What Fishing Inc confirms about upgrades
Fishing Inc is a digital Steam game developed and published by BigBonk Studio, listed with a 14 April 2026 release date. Its official description presents a straightforward progression loop:

- Spend that cash on skills, gear and other upgrades.
- Travel to different locations.
- Fill the Fish Log by catching the species in each area.
- Use better upgrades to pursue larger and more exotic fish.

It also says, “Travel to many of the locations and catch all the fish in the areas!” That establishes that gear, money, location access and collection progress are connected. It does not establish the order in which particular rods, boats or equipment should be purchased.
Why a precise first-purchase list would be misleading
The public Steam store material does not provide an inventory of rods, boats or equipment. It gives no item names, prices, level requirements, catch bonuses, species requirements, location gates or operating costs. Without those values, naming a particular rod as the best opening purchase would be speculation.
The Steam Community page available for the game is a guide index. The checked page exposes a 100% achievement guide, but not an authoritative upgrade table. A guide, video or forum post that lists item names can be useful as a lead, but treat it as unverified until its claims can be matched against reproducible in-game evidence or developer documentation.

This distinction matters because an upgrade can be “better” in several incompatible ways. A rod might raise the value of every catch, a boat might unlock a new location without improving the old one, and another equipment item might only reduce effort or increase consistency. Calling one of them universally best without knowing its cost and effect can make a player spend cash more slowly rather than faster.
The spending rule that works without guessing item names
Use a simple economic test whenever the shop presents a purchase. Prefer an upgrade that either increases cash earned per trip or opens a location whose catches can repay the purchase quickly. Defer an item that only saves clicks, changes presentation or helps with species you cannot yet reach.

Payback trips = purchase cost ÷ additional cash earned per trip.
Use the same fishing route and a similar amount of play time for both observations. If an item costs 1,000 cash and raises your average profit by 100 cash per comparable trip, its simple payback is about 10 trips. If you cannot observe an income change, do not pretend that it has one; classify it as an access, consistency or convenience purchase instead.
When a purchase unlocks a new location, calculate payback using the extra cash from that location, not the total value of a single lucky catch. A location that produces one valuable species but has a poor average catch may be less efficient than a modest upgrade that improves every trip in your current area.
A practical early-game order
The order below is a decision sequence, not a list of fictional item names. Apply it to the actual labels and numbers shown in your game.
1. Keep a cash buffer before buying anything
Do not spend your entire balance the moment you return from a trip. Keep enough cash to test the next available location, skill or upgrade and to recover if the new option is less profitable than expected. The store description confirms that money is earned on fishing trips and then spent on upgrades; it does not state whether the game has refunds or resale, so assume purchases are difficult to reverse until the interface proves otherwise.

2. Buy a direct earning upgrade first
If the shop shows a rod or equipment item that clearly increases catch value, catch rate or another repeatable source of income, make it the leading candidate for your first purchase. The key word is repeatable: a benefit that applies to most trips is easier to recover than a benefit that only works in a narrow situation.
- Prefer the lower-cost option when two upgrades produce similar observed income.
- Prefer the option with the shorter payback when one is more expensive.
- Do not assume a higher displayed tier is better value until you compare its price with its practical increase.
3. Take a location unlock when it is the real progression gate
A boat or other access-related purchase should move ahead of a small earning upgrade when it opens a location containing fish that materially improve your average income or advance a Fish Log objective you need for progression. Confirm that the new area is actually usable with your current skills and equipment; an unlocked destination that produces unreliable catches may be an expensive detour.
Because the public listing does not state boat prices or location requirements, there is no supported universal rule such as “buy the first boat before the second rod.” Let the displayed gate and your measured income decide.

The official listing explicitly includes skills in the progression system. If a skill improves the catches you are already making, compare its price and effect with the next gear purchase. A cheap skill that raises income across your current route can have a shorter payback than a costly item that only matters in a later location.
Conversely, a skill tied to an inaccessible species or destination should wait unless it is required to unlock that destination. Do not buy a future-facing skill with your entire working balance.
5. Add consistency and convenience after income is stable
Once your regular route pays for purchases comfortably, buy equipment that reduces failed attempts, shortens downtime or makes collection goals easier. These upgrades can be worthwhile, but they should not be evaluated as though they increase cash unless the game shows a direct effect on earnings.

How to evaluate each upgrade category

- Read the complete tooltip. Note whether the item changes income, catch size, catch reliability, location access, species access or only convenience.
- Write down the price and your current cash. This prevents a high-tier label from hiding a poor cost-to-benefit ratio.
- Check prerequisites. Look for a required skill, location, Fish Log entry or earlier item.
- Run a baseline. Complete enough comparable trips to estimate your ordinary cash per trip, not your best result.
- Purchase only if the outcome is clear. If the effect is not measurable, keep the cash for a purchase with a known purpose.
- Re-test the same route. Compare average results after the upgrade and update your notes.
This process is especially important in an incremental game, where a small improvement applied repeatedly can beat a dramatic-looking upgrade with a long recovery period.
How to build your own upgrade ledger
A simple note on paper or in a spreadsheet is enough. Use one row per shop item and record:
- Exact in-game name.
- Purchase price.
- Required skill, location or Fish Log condition.
- Stated effect in the item description.
- Before-upgrade average cash per trip.
- After-upgrade average cash per trip.
- Whether the item changes access, consistency or convenience rather than income.
- Estimated payback trips.
For a location unlock, add the destination, the species you can actually catch there and the average cash from several ordinary trips. For a rod or equipment upgrade, keep the destination constant during the comparison. Changing both gear and location at once makes it impossible to tell which purchase created the improvement.

Buying by tier name alone
“Advanced,” “rare” or a similar label describes position in a shop, not necessarily value for your current stage. A cheaper item that improves every trip can outperform an expensive item designed for later content.

Confusing access with profit
A boat that opens a destination is strategically important, but access is not the same as immediate income. Check whether your current skills and rod can fish the new area consistently before committing the balance you use to fund normal trips.

Chasing exotic fish before establishing a route
The official description encourages larger and more exotic fish, but it does not say that the rarest fish provide the fastest return on investment. Build a dependable cash route first, then pursue collection or rarity goals with money you can afford to leave invested.
Testing too few trips
One unusually valuable catch can make a weak upgrade look excellent. Compare several ordinary trips before and after a purchase and use averages. If the game’s results vary widely, record a range as well as the average.
Spending before checking requirements
Some progression systems reveal a purchase but require another skill, location or Fish Log entry. Read the requirement first so that cash is not stranded in an upgrade you cannot use.

What would make a definitive item guide possible
A trustworthy rod, boat and equipment order needs more than the broad store description. For every item, a reliable guide would need:
- The exact in-game name and purchase price.
- Its numerical effect or a reproducible description of what changes.
- Required skills, locations or Fish Log progress.
- Which fish and locations are available before and after purchase.
- Evidence from repeatable in-game tests, developer documentation or game data that can be independently checked.
Until those details are published, treat a specific shopping list as a player report rather than an authoritative order. Screenshots can confirm a shop label and price at one point in progression, but they do not by themselves prove the best economic sequence for every save.
Steam listing context
At the time represented by the checked Steam page crawl, Fishing Inc showed 91% positive from 1,836 all-time user reviews and 90% positive from 114 reviews in the previous 30 days. These figures are snapshots and can change as new reviews arrive; they are not evidence that a particular rod, boat or equipment item is the best purchase.
Bottom line for your first purchase
Start by identifying the cheapest upgrade with a clear, repeatable effect on the catches you already make. Choose a boat or other access purchase first only when its newly opened location is both usable with your current setup and likely to repay the cost. Buy skills when they improve that same profitable activity or are the least-cost gate to it. Leave convenience and narrow, late-game benefits until your regular income can absorb them.
That is the most defensible early-game order available from the current public information. The official listing confirms the progression concept, but it does not support naming a particular rod, boat or equipment item as the universal first buy.
