To earn the Praxic Blade, complete the Fire and Ice Exotic mission: navigate the Ascendant Plane, balance Light and Darkness energy, defeat the Disciple of Harrow, and claim the sword from the vault. The mission is available to players who own and have progressed through the Renegades campaign.

How to unlock and launch Fire and Ice

You must own and have progressed through the Renegades campaign to access Fire and Ice, according to Bungie’s activity guide. Bungie’s Renegades progression guide places the mission and Praxic Blade in the campaign’s progression. When it is available to your character, look for the mission in Destinations or the Portal Ops tab in the Director.

Reach the Praxic Vault

  1. From the starting area, head toward the large spherical cannon beside the frozen sea. Enter the Imperium base through the open entrance in the ice wall.
  2. Defeat Val Cal’Ric, Door Technician, and pick up the Imperium Door Codes he drops. Use the codes at the console in the room.
  3. In the next area, activate the Darkness totem and defeat the Taken enemies, including the Portal Keeper Ogre. Enter the portal that appears and collect the Imbalanced Octant.

Cross the Ascendant Plane

The route includes narrow ledges, traps, angled walls with push blocks, and disappearing floors. Follow the visual cues, but do not assume every yellow-lit opening is the correct route. The step-by-step path below follows the route described in the Shacknews walkthrough; Dexerto’s guide also notes the pale directional lights and platforming hazards.

  1. In the room with a hollow pillar in the center and floating Taken orbs, climb to the opening, then drop through it toward the platforms below.
  2. Follow the yellow-lit route across the chasm, using the ledges and towers. Watch for angled walls and push blocks that can knock you off or funnel you into traps.
  3. At the second angled-wall section, take the narrow hallway on the right instead of the misleading yellow-lit opening.
  4. In the room with disappearing floors, take the farthest-right gateway, then the right gateway in the first center wall, the leftmost gateway, and finally the right-hand gateway.
  5. Continue along the upper route and follow the light cues through the second chasm. Activate the Darkness totem at the staircase to advance.

Balance the Light and Darkness fields

The first major combat puzzle depends on which factions your Centurion kills come from. Defeating two Centurions from the same faction—both Taken or both Imperium—creates Paired Energy. Defeating one Taken Centurion and one Imperium Centurion creates Opposite Energy.

  1. Defeat the appropriate Centurions to produce the energy type the fields need.
  2. Pick up the resulting throwable energy and throw it into its matching field. Distribute throws evenly between the Light and Darkness sides, repeating until the fields fill and form spheres.
  3. Use the other energy type to fill the remaining fields. Once both sets are complete, interact with the central structure to calibrate the Octant.
  4. Collect the Balanced Octant, then use the portal and Darkness totem to continue.

If the encounter says a Light or Darkness blight has lost balance, two Imbalanced Wardens appear. Defeat both to restart the encounter rotation, then resume filling the fields.

Defeat the Disciple of Harrow

The Disciple’s health is divided into four chunks. It relocates during the fight and summons reinforcements. When it becomes immune at its final health chunk, fill the two Darkness fields near the top of the arena with Opposite Energy; the encounter requires eight Opposite Energy for this step.

  1. Defeat a Centurion to generate the energy needed for the fields. Only one side of the arena has Centurions at a time.
  2. Jump across to the floating platforms and activate the Darkness totem. This switches the side where enemies appear, letting you generate more energy.
  3. Move promptly: the floating platforms disappear after a short time. Repeat the enemy-side switch and energy collection until both Darkness fields form spheres.
  4. With the fields filled, the Disciple’s immunity shield drops. Finish the boss.

After defeating the Disciple of Harrow, go to the center of the vault and claim the Praxic Blade. Bungie lists the sword as an unlock from Fire and Ice in its Renegades progression guide.
