What kind of game is Final Fantasy XVI?
Square Enix describes Final Fantasy XVI as “The first fully fledged Action RPG in the mainline Final Fantasy series.” It follows Clive Rosfield in a dark fantasy world shaped by Eikons and the Dominants who wield them. Combat centers on real-time swordplay, Eikonic abilities and large-scale clashes between Eikons. Square Enix’s official game description presents that action-led design as the game’s defining departure, not as a traditional turn-based Final Fantasy battle system.

What do the reviews say?
Metacritic listed an 87/100 Metascore from 146 critic reviews when accessed in 2026, classifying the reception as “Generally Favorable.” Its page also showed an 8.3 user score from 10,252 ratings at that time. As one individual outlet’s verdict, GameSpot awarded the game 9/10 and labeled its review “Superb” in its 2023 review listing. That score is GameSpot’s judgment, not another measurement of the Metacritic average. The reviews listed on Metacritic illustrate some disagreement: excerpts praise the action and cinematic battles, while a Digital Trends excerpt criticizes shallow RPG hooks and dated design. - You want combat that takes place in real time, with Clive using sword attacks and powers drawn from multiple Eikons.
- You are drawn to a dark fantasy story centered on Clive and a world whose fate is bound up with Eikons and their Dominants.
- You want large, cinematic encounters between Eikons as a major part of the experience.
Think carefully if…
- You primarily want turn-based battles; the official description presents this as a fully fledged action RPG.

Is the action approachable?
Square Enix offers Story-focused and Action-focused modes. It says Story-focused mode is recommended for players “who are less comfortable with action games and wish to focus more on the game’s story elements.” The publisher describes that mode as using some automatic evasion and simplified activation of Eikonic combos; Action-focused mode leaves each action under player control. Square Enix announced The Rising Tide as the final DLC chapter on 18 April 2024. Its announcement describes a new story, battles, sidequests, weapons, accessories, a level-cap increase, new Eikonic abilities, the region of Mysidia, Leviathan and the 20-stage Kairos Gate. If the appeal is a story-led action RPG with real-time abilities and cinematic Eikon encounters, the generally favorable critical reception gives you reason to consider it. If your priority is turn-based combat or a broad playable cast, its central design may not match what you want from Final Fantasy. Choose a platform and edition based on the content you want, and use full reviews to investigate the party and RPG-system details most important to your decision.
