Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAn active firewall with an empty iptables -L listing is not necessarily a failure. On current Linux systems, policy may be enforced by nftables, managed through firewalld or ufw, stored in a different address family, or attached by another program. Start with the kernel’s authoritative view: sudo nft list ruleset. Then identify the manager that owns those rules and inspect its runtime, permanent, zone, and interface settings.

What an empty iptables listing actually means
iptables -L displays a particular compatibility interface. It does not guarantee that you are viewing every packet-filtering rule loaded into the kernel. A host can have an active firewall service while that command shows only built-in chains, no rules, or an incomplete policy.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The apparent mismatch usually falls into one or more of these categories:
- nftables is enforcing the policy. Many modern distributions run firewalld primitives through nftables. A legacy or compatibility iptables command can therefore omit the rules that are actually processing packets.
- A frontend owns the configuration. firewalld expresses policy as zones and services, while ufw provides a simpler interface over iptables and nftables. Their status output and the kernel ruleset answer different questions.
- You are looking at the wrong state. firewalld maintains separate runtime and permanent configurations. A rule added only at runtime can disappear after a reload or restart; a permanent change may not be active until a reload.
- The other address family has the rule. IPv4 and IPv6 are separate inspection paths. An empty IPv4 view says nothing about an IPv6 policy.
- Another program installed hooks. Containers, virtualization software, and other networking tools can add chains or tables outside the view you expected.
Consequently, “iptables is empty” is an observation about one interface, not a verdict that the machine is unprotected.

Use this safe verification order
Collect evidence before changing anything. This order works on a local machine and is especially important on a remote server, where flushing rules can terminate your own connection.
- Check which firewall services are active. Run the service checks that exist on the host:
systemctl is-active firewalld
systemctl is-active ufw
systemctl is-active nftables
A result of active identifies a running service, but it does not by itself show which tables, chains, interfaces, or policies are loaded.
- Read the kernel’s nftables ruleset. Use root privileges so the inspection is complete:
sudo nft list ruleset
This is the first authoritative check when an iptables listing appears empty. It can reveal tables, base chains, hook priorities, match conditions, verdicts, and counters that a compatibility view does not display.
- Inspect legacy and compatibility views for both families.
sudo iptables -S
sudo ip6tables -S
These commands show IPv4 and IPv6 rules in a concise chain-and-rule format. Empty output can be expected when the active backend is nftables, but the result is still useful when diagnosing direct or legacy rules.
- Inspect the owning frontend. For firewalld, obtain its state and active zones. For ufw, obtain its verbose status. The relevant commands are shown in the following sections.
- Save the evidence before testing. Keep the nftables output, both iptables outputs, service status, and firewalld or ufw output together. If the host is remote, test from a separate system rather than experimenting by flushing or stopping the firewall over your only session.
Identify the manager and backend
Check firewalld
Run:
sudo firewall-cmd --state
When the daemon is running, the utility prints running and returns a status code indicating that state. A running firewalld service means you should inspect zones and policies, not rely on iptables -L alone.

Check ufw
On Ubuntu systems where ufw is installed, run:
sudo ufw status verbose
Ubuntu Security Documentation describes ufw as “a firewall framework that acts as a frontend for both iptables and nftables.” Its status is therefore a management-layer view. Compare it with sudo nft list ruleset to see what the kernel has actually loaded.
Check nftables as a service
If nftables is active, the host may be loading a ruleset directly rather than through firewalld or ufw. The service check tells you that a loader is running; sudo nft list ruleset tells you which rules are currently present. Do not assume that an enabled service and a non-empty ruleset are interchangeable: a service can be active while a configuration is empty, failed to load, or replaced by another manager.
Read the kernel ruleset with nft
The command to start with is:
sudo nft list ruleset
Read the output from the outside in:
- Tables identify an address family or a family-independent table containing the policy objects.
- Chains group rules. Base chains attach to packet-processing hooks; regular chains are reached from other chains.
- Rules contain matches such as source address, destination port, protocol, interface, or connection state, followed by a verdict such as accept, drop, reject, or jump.
- Counters show whether packets and bytes have matched a rule since its counters were last reset. A zero counter can mean that traffic has not reached that rule; it does not automatically prove the rule is ineffective.
Pay attention to the family and hook shown for each table or chain. A rule in an IPv6 chain will not appear in iptables -S, and a rule at another hook can still process a packet after an earlier layer accepts it. When several programs are installed, the complete output may contain chains with names associated with firewalld, container networking, virtualization, or locally written policy.
Do not edit or flush the ruleset merely to make the output look familiar. First preserve the complete listing and identify which service is responsible for loading it.
Inspect firewalld’s zones and state
Find active zones and interfaces
sudo firewall-cmd --get-active-zones
This shows which zones are active and which interfaces or source bindings are assigned to them. The same service can therefore allow traffic on one interface while applying a different policy to another. If an interface is missing from the active-zone output, inspect its network assignment before concluding that the firewall ignored a rule.

List each active zone
For every zone returned above, run:
sudo firewall-cmd --zone=<zone> --list-all
Replace <zone> with the actual zone name. The result lists the zone’s interfaces, sources, services, ports, protocols, forwarding behavior, masquerading, rich rules, and other settings exposed by firewalld. Run the command for each active zone; inspecting only a default zone can miss the policy applied to the interface carrying your traffic.
Understand runtime and permanent configurations
Firewalld separates the configuration currently loaded into the daemon from the configuration intended to survive a reload or restart. A runtime-only change can work immediately and then disappear. A permanent change can exist on disk without affecting packets until the configuration is reloaded.
Use a runtime-to-permanent operation only when you have deliberately verified the runtime policy and want to save it:
sudo firewall-cmd --runtime-to-permanent
Do not run that command as a diagnostic shortcut. It changes the persistent configuration. Conversely, reloading firewalld while troubleshooting can replace runtime-only rules with the permanent state, which may make a working connection fail.

Account for direct rules and the nftables backend
Firewalld supports direct rules and multiple protocol families, including IPv4, IPv6, Ethernet bridges, and IP sets. Its documentation warns that an nftables-backed configuration can involve multiple hooks. An iptables direct rule that accepts a packet does not necessarily end processing if another nftables hook still evaluates that packet. Therefore, inspect both firewalld’s zone output and the complete nftables ruleset when an apparent allow or deny has no effect.

Reconcile ufw with nftables
Start with:
sudo ufw status verbose
Ufw’s output is useful for understanding the policy the administrator intended: default incoming and outgoing behavior, numbered rules, logging, and application profiles. It is not a replacement for the kernel view. Follow it with:
sudo nft list ruleset
Look for the chains and verdicts that correspond to the ufw policy. If ufw reports an allow rule but the packet is still blocked, check the interface, address family, direction, and ordering in nftables. If nftables shows no corresponding objects, verify that ufw is enabled and that another manager has not replaced or superseded its configuration.
Do not operate firewalld and ufw as competing owners of the same host unless you have a specific design for doing so. Two managers can create policies at different hooks, making a rule from one layer appear to contradict the status of another.
Why iptables -L can be empty on a protected host
| Inspection method | What it represents | What it can miss | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
sudo nft list ruleset |
The nftables rules currently loaded in the kernel, including tables, chains, hooks, rules, and counters. | Management intent such as a firewalld zone name or ufw application profile. | Authoritative packet-enforcement check on an nftables system. |
sudo iptables -S |
IPv4 rules exposed through the iptables interface in use on that host. | Rules that exist only in nftables, IPv6 policy, and hooks outside this interface. | Checking legacy or direct IPv4 rules and compatibility behavior. |
sudo ip6tables -S |
IPv6 rules exposed through the ip6tables interface. | IPv4 policy and nftables objects not represented by this interface. | Verifying that IPv6 is not following a different policy. |
firewall-cmd --get-active-zones |
Firewalld’s active zone-to-interface and source bindings. | Raw hook order, rules installed by unrelated software, and inactive or unbound zones. | Determining which firewalld policy applies to a connection. |
firewall-cmd --zone=<zone> --list-all |
The services, ports, interfaces, sources, and other settings exposed for one firewalld zone. | Rules in another zone, direct rules, and the distinction between runtime and permanent state unless you inspect both deliberately. | Explaining firewalld’s intended policy for a specific zone. |
ufw status verbose |
Ufw’s frontend policy and defaults. | Exact nftables hook placement and rules added by other software. | Reconciling Ubuntu’s ufw configuration with the kernel ruleset. |
Common situations and the correct next check
Firewalld is active, but both iptables commands are empty
Run sudo nft list ruleset, then sudo firewall-cmd --get-active-zones and sudo firewall-cmd --zone=<zone> --list-all for each active zone. If nftables contains the chains and verdicts, the empty compatibility view is expected. If the nftables ruleset is also empty, investigate whether firewalld loaded the intended configuration, whether the relevant interface is assigned to an active zone, and whether another service replaced the rules.
Ufw reports active, but an iptables listing is blank
Use sudo ufw status verbose and compare it with sudo nft list ruleset. Ufw may be using nftables rather than the legacy iptables path. Confirm the address family and interface involved in the test, then check for other hooks that could override the apparent allow.

A rule works until a reload or reboot
This points to a runtime-versus-permanent mismatch in firewalld. Capture the current zone output, determine whether the rule was added to runtime or permanent configuration, and reload only after deciding which state should win. Use sudo firewall-cmd --runtime-to-permanent only after validating that the runtime rules are the ones you intend to keep.
An ACCEPT rule exists, but traffic is still blocked
Inspect the full nftables ruleset for another chain or hook. Firewalld’s direct-rule behavior allows an nftables-backed configuration to continue processing a packet in another layer. Also check whether the rule applies to the correct interface, protocol, port, source address, and address family. A matching IPv4 rule cannot permit an IPv6 connection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Only container or virtual-machine traffic behaves differently
Container and virtualization software can install independent chains and hooks. Include those objects in the complete nftables listing and identify the bridge or virtual interface carrying the packet. Then compare the policy on the host interface with the policy on the bridge or virtual network rather than inspecting only the physical interface’s zone.
IPv4 works but IPv6 does not, or the reverse
Run both sudo iptables -S and sudo ip6tables -S, then inspect nftables for family-specific tables and chains. Check firewalld’s zone output as well, because its support for IPv4 and IPv6 does not imply identical effective rules. Test each address family separately from a system that can reach both.
A practical evidence bundle
For a support ticket or your own change record, collect the following outputs without modifying the firewall:
systemctl is-active firewalld
systemctl is-active ufw
systemctl is-active nftables
sudo nft list ruleset
sudo iptables -S
sudo ip6tables -S
sudo firewall-cmd --state
sudo firewall-cmd --get-active-zones
sudo firewall-cmd --list-all
sudo ufw status verbose
Some commands will fail or be unavailable on systems that do not install the corresponding manager; record that fact rather than treating it as proof that no firewall exists. For firewalld, add sudo firewall-cmd --zone=<zone> --list-all for every zone shown as active. Keep timestamps and the interface being tested with the bundle so a later reload can be distinguished from the original state.
Remote-host safety rules
- Do not flush rules while connected remotely. A flush can remove the rule that permits your SSH or management session and can leave the host unreachable.
- Do not stop a firewall service as a first diagnostic step. Stopping it changes the condition you are trying to understand and can expose services unexpectedly.
- Capture before changing. Save
nft list ruleset, both iptables saves or listings available to you, and the frontend output before reloading or converting runtime configuration. - Test from a separate system. A second host lets you verify the intended port, protocol, and address family without relying on an already-established connection.
- Plan a recovery path. Use console or out-of-band access when available, and schedule permanent changes only when you can restore the prior configuration.
Decision checklist
- Is a firewall manager active, and which one?
- Does
sudo nft list rulesetcontain base chains or rules thatiptables -Lcannot show? - Which address family carries the failing connection: IPv4 or IPv6?
- Which firewalld zone is bound to the relevant interface or source?
- Are you viewing runtime state, permanent state, or both?
- Could a direct rule, container bridge, virtualization layer, or another program add a separate hook?
- Have you saved the current evidence and arranged a safe recovery route before making changes?
If you answer those questions in order, an empty iptables listing becomes a useful clue rather than a misleading conclusion. The kernel ruleset establishes what can process packets; the frontend commands explain why that policy was created and which interface, zone, or profile is supposed to use it.
