overall damage output still lagged behind other DPS jobs; it made potency adjustments in response. That is a dated developer rationale, not a permanent verdict on Samurai’s strength or its standing in every duty. The official job guide surfaces the Patch 7.5 rationale.
Reaper: ideal output depends on the duty
Square Enix’s Patch 7.5 rationale for Reaper explicitly notes duty-dependent suitability and the difficulty of executing ideal rotations in high-end content. It chose modest potency increases ahead of an upcoming Ultimate rather than changes that would alter the rotation. That points to encounter fit and execution as relevant considerations; it does not mean Reaper is universally difficult or weak. The same job guide gives the stated rationale.

What to compare before choosing a melee job
| What matters in play | Why it changes the impression | What the official history establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Rotation feel and action density | A fast linked sequence can feel satisfying to one player and crowded to another. | Square Enix acknowledged launch feedback about Viper’s rotation busyness and later removed Noxious Gnash upkeep. Producer statement; adjustment archive. |
| Positioning and close-range uptime | Melee jobs fight near the target, so encounter movement and positioning shape how consistently you can carry out a rotation. | The official guide describes the melee role as close-range combat focused on combos and careful positioning. Job guide. |
| Burst execution and movement | How many actions must fit into a burst window, and whether movement interrupts a sequence, affect comfort under pressure. | Dragoon received fewer burst-phase actions; Ninja’s Ten Chi Jin was changed so movement would not end it. Adjustment archive. |
| Single-target versus multi-target situations | Performance and balance can shift when a duty asks you to attack several enemies rather than one. | Square Enix said Patch 7.25 adjustments followed a review during a multi-enemy Savage phase. The official archive records the change, but this does not establish a permanent cross-job AoE ranking. Adjustment archive. |
| Duty-specific execution | A rotation that is ideal on a stationary target may be harder to maintain amid a particular fight’s movement and mechanics. | Square Enix’s Patch 7.5 Reaper rationale identifies duty-dependent suitability and high-end execution difficulty. Job guide. |
Why patch-specific impressions matter
Dawntrail’s launch was followed by usability and balance revisions. Monk’s rotation was adjusted after feedback, while Dragoon and Ninja received changes affecting action flow and usability. The Viper upkeep change also altered the launch version’s timing demands. These histories help explain why two players can remember the same job differently if they played on different patches.
Balance notes should be read narrowly. Square Enix says the Patch 7.5 potency changes were intended to improve balance within roles, but the notes do not supply a universal job ranking or a common, current set of comparative statistics across duties. A ranking based on logs would need to identify its patch, encounter, sample or method, and whether it measures job damage, contribution, or representation.

How to choose among the six
- Choose based on the rotation’s pace and action density you enjoy, not on Viper’s launch-era reputation alone.
- Consider how comfortable you are staying close to a target and adapting to mechanics that interrupt uptime.
- If burst execution or movement flexibility matters most to you, compare those parts of Dragoon’s and Ninja’s documented adjustment histories with your own encounter experience.
- Judge balance using the current patch and the duties you actually play; a potency rationale for one patch is not a permanent ranking.
For exact current actions and traits, consult the official job guide and the current in-game tooltips, since the adjustment history alone is not a full level-100 rotation manual.
