Short answer: Your chosen house’s students join automatically. Other students become available to scout during monastery exploration from Chapter 2, provided Byleth meets that student’s skill and stat requirements—or has built enough support to reduce them. Faculty have separate chapter and Byleth-level gates, while route locks, the timeskip, and the Part I-only Ashen Wolves recruitment window make several characters permanently missable on a given run.
Spoiler warning: The route and timeskip sections reveal recruitment outcomes and Chapter 11–15 events.

How recruitment works
During a free monastery exploration from Chapter 2 onward, speak to a student from another house and choose the recruitment option. Each student checks two things on Byleth: one skill rank and one personal stat. For example, a student may require Bow C and Strength 20, or Authority B and Charm 25. The exact requirement belongs to the character, not to the house you selected.

Students in your starting house do not need to be scouted; they are already members of your class. Recruitment is therefore mainly about adding students from the other two houses, plus faculty, staff, DLC characters, and a small number of route-specific cases.

What the game checks
- Skill: The required Byleth rank can be D, C, B, or B+, depending on the student.
- Stat: The target is commonly 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 in the relevant Byleth stat.
- Support: Support with the student lowers both burdens. Triangle Attack’s reference data describes a 20% reduction to the stat target per support tier and stepwise reductions to the skill rank. At A support, the student can be recruited regardless of the skill or stat.
Look at Byleth’s underlying stat rather than a temporary class or ability bonus. Serenes Forest notes that class and ability bonuses do not count toward the recruitment check. If the required stat is Strength 20, use the permanent value shown for Byleth, not a value supplied only by an equipped effect.
The practical scouting loop
- Explore the monastery in Chapter 2 or later and speak to the student.
- Choose the recruitment prompt to see whether Byleth currently qualifies.
- If the requirement is not met, read the requested skill and stat, then plan instruction, activities, and support around those two values.
- Return on a later exploration day and try again. A failed or declined offer locks that attempt only for the current weekend; the option returns the following weekend.
Recruitment is not a one-time conversation that disappears forever after an ordinary failure. The important exceptions are route locks, Part I deadlines, and characters who leave or become enemies after the timeskip.
Student requirements and useful examples
The following examples are the no-support requirements documented by Triangle Attack. They illustrate how the two-part check works; support can lower or remove these requirements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Student | Byleth skill | Byleth stat | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bernadetta | Bow C | Strength 20 | Raise Bow while building Strength or support. |
| Dorothea | Authority B | Charm 25 | Authority and Charm are both checked without support. |
| Felix | Sword B+ | Speed 15 | The B+ sword requirement is the demanding part for an early scout. |
| Lysithea | Faith B | Magic 15 | Faith practice and Magic investment address the two checks. |
| Hilda | Axe C | Charm 30 | Her high Charm target makes support especially valuable. |
These are examples rather than a complete student table. When planning a recruit not listed here, use the requirement displayed in your current game and treat the chapter, route, and support state as part of the requirement. A guide table cannot override a route lock or a character’s availability window.
How support changes the calculation
Support is the most flexible way to recruit students whose skill or stat does not fit Byleth’s build. Each support tier lowers the skill rank in steps and reduces the stat target by 20% per tier in the documented system. The game’s displayed recruitment prompt is the final authority if a rounded value is unclear.

A support removes the normal skill and stat test entirely. Reaching A support is therefore a guaranteed route around a difficult requirement, although building A support can take longer than raising one skill rank.
Building support efficiently
Support points are earned through ordinary monastery activities rather than a single special quest. Use the options that are available in your current chapter and that the target character will accept.
- Meals: Invite the student to share a meal when the menu and activity points allow it.
- Gifts: Give liked gifts during exploration; a disliked gift wastes an opportunity.
- Lost items: Return the character’s lost items as soon as you identify them.
- Choir practice: Include the student when the activity is available.
- Mission assistance: Set the character as an adjutant or temporary mission assistant where the game permits it.
- Advice answers: Choose responses that increase the relevant support.
RPG Site cautions that the visible support letter can lag behind the hidden support points. If a character appears to be just short of the next rank, continue support-building instead of assuming the requirement cannot be met. A B-looking relationship may still be accumulating points toward the automatic recruitment check described below.
The B-support automatic offer
Serenes Forest reports that a student with B-or-higher support can make a recruitment request during a free weekday. This request ignores the normal skill and stat requirements, but the event is chance-based rather than guaranteed. Keep checking free weekdays after reaching B support.
There are two important limits. First, an automatic request does not bypass route locks. Second, Caspar and Ferdinand cannot use this method before Part 2 in a normal first run because their B supports are not available during Part I. For those two, plan to meet their ordinary requirements or wait for the later support availability rather than relying on a pre-timeskip B-support event.

Faculty and staff recruitment
Faculty do not use the student skill-plus-stat test. Their recruitment is tied to story progress and Byleth’s level, with support able to reduce the level threshold. Chapter gates remain in place even when support is high.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Character | Earliest chapter in the documented guide | Byleth level gate | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catherine | Chapter 4 | 15 | Route restrictions can prevent or alter recruitment. |
| Cyril | Chapter 5 | 10 | Route restrictions can prevent or alter recruitment. |
| Shamir | Chapter 6 | 15 | Check the chapter and level before speaking to her. |
| Hanneman | Chapter 8 | 15 | Support can reduce the level requirement, but not the chapter gate. |
| Manuela | Chapter 8 | 15 | Support can reduce the level requirement, but not the chapter gate. |
Because support can lower a faculty level threshold, a character who refuses at one level may become available after support-building. Do not interpret an early refusal as a permanent miss unless a route or story event has changed the character’s status.
Route locks and characters you cannot recruit everywhere
House leaders and their closest retainers are route-locked. No amount of Byleth skill, stat, or support can recruit them outside their designated route.
| Character | Recruitment restriction |
|---|---|
| Edelgard | Black Eagles only. |
| Hubert | Black Eagles only. |
| Dimitri | Blue Lions only. |
| Dedue | Blue Lions only. |
| Claude | Golden Deer only. |
Hilda is the unusual house-student case. Triangle Attack notes that she can join the Black Eagles only on the Silver Snow route, in Chapter 12, and support-building with her is restricted until that point. She is not a normal early Black Eagles scout.
Black Eagles route consequences
Flayn joins automatically in Chapter 7, but leaves if you choose Crimson Flower in Chapter 11. Catherine and Cyril cannot be recruited into Black Eagles on Crimson Flower; on Silver Snow they join automatically in Chapter 12. Shamir also joins Silver Snow automatically in Chapter 12. These are story outcomes, not checks that can be solved by raising a stat.

Timeskip recruitment and re-recruitment
Recruiting a student before the timeskip does not always mean that the character is permanently in your army. RPG Site reports that some pre-timeskip recruits can appear in the post-timeskip enemy army and must be defeated before they can return. Ashe and Lorenz are specifically identified in that guidance.
Ashe’s documented condition
Serenes Forest gives a precise case: Ashe leaves at Part 2 unless Edelgard or Dimitri is present. If he appears as an enemy in Chapter 15, defeat him and then use the resulting recruitment opportunity to bring him back. This is a battle-and-recruitment sequence, not a second monastery stat check.
For any character who is absent after the timeskip, inspect the chapter’s enemy roster and dialogue rather than assuming the recruit is gone forever. A character who must be defeated should be left alive until the game presents the post-battle recruitment choice; defeating the unit without the relevant event can remove the opportunity.

Their availability is separate from the normal student skill-and-stat table.

Anna
With the Expansion Pass, Anna becomes recruitable in the monastery after Chapter 3. She has no Support relationships, so the ordinary support reductions and automatic B-support offer do not apply to her. Recruiting her also unlocks a later paralogue.
Can you recruit everyone on one route?
No. A single playthrough cannot contain every playable recruit because the three house leaders and their locked retainers belong to their own routes. Route-specific staff outcomes further divide the roster, especially the Crimson Flower and Silver Snow branches of the Black Eagles.
You can, however, assemble a very broad roster by combining early student scouting, support planning, faculty recruitment, DLC timing, and post-timeskip re-recruitment. The most reliable plan is to decide your route before investing heavily in a character who may be unavailable there.
Route-planning checklist
- Choose the route first: Mark the leader and retainer characters you cannot obtain elsewhere.
- Scout ordinary students in Part I: Start in Chapter 2 and use support to lower difficult requirements.
- Track faculty chapter gates: Catherine, Cyril, Shamir, Hanneman, and Manuela each have a documented earliest chapter and level threshold.
- Resolve Black Eagles choices: Decide whether you are pursuing Crimson Flower or Silver Snow before Chapter 11, because Flayn, Catherine, Cyril, and Shamir have different outcomes.
- Finish Ashen Wolves recruitment: Complete the listed Cindered Shadows chapters and recruit all four from Abyss during Part I.
- Prepare for Part 2: If a pre-timeskip recruit is absent, check whether the character must be defeated and recruited from an enemy army.
What to do when a recruit will not join
The requirement still appears after raising the stat
Verify that you raised Byleth’s permanent stat, not a temporary class or ability bonus. Then confirm the correct skill—for example, Bow rather than a different weapon rank—and check that the character is not route-locked or waiting for a later chapter.
The character rejected the conversation
A failed or declined student offer normally locks the attempt only until the following weekend. Spend the intervening days on support or instruction and try again after the weekend reset.
The support letter looks high, but recruitment has not triggered
Continue building support. Hidden support points can be ahead of the visible letter, and a B-support automatic request is chance-based. Use meals, gifts, lost items, choir, mission assistance, and advice answers rather than waiting passively.
A faculty member is unavailable
Check both conditions: the documented earliest chapter and Byleth’s level. Support may reduce the level threshold, but it cannot make a character appear before the chapter gate. Finally, confirm that your route does not force that character to leave or refuse.
An Ashen Wolf cannot be found
Confirm that the corresponding Cindered Shadows chapter has been completed and that you are still in Part I. The official support guidance makes the Part I limit decisive.
Quick Recap
Best way to use this guide during a playthrough
- At the start of each exploration, choose one or two future recruits and record their displayed skill and stat requirements.
- Use instruction and activities to target the hardest requirement rather than spreading points randomly.
- Build support whenever a requirement would require an unnatural Byleth build, especially for high stat targets such as Hilda’s Charm 30 example.
- Recheck recruitment after each weekend, because a failed attempt does not permanently remove an ordinary student.
- Before Chapter 11, confirm your route decision and finish every Part I-only recruitment, including the Ashen Wolves.
- After the timeskip, inspect enemy armies for characters who need to be defeated and recruited again, with Ashe as the clearest documented example.
